CM lashes out at the movie ‘The Kerala Story’; calls it propaganda of the Sangh Parivar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The movie ‘The Kerala Story’ furthers the propaganda of the Sangh Parivar by portraying Kerala, which is the land of secularism, as the epicenter of religious terrorism, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

Cautioning people of the state to be wary of attempts to spread unrest in society through propaganda, the Chief Minister warned of legal action against any such ‘anti-social’ acts.

The teaser of the movie ‘The Kerala Story’, written and directed by Sudipto Sen, was released recently. The film claims close to 32,000 women allegedly went missing in Kerala and that they converted, got radicalised, and were deployed in various terror missions.

“It is only deliberate that the movie is based on ‘Love Jihad’, a claim that was rejected by investigative agencies, courts, and the Union Home Ministry. This is done by the Sangh Parivar to demean Kerala before the world, destroy its secular atmosphere and sow the seeds of communalism,” the Chief Minister said in a Facebook post.

Pinarayi said the Sangh Parivar has come up with a movie based on falsehood as its politics was not fruitful in Kerala. The movie’s teaser puts out a huge lie that 32,000 women from Kerala were converted and enrolled in Islamic State. This is nothing but a false story produced in the Sangh Parivar factory of lies, he said.

“People who use cinema to create divide and factionalism in society cannot be justified in the name of creative freedom,” Pinarayi said. He added that creative freedom does not mean the license to communalise society and spread lies.

The ruling CPI(M) and opposition Congress in the state had earlier lashed out against the controversial upcoming movie, calling it an attempt to destroy the communal harmony of the state.

  • Orphanage goes beyond shelter, helps girls find footing and forever homes

Orphanage goes beyond shelter, helps girls find footing and forever homes

Inaya Sadik Khan was nine when her truck driver father died. Initially studying at a BMC school, she graduated in Commerce, mastered in Management Studies and now is an assistant vice-president with an MNC. She lives with her highly paid chef husband and 11-year-old son at an apartment in tony Cuffe Parade.
If you think the orphaned girl’s journey from a tiny tenement to the upscale Cuffe Parade apartment was smooth, think again.
Much before Khan scaled heights in the corporate world, it was Anjuman-I-Islam’s AD Bawla Female Orphanage, founded in the 1960s, at Versova, Andheri (West) which sheltered her. It is here that she shook off the “inferiority complex” that often shackles orphans, making them timid and introverted.
But it is this orphanage, which nurtured her, helped her cross hurdles and confront challenges. “This orphanage sheltered me and taught me to walk with my head held high. It trained me in life skills,” she explained.
After her father’s sudden death, Khan’s devastated mother began giving Quran tuition to neighbourhood children as this is the only work, she knew. Raising four children was beyond her capacity and she put Inaya into the orphanage.
This orphanage is different. How? Apart from sheltering the girls, it also tries to find suitable matches for them once they turn 18 and leave-the Child Welfare Committee rule says that shelter homes cannot keep children after they become major.
“We have gone a step ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s popular slogan ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’. We have added ‘Beti Basao’ (get daughters settled) to the slogan,” explained senior radiologist and Anjuman’s President Dr Zahir Kazi. “Being orphans (having lost one parent or both), these girls are vulnerable and may get exploited. We help find suitable boys for them.”
Khan was lucky that she did not have to wait long before a good marriage proposal came her way.
Sadik Khan, then a chef at a five-star hotel in South Mumbai, would often visit the orphanage to donate money. Since his first wife had died of cancer, he would remain depressed. Then one day the superintendent told him about Inaya. Initially, he was reluctant, but after sometime agreed to speak to Inaya over phone. He took an instant liking and so did his mother before they married.
“I was rejected a couple of times by some suitors’ families once they found out that I grew up in an orphanage. This mindset must change,” said Khan, whose in-laws, she says, “treats me like their daughter.”
The wedding of orphaned girl Naeema with Abdul Shaikh, a postal service employee, became a talk of the town in 2018. Naeema’s mother after separating from her father, abandoned her and her sister Rubina on a local train. The cops took the two minor sisters to a children’s home before they were transferred to the orphanage.
Shaikh, also an orphan, had grown up at shelter homes in Pune and Ulhasnagar. Then he joined Bedekar College in Thane for a Bachelor in Arts. Its principal Suchitra Naik adopted Shaikh and he began living with them as their son.
“My parents (the Naiks) never asked me to change my religion and they came all the way from Kalyan to bless me on my wedding with Naeema at Versova,” said Shaikh whose search for a suitable girl ended at the Versova orphanage.
But why did he insist on marrying an orphan? “Since I’m an orphan, I wanted a wife who knows what it means to be an orphan, and who could love me. Orphans do not crave anything more than love,” he said. The couple have an eighteen-month-old son.
That apart, many of the orphaned girls have found their own identity as entrepreneurs. For instance Ishrat Nazrul Islam Jamadar who was orphaned at six, graduated in commerce, trained as a hairstylist, and now runs two salons in the city.

