Maoists decamp with huge cache of explosives in Jharkhand

RANCHI: Amid claims made by the government that Maoist incidents have gone down, a squad of the CPI (Maoists) decamped with huge amounts of explosives and detonators from a godown of a private firm that supplies explosives for mining activities in Jharkhand.

The incident took place near Parambaljori village in the jungles of Kolhan under Noamundi police station in West Singhbhum a week after Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that the incidents involving Maoist violence have come down by 76%, from the peak in 2010 while the loss of lives has also come down by 78%.

The operation was executed on Thursday, when Ram Navami was celebrated with great fervour across Jharkhand and the entire police force was busy maintaining law and order. The police said a group of around 30 Maoists swooped over the godown around 10 pm and decamped with an unspecified number of explosives and detonators after overpowering the guard deployed there.

“There were two units of the company located around 1.5 km, where private guards were deployed by the company. The Maoists first overpowered the guards and took away whatever stocks were available there,” said the SP.

As per the company staff, there were around 500 electric detonators and 6,500 non-electric detonators in the godown, but the exact number could be known only after getting details of the stock register of the company. “The process of lodging an FIR is on and will be registered after determining the exact number of stocks available there,” said the SP.

Rs 2 lakh crore roads for Jharkhand

Union road transport and highway ministerNitinGadkarilaidthe foundation stone of the “country’s first double-decker elevated corridor” near Jamshedpur and promised road infrastructure worth Rs 2 lakh crore before 2024 in Jharkhand.

The Union minister on Thursday afternoon inaugurated and laid foundation stones of nine projects in Jamshedpur which entailed an estimated investment of Rs 3,378 crore, while he launched another 21 projects in Ranchi later in the evening incurring an expense of Rs 9,453 crore.

“This is the first four-lane double-decker elevated corridor in the country which would be built at a cost of Rs 1,876 crore. Once it is completed, it will ease traffic movement on the NH-33 connecting Ranchi and Calcutta. Today (Thursday) I am launching nearly Rs 13,296-crore projects in Jharkhand. But this is only a trailer for the film. I assure you that before 2024, road infrastructure worth Rs 2 lakh crore will be gifted to Jharkhand,” Gadkari said in Jamshedpur.

According to National Highway Authorities of India’s regional officer in Ranchi, S. K. Mishra, the bottom (ground) lane of the 10.4km-long double-decker corridorwillbeused by locals, while the first lane will be used by heavy vehicles moving between Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand and they can enter Jamshedpur through rampway alongside the elevated corridor.

The second lane will be used by only long-distance vehicles which do not have to touch Jamshedpur.

“Jharkhand is rich in mineral resources and the country needs a state like Jharkhand to be developed. Development can only happen in the form of four pillars — water, power, transport and communication. The double-decker elevated corridor and NH-33 projects are a step in this direction. We had a long history in the construction of the widening of NH-33 between Ranchi and Jamshedpur. But I am happy that the project has finally been completed,” said Gadkari who laid the foundation stones of nine road projects covering different districts of the Kolhan region.

Officials said that the double-decker corridor project will take over two years to be completed after the commencement of work. A 44km stretch between Jamshedpur and Mahulta on National Highway-33, constructed at a cost of Rs 465 crore, was among the projects unveiled in Steel City.

A senior National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) official said that this stretch would provide Delhi-Calcutta and Bombay-Calcutta connectivity via Jamshedpur, significantly reducing travel time between the destinations.

The project will also drive commercial development in Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha, he stated. As part of a Bharatmala package, a four-lane access control road will be constructed on the Raipur-Dhanbad economic corridor of NH-320, the NHAI official said.

“After completion of the project, Raipur will be commercially connected to Dhanbad and travel time between Ranchi and Bokaro will reduce drastically, leading to the social and industrial development of both the states,” the official added.

  • Congress protest in Jharkhand over questioning of Rahul Gandhi

Congress protest in Jharkhand over questioning of Rahul Gandhi

Congress supporters led by state president Rajesh Thakur on Monday staged protests and burn an effigy of Union home minister Amit Shah over Delhi police questioning Rahul Gandhi on Sunday.

The protests were held at the party headquarters in 24 districts.

The Congress MP was quizzed over his revelation that during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, he had met women who claimed to be victims of sexual exploitation and domestic violence.

“The protests were held at all the district headquarters in order to let the masses know about the tactics adopted by the Central government to intimidate Congress leaders. Through the protests we wanted the people to know that when a national leader has already sought time to reply to their (Delhi police) notice a few days ago, what was the urgency for them to again reach the door of the same leader on Sunday,” said Thakur.

State Congress spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan said that peaceful protests were held at the district headquarters.

