  • Introducing Falun Dafa Practice at Book Fairs and Flower Shows

Introducing Falun Dafa Practice at Book Fairs and Flower Shows

People in India look forward to visiting book fairs and exhibitions during the winter season. Very few exhibitions have been held in the last few years due to the Covid restrictions. However, book fairs, exhibitions and flower shows are now being organized in many cities. On this occasion, Falun Dafa practitioners from India are also participating in these fairs and making people aware of this unique spiritual practice.
Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) is an ancient cultivation practice that teaches five gentle exercises, including meditation. Falun Dafa was first introduced to the public in China in May 1992 by Mr. Li Hongzhi. Today, it is practiced by over 100 million people in over 100 countries. But the sad thing is that China, which is the birthplace of Falun Dafa, has been suppressing it since July 20, 1999, which continues to this day.
Book fairs organized in different cities
Book fairs were organized in Pondicherry, Pune, Kolkata and Delhi in the last few months. Falun Dafa practitioners from different cities participated in these book fairs. A large number of people visited the Falun Dafa stalls during these book fairs. Practitioners regularly demonstrated the five exercises of Falun Dafa and distributed information leaflets about the exercises. The abhyasis also distributed paper lotus flowers to the people. Many visitors expressed interest in learning the Falun Dafa exercises and were surprised to hear that the practitioners always teach the exercises completely free of charge.
Annual “Chitra Santhe” Art Exhibition in Bangalore
The annual art exhibition “Chitra Santhe” was organized in Bangalore on Sunday, 8th January this year. More than 1200 stalls displayed their art in this exhibition and lakhs of people visited this fair. Falun Dafa practitioners also set up stalls on the occasion and displayed art paintings related to “True Compassion & Tolerance” to the public. He also distributed fliers to tell people about the Chinese Communist Party’s 23-year repression of Falun Dafa practitioners.
    Bangalore Flower Show
The popular flower show was held in Bangalore’s Lalbagh Garden in January this year. Falun Dafa practitioners also set up a stall on the occasion, where they demonstrated exercises and distributed information about the exercises. The main attraction of the flower show was a huge mural made of flowers depicting a lotus flower being held in the hands. The mural was written on one side in English and on the other in Kannada – “The world needs truth, compassion, tolerance”, which are the basic principles of Falun Dafa. Everyone was appreciating this mural and many youths were clicking selfies in front of it.
Indian Falun Dafa practitioners are selflessly promoting this unique practice across the country. Falun Dafa is helping people achieve good health, calm their mind and guide them on the right path in life. If you are interested in learning this exercise, you can register for the free webinar at www.LearnFG.in. You can find more information about this practice at www.falundafa.org.

  • Manipur: 7,000 moved to relief centres in worst-hit Churachandpur

Manipur: 7,000 moved to relief centres in worst-hit Churachandpur

A TRAIL of broken glass pieces and torched vehicles —as well as shops with shutters down —along the arterial Tidim Road speak volumes of the unrest Manipur’s Churachandpur town has witnessed since May 3. The road leads to the heart of the town where a poster has been put up. It has a photograph of a nurse, and says: “Martyred for the tribal cause.”

The photograph is of 34-year-old Nhianghoiching, who was among the three people shot dead allegedly by security personnel Friday night as a large group of people gathered on the road to block, what they believed, the evacuation of stranded Meiteis from the Kuki-dominated area in security vehicles.

It was in Churachandpur that violence first erupted during a rally by a tribal students’ group against the Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The violence soon escalated and spread across the state – largely clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities – in which at least 52 people were killed. Curfew was clamped in the town, which saw at least 12 deaths, like several other areas of the state.

On Sunday, the curfew was relaxed for a few hours – only the second time since May 3. Although the town has been peaceful since Saturday, when curfew was first relaxed for a few hours in the evening, tension continues as there have been fears of a backlash against the Meiteis, who constitute 53 per cent of Manipur’s population but are in a minority in this district.

According to a senior administrator, around 5,500 people, mostly Meiteis, have been evacuated from their homes in Churachandpur so far. They are currently housed in four relief camps across the district. It is the evacuation of these stranded people, which is now the primary bone of contention and cause of tension in the town.

In Meitei-dominated Imphal, thousands of Kukis are similarly being housed in relief camps across the city.

“The main bargain is that we want the people in Imphal to come back home safely. It’s not that we want the Meiteis here to be hurt, but we don’t want them to be sent back to Imphal till our people are brought back – a mutual exchange. Even if there are rumours of their movement, people will gather on the road,” said D J Haokip, a student leader.

On Saturday evening, civil society organisations met with the district administration over this. “Our negotiation is over the mutual exchange of stranded people that the government needs to expedite. The distance between Churachandpur and Imphal is 64 km and includes the jurisdiction of four district administrations, and the safe passage of our people is the first priority right now,” said Muan Tombing, secretary of Indigenous Tribal Leaders.

The Meitei localities in the town remain deserted, with many of the houses torched.

Robina Laishram (35), a teacher in a government institute, moved to the district administration’s mini secretariat, which is currently functioning as a relief centre, along with her five-month-old baby and younger sister May 4 morning, after spending a tense night.

“We just switched off our lights and stayed put. Some people came to the teaching quarters asking if there were any Meitei people there but the guard helped us and said no. The next morning, I came here with police escort after reaching out through my husband, who is with the SSB,” she said.

Although Robina says the next two nights at the camp were tense as well, with the evacuees aware of their precarious position, she is measured in her words. “We just want the situation to end and the matter resolved. We don’t want any tempers to be provoked on either side so that we can leave safely from here,” she said.

“What is the situation like outside? When can we go home?” asked Donita Naorem (21), a first-year student at Churachandpur Medical College. She has been at the camp since May 3 night, when she says security personnel arrived at their hostel after miscreants set a nearby house on fire.

