Two superfast railway lines to connect Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

HYDERABAD: In welcome news for the railway passengers of the Telugu states, the Union government has approved the construction of two new superfast railway lines connecting Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Railway authorities have been instructed to conduct the necessary surveys to enhance connectivity between these regions.

One of the proposed superfast railway lines will run between Shamshabad (Umdanagar Railway Station) and Visakhapatnam via Vijayawada. This line will prove highly beneficial as it will offer direct connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad for passengers travelling from different parts of Andhra Pradesh heading to the Middle East. This will be the first time that Umdanagar will have a direct superfast railway line.

The other new railway line will connect Visakhapatnam and Kurnool via Kacheguda. There has been a significant demand for the introduction of more trains towards Mahbubnagar and Kurnool. The Railway Board has granted approval for the necessary survey to strengthen connectivity between the two States with the construction of these two new superfast railway lines.

The Railway Board has communicated to the South Central Railway zone instructing them to conduct surveys for the first railway line between Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada in AP as well as between Shamshabad and Visakhapatnam.

A survey will also be carried out for the second railway line. The technical feasibility required for the implementation of the superfast railway project along these routes will be determined through these surveys. Once the surveys are completed, the project will move forward.

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has held multiple meetings with Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and submitted letters highlighting the benefits that these superfast railway lines will bring to the Telugu states.

Taking this into consideration, the Railway Board has recently decided to conduct surveys for the superfast railway lines on these two routes.”The technical feasibility required to undertake the super-fast railway project on these routes will be determined through the survey. The survey will be completed in six months after which the project will be taken forward. Together, these two railway lines will account for a length of 942 km route (to travel at a maximum speed of 220 kmph),” according to a release by Minister Kishan’s office.

No merger with any party, will fight polls alone, says Sharmila

HYDERABAD: While dismissing the rumours of YSRTP merging with BRS or Congress, the party’s president YS Sharmila on Thursday predicted that the ruling BRS will not win more than 30 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections, Speaking to the media after paying tributes to Telangana Martyrs at the Martyrs Memorial in Gun Park on Thursday, she recalled how 14 Congress MLAs joined the BRS after 2018 elections and asked: “what is the guarantee that Congress won’t continue to be a supplying company for BRS.”

“Both BJP and Congress have been acting as stooges of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. YSRTP is the only party that has been fighting for the cause of the people,” she added.“I have not completed 3,850 km padayatra to merge YSRTP with Congress. If I really want to join any party, there will be no objection from anyone. Even if I want to join hands with KCR will he say no? It is not proper to talk about merger of my party, after all the hard work I have done. It is nothing but insulting a woman,” she said.

Stating that the YSRTP will fight the elections alone, Sharmila said that the party was identifying candidates to contest from all Assembly constituencies, and that the talk of an alliance would only come at a later stage. She said that only if all the parties gave an assurance that they were solidly against the chief minister, she would consider any form of an alliance.Sharmila also asked the CM to respond to 10 questions she posed before starting the decennial Telangana Formation Day celebrations.

“How many jobs were filled in 10 years? What was your family’s wealth before and after these 10 years? What happened to the promise of making a Dalit the chief minister? Is it not true that your government has sold 30,000 acres during this decade? What happened to KG to PG free education? If farmers have become millionaires as you claim, then why have 9,000 farmers died by suicide under your rule? You had promised to irrigate one crore acres. How many have you irrigated? What is the condition of the families of Telangana martyrs,” she asked.

Demolition drive against ‘illegal’ commercial complex triggers protests in J&K’s Kathua

    By PTI
    KATHUA/ JAMMU:
Authorities attempted to carry out a demolition drive and partially damaged an “illegal” commercial complex in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district on Friday, prompting traders to stage a protest against the administration.

The owners of the building alleged that the demolition drive was carried out without issuing any notice to them.

They added that they have filed a plea in the high court and the hearing is scheduled for Friday.

Amid a heavy deployment of police personnel, men and machines of the Kathua Municipal Council, led by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Santosh Kotwal, attempted to carry out the demolition drive at the complex located on the Shaheedi Chowk road, sources said.

