Imran Khan, sister summoned in land corruption scandal

Lahore: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) of Pakistan’s Punjab has summoned the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, his sister Uzma Khan and her husband Ahad Majeed in the Layyah land corruption case, media reported.

According to a notification issued by the spokesperson, the PTI chief has been asked to appear before the ACE headquarters on June 19 whereas Uzma and her husband have been asked to present themselves before the ACE Director General.

Earlier, Imran was summoned by the ACE on June 16 but he did not appear before it. The summon was affixed at Imran’s Lahore Zaman Park residence.

The spokesperson maintained that the ACE had “clear evidence” of Imran’s involvement in the Layyah corruption scandal, adding that pressure was exerted on revenue officials from Bani Gala - Imran’s residence in Islamabad — for illegal transfer of land, Express Tribune reported.

Uzma is accused of alleged fraud in purchase of 5,261-kanal of land in Layyah district, reportedly worth billions of rupees, for a mere Rs 130 million. The ACE said that an FIR had been registered against the couple.

According to the spokesperson, the land was bought in 2021-22 through fraud, adding that Uzma and Majeed made a fake transfer of the land on their names.

He said the marker value of the land was about Rs six billion. The purchase, he added, was made when the ADB announced aid for the Greater Thal Canal project, which aimed at irrigating the barren lands through Thal canal.

The spokesperson said Uzma had prior knowledge of the project, so the couple forced the landowner to sell it to them. He added that the land owners had filed complaints against Uzma and others to the police for forcibly buying the land, Express Tribune reported.

“The EWG meetings have helped share some of the best practices from across the globe in the areas of tech-enabled learning, skilling and strengthening research, and promoting innovation. The present Working Group Meeting is an opportune moment to organise various events to create more awareness on India’s G20 presidency as well as renew our resolve towards universal attainment of FLN skills,” Devi said at the conference ‘Teaching-Learning Approaches and Pedagogy for FLN.

Devi inaugurated the multimedia exhibition showcasing best practices in education, FLN, digital initiatives, research, and skill development.

Houses of BJP leaders, party offices come under mob attack in Manipur

GUWAHATI: In strife-torn Manipur, leaders of ruling BJP and its offices are increasingly becoming the targets of frenzied mobs.

Throughout Friday evening and night, mobs made multiple attempts to target the houses of lawmakers and BJP offices in the Imphal Valley.

A BJP mandal office in Thongju was vandalised by a mob but another attempt to target the party office at Sinjemai was thwarted by security forces. The alert forces also foiled attempts from mobs to target the houses of minister Thongam Biswajit and BJP state president A Sharda Devi.

In other incidents, gunfire was reported from Kwakta in Bishnupur district and Kangvai in Churachandpur district throughout Friday night. A mob raided the Iringbam police station in Imphal West district to loot weapons but did not find any. The crowd was later dispersed by the Rapid Action Force.

Earlier, mobs attacked the houses of three lawmakers.

On May 25, the house of minister Konthoujam Govindas was vandalised. This was followed by the burning down of the official residence of minister Nemcha Kipgen last Wednesday. Then on Thursday night, the private residence of Union Minister of State for External Affairs RK Ranjan Singh was torched.

After a series of untoward incidents in Imphal, Army, Assam Rifles and Manipur Rapid Action Force intensified joint patrolling and area domination activities. The forces prevented rioters from congregating till late Friday night. They fought a pitched battle with a mob after the latter had torched a warehouse owned by a retired senior police official. Two civilians were injured.

Curfew is in force in several districts but mobs are congregating almost every day in Meitei-majority Imphal Valley to target the properties of lawmakers. Locals said people are venting their ire out on the streets as the government failed to check rising inflation, restore normalcy and take actions against militants involved in the violence.

Some MLAs, mostly from BJP, are camping in New Delhi to seek an appointment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. One of them, Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, said they would request Modi to take all steps for restoring peace in Manipur.

Meanwhile, the Twitter account of Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) says “@ITLFMediaCell’s account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand.”

  • 40 suffering from heat wave die at Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district hospital in three days

40 suffering from heat wave die at Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district hospital in three days

LUCKNOW: Two teams of the health department were rushed to Ballia on Saturday after 40 patients, who had been admitted to the district hospital due to heat stroke-related complications, died over the past three days.