Volunteers from the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) in the town, while helping Kukis in Imphal find their way to relief centres there, are also providing food supplies to the camp in the administrative complex.

“We are trying to make sure they are safe and well-fed so that there can be peace. If there’s any harm to them, it harms the possibility of the safety of the stranded Kukis in Imphal,” said Gracie, a PhD student and office-bearer of the KSO.

The tension over the question of evacuation is reflected in the road blockades from the beginning of Churachandpur district’s border with the Meitei-dominated Bishnupur district till the town – with rocks, felled trees, burnt vehicles, furniture and tin sheets.

Ginmuan Khuptong (29) said he has been joining other locals every evening on Tidim Road to “maintain vigilance” against possible movements.

Closer to Bishnupur border, there are other tensions. A few kilometres from Torbung, where the violence began on May 3, at Tollen village, locals say men in every household are functioning as “village defence volunteers” against what they say is the fear of attacks from across the border. Some, such as Paojagou Lupho (32), are armed.

  • Kerala: 22 Dead After Tourist Houseboat Capsizes In Malappuram, Rescue Operations Underway

Kerala: 22 Dead After Tourist Houseboat Capsizes In Malappuram, Rescue Operations Underway

Twenty two people, including women and children, were killed in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Sunday, when a houseboat with more than 30 passengers on board capsized and sank near the Thoovaltheeram beach in the Tanur area, the state government said. The rescue operation is still underway as of today morning.

Monday has been declared a day of official mourning and all government programmes stand postponed as a mark of respect to the victims.

A senior district official told PTI that all the 22 people whose bodies have been recovered have been identified. “We have requested the help of all agencies. NDRF and Coast Guard teams have already reached the spot. We have also sought the Navy’s help,” the official said.https://d-2672324256672635721.ampproject.net/2304212144000/frame.html

More people are believed to be trapped under boat this morning and rescue operations are underway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each victim. “Pained by the loss of lives due to the boat mishap in Malappuram, Kerala. Condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF (Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund) would be provided to the next of kin of each deceased,” Modi was quoted as saying in a tweet by the Prime Minister’s Office.https://d-2672324256672635721.ampproject.net/2304212144000/frame.html

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan too issued a statement condoling the deaths and directed the district collector to carry out a coordinated emergency rescue operation. “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the Tanur boat accident in Malappuram. Have directed the District administration to effectively coordinate rescue operations, which are being overseen by Cabinet Ministers. Heartfelt condolences to the grieving families & friends,” he said in a tweet.https://d-2672324256672635721.ampproject.net/2304212144000/frame.html

    Cause yet to be determined

Earlier, PK Kunhalikutty, an MLA of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), said the toll is expected to go up as rescue operations continue.  “It is a very tragic and unfortunate incident,” the former minister said.

Speaking to reporters from a government hospital near Tanur, he said overcrowding is believed to have been the reason behind the vessel capsizing. Boats are not supposed to go out for rides after 6 pm but it is believed that the rule was violated in this case, he added.

The incident occurred around 7 pm near an estuary close to the Thoovaltheeram beach in Tanur, the police said. Those rescued were admitted to nearby private and government hospitals. The exact cause of the accident is not known at present, they added.

  • India has the most uncontrollable press: Jaishankar reacts to country’s low ranking on press index

India has the most uncontrollable press: Jaishankar reacts to country’s low ranking on press index

MYSURU: India has the most uncontrollable press, said External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday in response to a question about the low ranking of India on the press index.
During the interactive session on the Foreign Policy of the Modi Government, Jaishankar said, “I was amazed at our number. I thought we had the most uncontrollable press, and somebody is getting something fundamentally wrong.
Comparing India’s rank with Afghanistan, EAM said, “Afghanistan was freer than us. Can you imagine? Look, these are all I mean, I see the democracy index, freedom index, religious freedom index, and press freedom index.”
Terming the press index “mind games,” Jaishankar said that these are the ways of playing the mind games which are like lowering the rank of the country whom you don’t like while others do not.
This statement came days after Reporters Without Borders (RSF) released their press index and ranked India at 161. While Afghanistan stood at 152. China drops to the second-lowest spot on the 2023 World Freedom Press Index, standing at 179th rank.
Last year, India stood at 150th rank. This time, India falls 11 ranks.
During the session, Jaishankar took a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and said that he was taking classes in China from the Chinese ambassador.
He said, “I would have offered to take classes on China from Rahul Gandhi but I discovered he was taking classes on China from the Chinese ambassador,” responding to the Congress leader’s criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi government’s handling of relations with China.
Jaishankar referred to Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with the Chinese ambassador to India during the Doklam crisis. He attacked the government, suggesting that new territory had been lost to China’s salami slicing.
“I know everything in politics is political. I accept that. But I think on certain issues, we have a collective responsibility to at least behave in a way that we do not weaken our (India’s) collective position abroad to do what we have seen in the last three years in China,” Jaishankar said, adding, “often very misleading narratives are put in.”
Jaishankar also hit out at misleading narratives and misrepresentations, adding, “We had, for example…a bridge which the Chinese were building on Pangong Tso. Now, the reality was that the particular area first Chinese came in 1959, and then they occupied it in 1962. But that’s not the way it was put across. This happened in the case of some of the so-called model villages as well, that they were built on areas which we lost in 62 or before 62. Now, I don’t believe you will very rarely hear me say 1962, that shouldn’t have happened, or you are wrong, or you are responsible. What has happened has happened. It’s our collective, I would say failure or responsibility. I do not necessarily attribute political colouring to it. I would like to see is actually a serious China conversation. I’m prepared to accept that there are different viewpoints on that, but if you reduce it to kind of slanging match, what can I say after that?”