The owner of the building, Mohinder Mahajan, reached the spot and raised objections to the government’s action. He asked the CEO to show the demolition notice.

The CEO failed to produce it, resulting in anger among the traders’ community and triggering protests, the sources said.

Authorities alleged that the owners of the building had bribed officials to raise the structure illegally, resulting in heated arguments between the owners and officials.

Police had to intervene to avert a clash between the two sides. The Beopar Mandal Kathua has voiced concern over the development.

Members of the organisation staged a protest against Kathua Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Minhas and raised anti-BJP slogans.

The administration’s move came only a few days after the owners of the building converted the residential complex into a commercial one.

The municipal council had served a notice to the building owners. The matter was under the deputy commissioner’s consideration.

“We have filed an application in the high court. The hearing is scheduled for Friday itself. It is unfortunate that they damaged the structure without issuing any notice,” one of the owners told reporters.

The protesters have sat on a dharna, blocking a highway in the district. Police are requesting them to disperse to ensure a smooth flow of traffic.

Decision on Hijab ban to be in students’ favour, says education minister

A day after academicians met Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah over the hijab ban in educational institutes and changes to textbooks brought in by the former BJP government, state education minister Madhu Bangarappa on Tuesday said that the Congress government will take a “decision that will benefit all students”.

State education minister says decision on Hijab ban will be in students’ favour. (ANI)
Refusing to comment on the hijab row as the matter is sub-judice, Bangarappa said, “The case is currently in the court and the law department will fight it legally. It would be wrong to comment on it further. But we will take a decision that will benefit all students.”

On Monday, about 30 academicians met CM Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru, and submitted a memorandum with various demands to reform the education sector.

“Thousands of girls are deprived of education due to the hijab controversy,” they said in the memorandum, urging the government to revoke a ban on students wearing the hijab to classes.

A controversy erupted in the state in December 2021 when six students of a government pre-university college in Udupi district protested after being barred from attending classes for wearing the headscarf. After the state government issued an order banning entry to classes of students wearing the hijab, the matter reached the Karnataka high court on January 31 last year. While the high court ruled that hijab is not “essential” to the practice of Islam, the Supreme Court in October last year referred the case to a bench led by Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud.

Ahead of the elections, the Congress in its manifesto said that the BJP “distorted textbooks” by “insulting great souls of Karnataka such as Vishwaguru Basavanna, Rashtrakavi Kuvempu”. The party promised it will restore the “true values of Bharath and Karnataka and scientific temper”.

On Tuesday, Bangarappa, who was the vice president of the Congress’ manifesto committee, said, “We have already said that students come to schools to get educated and we don’t want it to be disturbed, and there should be no mistake on part of the government or me or officials or the system in this regard. We have given the commitment.”

He further said, “In the manifesto, we had said clearly that textbook revision will take place in the interest of the students’ future. We don’t want their minds to get polluted.”

The textbooks with changes made by the BJP government have already been dispatched and the school session begins from Wednesday.

“The challenge before us now is, how we will do it (review the changes) with care, without affecting the students and their studies,” Bangarappa said. The commitment in the manifesto will be taken forward with the guidance of the chief minister and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, he said.

Congress leader and public works minister Satish Jarkiholi also said that the textbooks will be reviewed. “We will remove the unnecessary content in the textbooks. The process of addition and removal of new text will be done based on the report given by the expert committee,” he said in Belagavi.

The Congress government is expected to set up a committee to review the revisions made to the textbooks, a senior leader familiar with the matter said.

Former CM Basavaraj Bommai, however, took exception to the Congress government’s plans of reviewing the changes made to the textbooks.

“We had introduced certain new lessons based on Indian culture, literature and principles. However, the new government is trying to target this, and is set to form a new committee to reverse this. The society will respond to this,” Bommai said.

“Parents are observing the moves of the new government. Students should not be inconvenienced due to frequent revisions in textbooks. Let us see how responsibly this government will behave,” he said.
