: Wresting power from the BJP will be a morale booster for the Congress, key for reviving its electoral fortunes and strengthening its credentials as the main opposition player against the saffron party, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

By ensuring a win in Karnataka, the party also wants to bounce back after the recent losses in the North-Eastern states and give it a momentum of sorts to take on the battle-ready election machinery of the BJP, later this year in the Hindi heartland states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.

The Congress is by-and-large focused on local issues and its campaign also was run by its state leaders initially.

However, its central leaders such as AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra pitched in subsequently.

This poll is also a prestige battle in a way for the grand old party with a Kannadiga Mallikarjun Kharge, who hails from Kalaburagi district, at its helm, as the national president.

The Congress that entered the campaign with the challenge of keeping at bay factionalism, especially between the camps of its two Chief Ministerial aspirants — Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar — who were often seen to be engaging in political one-upmanship, it somehow managed to put a united front and ensured that no rift came out in open and derail its prospects.

Though the campaign initially centered around its state leaders like Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, Kharge gave it momentum and thereby prepared the pitch for the party’s top leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi to join in.

The brother-sister duo extensively travelled across the state, challenging the BJP’s campaign machinery led by Modi, countering and challenging him on various issues, most importantly on the issue of corruption, while promising to provide a better alternative for Karnataka.

Their mother and former AICC president Sonia Gandhi addressed a party rally in Hubballi on Saturday.

The party held 99 public meetings and 33 roadshows by its top state and central leaders.

The Congress has set a target of winning 150 seats, and has been urging voters to ensure that it gets an absolute majority, so that BJP doesn’t “steal” the mandate by managing defections of other party legislators and “manufacture” a majority in its favour.

The Congress’s main issues to attack the BJP government in this election was over corruption/ scams and the charge of 40 per cent commission, coupled with the Adani issue.

While extensively highlighting its five key poll ‘guarantees’, the party tried to inform the people about its charge against the BJP government of having “failed in fulfilling 90 per cent of its promises” made in its 2018 manifesto.

The Congress’ has promised to implement ‘guarantees’ 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), and free travel for women in public transport buses (Shakti), on the very first day, on coming to power in the state.

At a time when it seemed like all was going well, the Congress itself waded into controversies with Siddaramaiah’s statement that “there’s already a Lingayat CM who is the most corrupt,” which the BJP turned into an “insult” to the entire Lingayat community.

Mallikarjun Kharge’s “venomous snake” barb at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then his son and Chittapur MLA Priyank Kharge ‘nalayak beta’ (incompetent son) remark against him, created a flutter in political circles, eliciting sharp reactions from the BJP.

Amid these back-to-back controversies, the Congress manifesto proposing to banning the Bajrang Dal caused some anxiety as it threatened to hurt the optics, as BJP and PM Modi aggressively picked up the issue to portray the grand old party as being against Lord Hanuman and the sentiments of Hindus.

Bengaluru (IANS): BJP national chief J.P. Nadda released the party’s manifesto for the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections on Monday, promising the implementation of Uniform Civil Code, free half-litre Nandini milk, and three free of cost LPG gas cylinders to the poor families.

The saffron party called it “Praja Pranalike (people’s manifesto)”.

Nadda released the manifesto here in the presence of former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, Union Minister for Mine, Coal and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi, Karnataka BJP President Nalinkumar Kateel and others.

The party has assured free LPG cylinders for BPL card holders thrice during Ugadi, Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali festivals.

Karnataka: Yediyurappa slams Siddaramaiah over promise to hike reservation limit

Bengaluru: Reacting sharply to Congress leader Siddaramaiah claiming that his party would increase the reservation limit in Karnataka from 50 per cent to 75 per cent if voted to power in the upcoming Assembly elections, former chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday said the “poll promise” would never be met as the prinicipal opposition party in the state was headed for defeat.

Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, the veteran Ligayat leader said, “Since he [Siddaramaiah] is going to lose miserably, the question of increasing the reservation limit in the state does not arise.”

“We [BJP] are going to do everything in our power to form the government,” he added.

Siddaramaiah, also a former chief minister who is eyeing a fresh term in post after the May 10 Assembly polls, had tweeted, “The Congress party is committed to increasing the reservation limit from 50 per cent to 75 per cent and extend reservation to all castes based on their population.”

BJP sharpens attack on Congress in Karnataka

Bengaluru: With the political temperature rising in Karnataka for the May 10 assembly polls, the BJP has sharpened its attack on the Congress with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai stating that the opposition party has shown special love for Lingayat community after the elections were announced and pursued “divide and rule policy”.

BJP president JP Nadda, who was in Karnataka, also attacked the Congress and accused its leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah of being “patron” of PFI.

“Former CM Siddaramaiah from Congress party withdrew cases against PFI, released 1,700 PFI activists from jail…Siddaramaiah is their patron…,” Nadda said in Hubballi. The Centre banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) in September last year.

The Congress on Tuesday announced its candidate against Chief Minister Bommai from Shiggaon. The party has fielded Mohammed Yousuf Savanur from the seat. The party announced seven candidates on Tuesday and fielded former Karnataka Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar from Hubli-Dharwad-Central.

Jagadish Shettar’s resignation from BJP and his joining Congress on Monday has made Hubballi-Dharwad Central a key battle in the assembly polls. Shettar, a six-time MLA, represented the seat in the outgoing assembly and was keen to be given a ticket from the constituency.

He is the second senior leader from the Lingayat community to leave the ruling BJP and join Congress in less than a week. Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi had joined the Congress on Friday.

Basavaraj Bommai said voters from the Lingayat community “are vigilant and “have taken right decision when required”.

“Lingayat voters in Karnataka are vigilant and they have always taken the right decision when required. Congress Party has shown special love for them (Lingayat) after the Assembly elections were announced but it’s the same party which tried to divide the Lingayats and Veerashaivas. The people have not forgotten the divide-and-rule policy of the Congress party,” Bommai told reporters.

Rahul Gandhi exudes confidence about Congress victory in Karnataka polls

Bengaluru: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday exuded confidence about the party’s win in Karnataka and said that there’s a strong undercurrent in favour of the grand old party in the poll-bound State.

Addressing a gathering in Bengaluru, he said, “We will be facing elections in Karnataka and I am quite happy to know that there’s a strong undercurrent in favour of the Congress party. I am confident that the Congress party is going to win the elections.”

Launching a scathing attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, he said, “Most of us are aware of what the BJP is doing in the nation in terms of hatred, violence, and the attack on institutions. These are things that are visible to everybody. The essence and nature of our country are being attacked, and it is our duty as Congress people, as people who have helped build the modern idea of India to defend the idea of India from the RSS and the BJP.”

Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi slammed the BJP-led Centre for not providing due representation to the OBCs in government jobs.

Gandhi was addressing a gathering at the poll-bound State’s Kolar, where he made a remark on the Modi surname for which he has been convicted of criminal defamation, followed by his disqualification as MP.

Pointing to the indifference being meted out to the OBCs which are present in larger number but their representation in government jobs were less, he said, “Reservation for SC/STs should be proportional to their population. (The Union government) should lift 50 per cent cap in reservation,” he added.

In a reply to BJP’s allegations that he insulted the OBC community with Modi surname remark, the Congress leader said that the representation of OBC, and Dalits in the central government is not in line with their population.

“There are only 7 per cent of people in the government’s secretaries coming from OBC, Dalit and Adivasi communities,” Gandhi said.
