    Karnataka Elections: BJP Candidate C K Ramamurthy Won Jayanagar Seat After Recount

    Bharatiya Janata Party candidate C K Ramamurthy won the Jayanagar Assembly seat in Karnataka by a slender margin of 16 votes against his Congress rival Sowmya Reddy on Saturday, as per the latest official figures.

    The elections to 224 Assembly seats in the state was held on May 10 and the polled votes were taken up for counting on Saturday. The results of the rest of the constituencies were declared and the Congress Party emerged a winner in 136 seats.

    According to reports, after several rounds of recounting Sowmya Reddy was in the lead with a narrow margin of 294 votes. This is when Congress started celebrating but the BJP asked for a recount.The Election Commission ordered the recounting of postal ballots in the Jayanagar constituency.

    “The result was announced by the officials at the Counting Centre at S S M R V College in Jayanagar” late on Saturday, a state Information Department official said in a statement about the Jayanagar constituency vote counting.

    Tension prevailed when the counting was taking place as the Congress state president D K Shivakumar along with state unit working president Ramalinga Reddy, who is also the father of Sowmya Reddy, and many other leaders staged a demonstration outside the polling booth, demanding justice.

    D K Shivakumar claimed that the election officials distorted the results on the pretext of the recount.They alleged misuse of government machinery to favour Ramamurthy.

    After the recount, the voting count of the two candidates, the numbers were a lot different than before. Sowmya Reddy dropped from 57,591 to 57,781 votes and Election officials declared Ramamurthy as the winner with a count of 57,797 votes. The two candidates stood with a difference of just 16 votes.

    Congress worker Srivastava tweeted regarding the matter claiming that Reddy won “fair and square” and that BJP manipulated the system. With this, the Congress has won 135 seats in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly. The BJP has won 66 seats and the JD(S) 19, according to the Election Commission.

    Hubli (IANS) | Voting is going on for the assembly elections in Karnataka on Wednesday. Meanwhile, following the complaint of a woman voter, a polling officer has been detained by the police. The woman alleges that the officer, while helping in the voting process, got her vote cast in favor of the BJP. The incident took place at a polling station in Chittapur constituency of Kalaburagi district. Basamma Antuman polling officer B.C. Chouhan to cast her vote in favor of Congress candidate Priyank Kharge. However, the officer cast his vote in favor of BJP candidate Manikant Rathod.

    When the woman opposed this, the Congress workers created ruckus on the spot. Priyank Kharge reached the spot and complained to Election Officer Naveen Kumar. The polling officer was immediately taken off duty and replaced by another officer.

    Based on the complaint, the polling officer was taken into police custody. In Chhatarpur constituency, Priyank Kharge, son of former minister and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, is pitted against BJP’s Manikant Rathore.

    Congress alleges that there are more than 80 criminal cases registered against Manikant Rathore. An audio clip purportedly of Manikant Rathod had gone viral on social media in which he was heard saying that Mallikarjun Kharge’s family would be wiped out.

    This led to a fierce fight between the Congress and the BJP.

Speaking to the media, DK Shivakumar said, “After winning the Karnataka elections, the government will bring a special program for the redevelopment of all the historic Anjaneya Swamy temples in the state. Apart from this, Anjanadri Development Board will be established. Congress in its manifesto has talked about banning Bajrang Dal. BJP is raising questions on this. On the other hand, when asked questions regarding this, DK Shivakumar said, “BJP people are making Bajrang Dal an issue but the party does not have any problem with this and Congress will get full majority. Anjaneya Temple and Bajrangbali can never be compared with Bajrang Dal. Bajrang Dal is a political party which does nuisance work to benefit BJP.”

    Bengaluru: The move by the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) to field Ismail Shafi Bellare, accused in the murder of BJP Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Kumar Nettaru, and Riyaz Farangipet as its candidates in the communally-sensitive Dakshina Kannada district has become a topic of discussion in Karnataka ahead of the May 10 Assembly elections.

    Nettaru (32) was hacked to death by bike-borne assailants on the night of July 26 last year at Bellare in Dakshina Kannada district.

    SDPI is fielding 19 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. Dubbed as a party of minorities, SDPI hopes to win four to five seats and make entry into the Karnataka legislature. According to sources, SDPI is likely to give a tough fight to former minister and senior Congress leader U.T. Khader in the Mangaluru (Ullal) Assembly constituency.

    The party emphasizes on ‘agitative politics’.

    Talking to IANS, SDPI’s national secretary Riyaz Farangipet said that his party is not just active during elections, but throughout the year it represents the people on one issue or the other across India.