As per reports, though the deceased were from varied localities, a high number of deaths sent the health department into a tizzy. Reportedly, 23 patients died on Thursday, 11 on Friday and another six on Saturday.

The health department has rushed a team under additional director (health) Azamgarh Division Dr OP Tewari, which is camping in Ballia to assess the situation. Director General (health) Renu Srivastava has rushed a separate team from Lucknow to conduct a probe into the high number of casualties.

Doctors at Ballia district hospital said that most of those who died over the past three days were over 60 years of age and had co-morbid conditions. The average temperature in Ballia, too, has been hovering between 40 and 44 degrees which is several notches above normal.

But what is perturbing for the health officials is that with similar conditions, no neighbouring district like Azamgarh, Mau and Ghazipur, has reported high numbers of heat wave-related deaths.

Meanwhile, the state government transferred Ballia district hospital’s chief medical superintendent Dr Diwakar Singh to Azamgarh.

  • Thanks to teamwork, Gujarat saw not a single casualty during Cyclone Biparjoy: Amit Shah

Thanks to teamwork, Gujarat saw not a single casualty during Cyclone Biparjoy: Amit Shah

AHMEDABAD: Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Saturday conducted an aerial survey of areas badly affected due to cyclone Biparjoy in Gujarat’s Kutch.

After completing an aerial observation and visiting many affected areas and hospitals, Shah addressed a press conference in Bhuj on Saturday.

“Cyclone Biparjoy demonstrated how the central government and the Gujarat government collaborated to make the best use of timely information. Only because the Gujarat government followed the guidelines announced by the NDMA did not a single person die, only 47 people were injured and 234 animals were lost. It is a credit to the Centre and the Gujarat government that no one was killed in the violent storm,” he said.

Talking about power supply, Shah said, “Many people said that there is no electricity in the villages. However, they are unaware that due to NDMA protocol, 3400 villages have been disconnected from HT line power supply. Electricity has been restored in 1600 villages and officials have promised me that it will be restored in practically all villages by the evening of the 20th.”

“1133 teams are working to restore power. Another 400 teams will be added tomorrow and around 7600 local employees are trying to restore power supply,” he added.

Shah also praised the Gujarat government for taking care of pregnant women during the cyclone. “1206 pregnant sisters were transported to the hospital during the cyclone, one child was born on the same day the cyclone hit and 707 births occurred in three days. I met mothers who gave birth to children and every woman was satisfied with the government’s service,” he said.

Giving information about evacuations, Shah said, “1,08,208 people had been transferred to safer areas, while 73,000 cattle had been relocated. 3,27,890 trees were modified to cause less harm during the storm. This time, 4,317 hoardings were removed before the storm. Over 1,00,000 fishermen had been recalled, along with 21,585 vessels that were at sea prior to the storm. Where mobile towers were damaged, DG sets were placed, and communication systems were nearly totally restored.”

He said PM Modi also monitored the situation continually. “Prime Minister Modi alerted the management system as soon as he learned of the storm and he personally supervised the management system’s functioning until one o’clock at night, giving required directions,” he said.

However, cyclone Biparjoy’s after-effects still linger in Gujarat. As high-speed winds pounded Surat during the previous two days, a man was killed when a roof fell on him and a pedestrian was hurt when an empty water tank fell on him.

According to the Marine Salt Manufacturers’ Association, significant rainfall has washed away tonnes of salt in Maliya in Morbi, Navlakhi in Kutch and many other places.

As a result of the storm, rain has been pouring down in North Gujarat’s Patan, Palanpur, Sabarkantha, Aravalli and Mehsana since Thursday night. Numerous trees have fallen in certain areas. The Banaskantha district talukas of Palanpur, Disa, Tharad, Vav, Deodar and Suigam are experiencing rain. Low-lying places are consequently flooded. As a result of today’s intense rainfall in Patan, rainwater has now gotten to Gujarat’s largest solar project in Charanka. Water blocked the Ahmedabad-Delhi National Highway as it traveled through Palanpur, which caused problems for automobiles.
