  • Eastern India may experience heat wave in May, says IMD

Eastern India may experience heat wave in May, says IMD

Parts of eastern India, including Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha, are likely to face above-normal temperatures in May with a likelihood of heat wave conditions on some days, the weather office has said.

However, parts of northwest and west-central India may experience warmer nights and below-normal temperatures during the day, the India Meteorological Department said in the monthly outlook for temperature and rainfall for May.

It said normal to above-normal rainfall is expected in the northwest and west central parts of the country in May, including in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and parts of western Uttar Pradesh. Large swathes of the northeastern region, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and south Karnataka, are expected to witness below-normal rains.

According to the weather office, the average rainfall in May is likely to be 91-109 per cent of the Long Period Average of 61.4 mm.

“Above-normal heat wave days are expected over most parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, east Uttar Pradesh, coastal Andhra Pradesh and some parts of North Chhattisgarh, east Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and coastal Gujarat during May,” IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said here.

He said the neutral El Nino prevalent over the equatorial Pacific region is expected to continue through May with a majority of weather models indicating the region beginning to warm up during the monsoon season.

El Nino, or warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, is said to have an impact on monsoon rains in India. However, other factors such as the sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean (known as the Indian Ocean Dipole) are also known to influence the weather.

Mohapatra said the neutral IOD conditions prevailing over the Indian Ocean are likely to turn positive during the upcoming season. He said positive Indian Ocean Dipole conditions are known to favour the Indian monsoon and help temper the impact of El Nino.

Earlier this month, the IMD forecast a normal monsoon season with 96 per cent rainfall of the Long Period Average of 87 cm rainfall. The weather office is expected to update its forecast towards the end of May.

  • BJP, BJD and Congress eyeing Adivasi and Agharia votes for Jharsuguda bypoll

BJP, BJD and Congress eyeing Adivasi and Agharia votes for Jharsuguda bypoll

Given the fact that tribal and Agharia voters constitute 66 percent of the total voters in the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency; none among the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), and the Congress can afford to ignore them.

No wonder that they all are putting their best foot forward to woo these voters for the upcoming May 10 Jharsuguda by-election.

The political parties are well aware that the party which will be able to garner the maximum votes from these two sections will be in a favorable position.

Tribal voters alone constitute 48 percent of the total voters of the constituency. These voters belonging to Gond, Kisan, Khadia, Kol and Bhuyan tribes mostly live in Kirimira and Laikera blocks.

Late leader Naba Das, during his political career, had always been enjoying the support of these voters. He used to visit the Jangha Baddeo temple to worship the presiding deity of the Gond Samaj in Laikera block.

The national conference of Gondwana Gond Mahasabha was held in Jharsuguda on February 11. While the absence of the late leader Das was well felt, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan made his presence felt. The Saffron party is trying to garner more tribal votes by including Amarendra Pratap Singh, the successor of freedom fighter Karunakar Singh Nayak.

On the other hand, the conch party is counting on turncoat Mahendra Nayak, who switched over from Congress to the BJD, to woo the tribal voters.

“In the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency, 48 percent of the total voters are tribal voters. And they would cast their votes for the BJD,” said BJD MP, Niranjan Bisi.

Senior BJP leader Rabi Nayak said, “In the past, Tankadhar Tripathy (BJP’s pick for the Jharsuguda bypoll) fought for the poor, fought to get them pucca houses, fought for tribals. Because of this, they are supporting him.”

Reasoning why the tribal voters will exercise their franchise for the Congress, senior leader Bhujabal Majhi said, “The tribal voters will vote for the Congress. They know the Congress is for the tribal people.”

The Agharia voters constitute 18 percent of the total voters of the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency. The grand old party’s candidate Tarun Pandey belongs to this caste. So, the party is hopeful that it would garner maximum votes.

“Since I belong to the Agharia caste, it would help me a lot,” said Pandey.

On the other hand, the BJD and BJP have made their own strategies to woo these voters.

“We will get votes from all the sections. They will elect our party. And the Congress party is the ‘B’ team of the Biju Janata Dal,” said BJP candidate, Tankadhar Tripathy.

Exuding hopes, BJD candidate Dipali Das said, “It is the development that plays a vital role. People are with that party which has brought them development.”

  • Decision to register FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on complaint of sexual harassment of women wrestlers: Delhi Police tells SC

Decision to register FIR against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh on complaint of sexual harassment of women wrestlers: Delhi Police tells SC

The Delhi Police on Friday told the Supreme Court that it will register FIR against against BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over the complaint of women wrestlers regarding alleged sexual harassment by him.

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta informed a bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha about the latest stand of the Delhi Police. The bench was hearing a petition filed by women wrestlers, who have been protesting in Jantar Mantar over past few days, seeking action against Brij Bhushan Sharan.

Though the SG said that nothing survives in the petition in view of the decision of the Delhi Police, the petitioners’ counsel Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal pressed for directions seeking safety of the women.

“We’re worried on two grounds- number one, security and safety. Second, there are 40 cases against him. I’ll give you the list”, Sibal said. He handed over a sealed cover regarding the threat perception of a minor girl who is an alleged victim of sexual assault.

When the SG attempted to oppose the passing of further directions in the petition, CJI told him, “You should support this, they’re girls…”.

“My Solicitor, we’ll record your statement that FIR is being registered. Second we’ll say that let security be provided to her. Instead of disposing it, we’ll take it after a week”, CJI stated.

“Then it is going in a different direction”, SG protested.

“We will not monitor the investigation. We’ll just ask you to come tell us what is being done”, CJI clarified.

The bench recorded the statement of SG regarding the decision of the Delhi Police to register FIR. The bench further directed the Delhi police to make an adequate assessment of threat perception and provide security to minor girl.

“Our direction to provide security to minor girl shall not stand in the way of commissioner making independent threat perception for other complainants for security”, the bench clarified. It is to be noted that the bench has not disposed of the petition and has posted it next Friday.

“Let security be provided, you can apprise the court of security. Let’s see what happens, it’s an evolving situation. List on Friday”, CJI told the SG.

In the last hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had informed the Supreme Court that the authorities intended to conduct a preliminary enquiry in the matter. Appearing for the Delhi Police, the SG had added that if the Top Court directs, they were ready to register the FIR.
