    Indigo reports best ever fourth quarter net profits at Rs 9,192 million

    NEW DELHI: IndiGo continued on the path of profitability as it reported its best-ever fourth-quarter net profit of Rs 9,192 million for the quarter ended March 2023, a 155 per cent jump year-on-year. Excluding foreign exchange gain of Rs 2,528 million, the net profit for the quarter aggregated to Rs 6,664 million.

    For the year ended March 2023, IndiGo reported a profit of INR 26,540 million, excluding foreign exchange impact. Including foreign exchange impact, IndiGo reported a net loss of INR 3,058 million for the year. “The profits of the third and the fourth quarters largely compensated for the losses incurred in the first and the second quarters,” Indigo said.

    Revenue from Operations increased by 76.5 per cent to Rs 141,606 million in the March quarter and increased by 110 per cent to Rs 544,465 million in 2022-23. Coming to passengers number, it increased by 60.5 per cent to 23.4 million during the March quarter. For the entire year, passenger numbers increased by 71.9 per cent to 85.6 million.

    “With a combination of robust market demand and focused execution of our strategy, this was the second consecutive quarter wherein we produced strong operational and financial results, as we reported the highest ever fourth-quarter net profit of 9,192 million rupees,” Pieter Elbers, CEO, Indigo said. “The companywide initiatives undertaken based on the three strategic pillars of Reassure, Create and Develop enabled us to end the year on a strong note with record revenues.

    IndiGo is amongst the fastest-growing low-cost carriers. It had a fleet of 304 aircraft and provided scheduled services to 78 domestic and 22 international destinations as of March 2023.

    Manipur: Fresh Violence In Churachandpur; IndiGo To Operate Special Flights From Imphal

    The death toll in the Manipur carnage increased to 54, according to officials. Of the 54 dead, 16 bodies were kept in the morgue of the Churachandpur district hospital while 15 bodies were in Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal East district, officials said, adding that the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences at Lamphel in Imphal West district reported 23 dead.

    IndiGo to operate additional flights in Manipur
    On Saturday, low-cost carrier IndiGo issued a statement saying that the airline will operate two special additional flights from Imphal to Kolkata on May 6 amid the tension in Manipur. “In view of the prevailing situation in Manipur, IndiGo will operate two special additional flights from Imphal to Kolkata on May 6, 2023, adding more capacity for travellers flying out from the state,” it stated.

    DGP lauds forces’ prompt action
    Manipur Director General of Police P Doungel lauded security forces’ prompt response in the wake of the violence that erupted in the state earlier this week. Notably, security forces including Indian Army and Assam Rifles were requisitioned by the state government to help restore law and order in the state following the violence between the tribal communities.

    “Because of the security forces, the situation has improved and we have received strict orders that must not spare those who contribute to violence and strict action must be taken against them,” DGP Doungel told ANI.

    “Various kinds of forces have been deployed in Manipur including RAF, BSF, CRPF etc. To manage all the forces former Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) chief Kuldeep Singh has been appointed as the security advisor. While the State government appointed Additional Director-General of Police (Intelligence), Ashutosh Sinha as the overall operational commander to control the situation in Manipur,” he said.

    Total 13,000 civilians rescued: Army
    The Army and Assam Rifles issued a joint statement saying that more than 100 columns are working tirelessly towards restoring law and order in Manipur at the earliest. Nearly 10,000 soldiers from the Army & AR have been deployed in the state.

    “In the past approximately 48 hours, Army, Assam Rifles & Air Force along with civil administration have worked tirelessly to restore law and order and bring back normalcy in Manipur. Proactive rescue operations, the conduct of flag marches, area domination, and interaction with locals/ influencers to reassure them of their personal safety were some of the major activities that were & are being undertaken. As of date, more than 100 columns are working tirelessly towards restoring law & order in Manipur at the earliest. Indian Army remains committed to restoring law & order & appeals for peace & urges all communities to shun the path of violence,” the statement read.

    Indigo starts Dharamshala-Delhi flight

    IndiGo today commenced a direct flight between Dharamsala and Delhi. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur participated in the inaugural ceremony of the IndiGo flight to Dharamsala, virtually.

    Talking to The Tribune, he said it was the fifth commercial flight to operate between Delhi and Dharamsala form the Gaggal airport in Kangra district. The increased number of flights from Delhi to Dharamsala would boost tourism in Kangra, Chamba, Una, Mandi and Hamirpur.

    He said the expansion of the Gaggal airport was the Centre’s priority. Now the ball was in the court of the state government. It should acquire and hand over the land needed for the expansion to the Airports Authorities of India (AAI) at the earliest so that the work could begin, he said.

    Vinay Malhotra, head of global sales, IndiGo, said, “We are pleased to announce the launch of our operations from Dharamsala, the 78th domestic destination, making our way into the serene valleys of HP. Direct connectivity to Dharamsala will provide a gateway for tourists to explore the local markets, temples, monasteries, museums, churches and unwind in the picturesque mountains of HP. The direct flight from Delhi will also connect HP to the rest of the country and international destinations in Asia, Middle East and Europe.”

    At present, SpiceJet and Air India operate two flights each between Dharamsala and Delhi daily. With IndiGo starting the service from today, there will be five flights a day on the route. Air India also operates a flight between Chandigarh and Dharamsala for five days in a week.

    The Gaggal airport is the only domestic airport that has regular air connectivity. A proposal has been mooted for its expansion and the Centre has sanctioned Rs 400 crore for the project. The state has also proposed a budget of Rs 2,000 crore for the project.