“It was a peaceful protest and we did not indulge in blocking roads or causing discomfort to people and students during the examination time. The timing was kept between 1pm and 5pm and each of the district units was free to pick their spot and time for the protest. We have got information from all districts that the protests were held peacefully with burning of an effigy of Union home minister Shah at all locations to protest against the Delhi police,” said Ranjan.

Delhi police, who reports to the Union home ministry, had given a notice to Rahul on March 16 seeking details about women who had complained about domestic violence, molestation, and harassment during the Yatra.

  • 80 schools of Jharkhand will be under CBSE

80 schools of Jharkhand will be under CBSE

The Jharkhand government has taken a big leap in improving the quality of state-owned schools by announcing that it would start 80 model schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from April, with infrastructure on a par with elite schools.

“We are lagging behind in education and our government has taken it as a challenge to improve the standard of education. The concept of model schools in each panchayat of the state with the best infrastructure is a step in this direction. Eighty model schools in all 24 districts are planned in the first phase.

“The schools will be monitored at the highest level and I will conduct surprise inspections. Big entities like Azim Premji Foundation are also willing to train our teachers and students,” said chief minister Hemant Soren at a daylong conclave of the school management committee of model schools in Ranchi on Monday.

According to the project director of Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC), Kiran Pasi, the 80 model schools will start functioning from next month.

“However, the 325 model schools located in each block of the state will start functioning from the next academic session (2024). Work on improving infrastructure is underway on a war footing at these schools. Thereafter, over 4,000 model schools in each of the panchayats of the state will also be constructed. All these model schools will have teachers trained by experts from IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Ranchi.

“The Azim Premji Foundation will train the teachers and the school managing committee for quality education,” Pasi said.

The 80 selected schools in the first phase are 24 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, 24 state-run girls’ schools, one middle school in Pakur, 24 district (zilla) schools and seven model schools. All of them will follow the CBSE English medium syllabus.

“Till the end of the previous academic year, these 80 schools followed the curriculum and structure of the Jharkhand Council of Education Research and Training (JCERT). However, these schools will follow the CBSE English syllabus now,” Pasi added.

“Our children are not behind in any field. The problem was that the implementation of schemes was not done in right earnest at the school level. It is necessary that we connect them with resources. Our government is determined to provide the best of education for free to the poor and enable them to shine in the academic field as they have been doing in sports,” Hemant said.

Hemant also asked the school management committee members to ensure that students enrolled and attended schools regularly.

The chief minister also announced competitions among model schools wherein winning students and staff would be taken on tours to other progressive states of the country so that they could learn from the best practices adopted there.

The model schools have modern libraries, science and language labs, smart classes, ICT labs, and vocational studies along with sports infrastructure.

  • First case of H3N2 detected in Jharkhand

First case of H3N2 detected in Jharkhand

Jharkhand witnessed its first case of H3N2 influenza on Friday midnight, with a 68-year-old woman testing positive for the virus in Jamshedpur under East Singhbhum district.

East Singhbhum civil surgeon Dr Jujhar Majhi claimed that the patient’s condition was stable.

“She had been admitted to Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur with influenza-like symptoms and had no travel history. Her sample was sent to the nearest ICMR’s Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories in MGM Medical College and Hospital and was confirmed positive on Friday midnight. She has already been kept in the isolation ward of Tata Main Hospital,” Dr Majhi said.

East Singhbhum epidemiologist Dr Mohammed Asad said the family members of the infected patient had been kept under surveillance.

“We will keep them under surveillance for a week for any influenza-related symptoms. However, none of the family members has any symptoms so far,” Dr Asad said.

There has been a surge in influenza and flu-like cases in different districts of Jharkhand in the last one month.

Several samples have been tested at ICMR’s Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories housed at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi and MGM Medical College and Hospital in Jamshedpur. But this was the first sample to test positive.

The Jharkhand health department had on March 12 issued an advisory for all district surveillance units and health centres across the state to be on alert for H3N2 influenza cases and to ensure that people followed Covid-appropriate behaviour like covering mouth while coughing or sneezing,  wearing masks, using sanitisers and maintaining social distance in crowded places, practise hand hygiene and drinking plenty of fluids.

The advisory also mandates district health officials to conduct proper screening, monitoring and reporting of district-wise influenza-like cases and severe respiratory illness in all health facilities and upload the data on the health surveillance portal.

The advisory directed the district hospitals to be prepared in terms of oxygen-supported beds, drugs, medical oxygen and other equipment.

H3N2 is a non-human influenza virus that normally circulates in pigs and has infected humans, according to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Symptoms are similar to those of seasonal flu and can include fever and respiratory symptoms such as cough and runny nose, body ache, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea.

According to data shared by the Union health ministry on March 10, 451 cases of the H3N2 virus have been reported in the country between January 2 and March 5.