  • More than 19 thousand reservoirs are drying up

More than 19 thousand reservoirs are drying up

Bhubaneswar: Odisha, which is very rich with natural resources, has found places in top five positions in the first-ever census of water bodies conducted by the Jal Shakti Ministry. However, 19,630 water bodies in the state are not in use on account of drying up, siltation, salinity, destroyed beyond repair and other reasons.

As per the census, the top five states in terms of number of water bodies are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Assam which constitute around 63 per cent of the total water bodies in the country.

In terms of ponds, Odisha has remained at No 4 at all-India level while the state is at 3rd position when water tanks are counted. Odisha has remained at 5th position in census of lakes and 4th position in reservoirs, the report says.

The census also found that 89.2 per cent (1,62,207) water bodies are in use whereas the rest 10.8 per cent (19,630) are not in use on account of drying up, siltation, salinity, destruction beyond repair and other reasons. Out of ‘in use’ water bodies, a major proportion of water bodies are used in pisciculture followed by irrigation.

It was also found that only 3 per cent (5,445) of the water bodies in Odisha are covered in the district irrigation plan/state irrigation plan. Among these, 44.9 per cent (2,444) are tanks, 39.1 per cent (2,129) are ponds and the remaining 16.0 per cent (872) are lakes, reservoirs, water conservation schemes/percolation tanks/check dams etc.

In the first census of water bodies, 1,81,837 water bodies have been enumerated in the state of Odisha, out of which 97.9 per cent (1,78,054) are in rural areas and the remaining 2.1 per cent (3,783) are in urban areas.

Similarly, 50.9 per cent (92,575) of water bodies are privately owned whereas the remaining 49.1 per cent (89,262) are under public ownership.

By location, 31.3 per cent (56,900) water bodies are located in tribal areas and the remaining 68.7 per cent (1,24,937) are located in areas under drought prone areas, flood prone areas, Naxal-affected areas and other areas.

There are a total of 7,109 natural and 1,74,728 man-made water bodies in the state. Out of 7,109 natural water bodies, 97.3 per cent (6,915) are located in rural areas whereas the remaining 2.7 per cent (194) are located in urban areas.

Out of 1,74,728 man-made water bodies, 97.9 per cent (1,71,139) water bodies are located in rural areas and the remaining 2.1 per cent (3,589) are located in urban areas.

Commenting on the census report, Ranjan Panda, a water activist and popularly known as waterman of Odisha, said the state has such a large number of water bodies because, jamidars and community leaders have dug many ponds in rural areas across the state. Besides, several water bodies have been created under government schemes and programmes.

However, the government needs to come up with a specific policy or programme for conservation and redevelopment of water bodies, he said.

Apart from the above, there is a need to conduct another survey of the water bodies, which were destroyed or dried up. Accordingly, an action plan should be prepared for revival of such water bodies, suggested Panda.

Indian-origin teen charged over online banking scam in UK

London: An Indian-origin teen in the UK has been charged with fraud offences as part of an investigation into a website, which enabled criminals to subvert banking anti-fraud measures.

Vijayasidhurshan Vijayanathan, 19, from Buckinghamshire, was recently charged along with two others with conspiracy to make and supply articles for use in fraud, and was arrested last month, UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) said.

Cybercrime investigators from NCA began probing the paid for subscription website www.OTP.Agency in June 2020.

The site provided a service to criminals by helping them socially engineer bank account holders into disclosing genuine one-time-passcodes, or give other personally identifiable information, allowing multi-factor authentication to be bypassed.

This granted access to a victim’s online banking or other accounts, enabling criminals to complete fraudulent online transactions.

“This website was essentially a one-stop-shop which provided tools that made it easy for criminals to access bank accounts of members of the public and steal from them,” Anna Smith, Operations Manager from the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, said.

Investigators believe over 12,500 members of the public were targeted between September 2019 and March 2021, when the alleged website controllers were arrested and it was taken offline.

“Criminals may pretend to be a trusted person or company when they call, email or message you. If something seems suspicious or unexpected, such as requests for personal information, contact the organisation directly to check using details published on their official website,” Smith said, urging those using online banking services to be vigilant.