    “Despite not being in power, SDPI ensures that the schemes of the government reaches the poor,” he said.

    Other political parties which have opened online help centres are charging money for their services, but SDPI is doing it for free, he said.

    “We are not power hungry. We want to be part of power. That is why we are focusing only on those constituencies where we can win,” said Farangipet, who is contesting from the Mangaluru (Ullal) Assembly constituency.

    Bengaluru: The BJP is going to face a litmus test in the 2023 state assembly elections in the north Karnataka region considered its bastion. Fingers are crossed over how the people of this region would react to the saffron partys experiments.

    The voters of the region played a major role in elevating the BJP to power by rallying behind former chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa who was asked to step down. The latest episodes of the exit of former CM Jagadish Shettar and Laxman Savadi, both Lingayat leaders, who are claiming humiliation by BJP leaders and joined the Congress party have forced the ruling party to do fire fighting.

    North Karnataka, comprising both Kittur and Kalyan Karnataka regions, has 13 districts with 90 assembly seats. Presently the BJP holds 52 seats, the Congress 32 and the JD (S) 6 seats.

    The region comprises Belagavi, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Gadag, Dharwad, Haveri, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal, Vijayanagar and Bellary districts. There is a direct fight between the Congress and the BJP in most of the places. The JD (S) is hopeful of garnering seats in double digits.

    The BJP is facing a challenge from the Kalyan Karnataka Rajya Paksha (KKRP) launched by mining baron-turned-politician Janardhan Reddy. The BJP has maintained a distance from him following allegations against him, leading to his exit from the party.

    Bengaluru (IANS) | The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) candidate for the Mangaluru constituency, Riyaz Farangipet, who has nominated to contest from the Ullal constituency in Mangaluru, has been charged with sedition. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is closely watching his movements. SDPI national secretary Riyaz has been accused of conspiring to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 12, 2022 in Phulwarisharif area of Bihar. The alleged links of Riyaz with the accused persons have come to the fore in the investigation. NIA has registered an FIR against him. It is alleged that he participated in the meetings with the accused in planning.

    In 2022, the NIA registered an FIR against him on charges of sedition.

    Apart from this, several cases are also registered against him in Belthangady, Mangaluru South, Konaje, Mangaluru North, East police stations in Dakshina Kannada district. He is also accused of creating enmity between groups, obstructing the duty of policemen.

    Riyaz Farangipet on Monday took out a massive rally to file nomination for the Mangaluru constituency. Sources said the SDPI had campaigned aggressively against Congress candidate Khader in the wake of the hijab controversy and the call for boycott of Muslim traders.

    Khadar has won from this constituency thrice since 2008 by defeating BJP candidates. In 2018, Khadar had defeated BJP’s Santosh Kumar Rai Boliaru by over 19,000 votes. The BJP had won this seat for three consecutive terms between 1994 and 2004.

    Khader, touted as a progressive leader, is facing a tough fight from the SDPI in the Muslim-dominated constituency this time. It was the only constituency to be won by the Congress in the 2018 elections. The BJP had won all the seats in the district.

    Karnataka elections: BJP leadership meeting to decide on candidates, Congress finalizes second list

    Bengaluru (IANS) | Assembly elections in Karnataka will be held on May 10. In such a situation, all the parties have accelerated their process of finalizing the tickets of the candidates in Karnataka. The screening committee of the ruling BJP in the state is meeting at a private resort here on Saturday to finalize candidates for the first list.

    The party had already taken opinion from the local leaders and office bearers of each assembly constituency regarding the candidates. The leaders will hold discussions with the core committee members of all the districts for two days from Saturday.

    Insiders reveal that three senior party workers in each district will finalize the list of candidates and send it to the Central Committee after considering all the information. CM Basavaraj Bommai had said that the party would take a week to announce the list of candidates.

    According to sources, the opposition Congress, which released the first list of 124 candidates, has finalized the second list of 70 candidates.

    The party had held several meetings in this regard and also discussed Siddaramaiah contesting from the Kolar constituency. His candidature for Varuna constituency has already been announced.

    State party president DK Shivakumar has been given the responsibility to quell the discontent. Sources said the list has already been sent to the high command and a final decision will be taken in New Delhi.

    Meanwhile, the JD(S), which had announced 93 candidates in December 2022, is expected to announce its second list by next week. The party is likely to decide on the Hassan assembly seat, which has resulted in discord within the family of former PM HD Deve Gowda.
