BJP to start internal review to pick candidates in Karnataka

BENGALURU: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will start the process of internal review to choose its candidates for a tightly contested assembly poll from Friday, informed sources told TNIE.

According to internal BJP sources, a team of 170 members comprising Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs), senior party leaders and state committee members will visit all assembly constituencies from Friday, and take informed opinions of former MLCs, MLAs and others on a one-to-one basis, regarding the probable candidates.

“Each team will comprise three members, and visit every assembly segment,” said sources.

“The members will collect the names and reports of all probable candidates, which will be shared with the state core committee headed by state unit president Nalin Kumar Kateel. The same list will be later submitted to the BJP’s top leadership — the central election committee — headed by BJP National President JP Nadda, with an internal survey, comments and opinion of the state committee and external (intelligence) reports,” said a party insider.

“The credentials for ticket distribution will rest heavily on the winnability factor, in which caste and community of the candidate will play a dominant role, besides past performance, popularity, organisational skills, party work etc,” he added. The BJP is likely to announce its list of candidates by next week.

Sources added that the BJP follows the same practice of strict internal review and assessment from the grassroots level, while choosing candidates for national party president to booth president.

There are 58,200 polling booths in Karnataka. The BJP has 45,000 booth committees in the state. Known for its organisational skills at the grassroots level, the party conducted its Booth Vijay Abhiyan from January 2 to 12 this year, to reach out to every household to increase its presence in every booth and assess booths where the party had secured fewer votes.

The BJP’s Shakti Kendras have been playing a key role in the capacity building of booths. The party has 6,500 Shakti Kendras (SKs) in Karnataka, each comprising three to five booths. Eight to 10 SKs constitute one Maha Shakti Kendra.

Bengaluru (IANS) | Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday said the Karnataka BJP will announce its list of candidates in the first week of April. Meanwhile, Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar has said that the second list of the Congress party will be released on March 30.

Speaking to reporters in Belagavi, Bommai said the BJP would announce the list of candidates most probably in the first week of April. “There will be a fight for the ticket as there is a demand from the winning party,” he said.

There is no coordination with the JD(S) party in the old Mysuru region. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had clearly said that there is no alliance with any party. “I am saying again. There will be no alliance with JD(S).”

Bommai said Shivakumar has been calling up all the sitting MLAs of the BJP and offering them tickets. He said, “He has been calling our MLAs since two-three days. This shows the desperation of the Congress party. They are contacting our MLAs as they have not found candidates. It also shows the bankruptcy of the Congress party.” it shows.”

Congress leader Shivakumar said the second list of 100 candidates would be declared after March 30. The party has already announced tickets for 124 candidates ahead of the BJP. “There is no disagreement. We will accommodate all party leaders,” he said.

He further said that all reports about Congress party approaching JD(S) are false. “We have not approached anyone. We will form the government on our own. He (JD(S) leader Kumaraswamy) should come forward with the names who had approached him. This is completely false,” he said.

Bengaluru (IANS) | A special court on Tuesday remanded Karnataka BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa, arrested for taking bribe in a tender scam, to five-day Lokayukta police custody for further investigation. The order was given by Judge B Jayanth Kumar of the Special Court of People’s Representatives. The Lokayukta’s counsel sought 10 days’ custody for investigation, but the MLA’s counsel requested bail as he has joined the investigation several times and is facing health issues.

Virupakshappa was arrested on Monday evening after the Karnataka High Court rejected his bail plea. When he went missing after his bail was rejected, he was chased by the Lokayukta officials and arrested after locating him near Tumakuru town.

The MLA was the chairman of public sector unit KSDL and his son was allegedly taking bribe on behalf of his father.

Vivek Subba Reddy, President of Advocates Association, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud that the general practice in the Karnataka High Court is that new cases like anticipatory bail take days and weeks for posting. But, VIP cases are shelved overnight. With this practice, the common man will lose faith in the judicial system. The letter states that it is of utmost importance that an MLA should also be treated like a common man.

Amati Shah also hoisted the 103 feet high national flag on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah recalled that hundreds of people from Gorta were killed by the Nizam’s army for hoisting a small flag. Today we have hoisted a huge flag here.

Amit Shah hit out at the Congress party for ignoring the sacrifices of hundreds of people who laid down their lives for the liberated areas under the Nizam’s rule after the rest of the country got independence.

  • Muslim quota abolished in Karnataka

    Muslim quota abolished in Karnataka

The BJP government in Karnataka has been widely criticised for scrapping the 4 per cent reservation for Muslims within the Other Backward Classes (OBC) and redistributing the quota among the politically influential Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities ahead of the Assembly elections.

The cabinet on Friday scrapped the 4 per cent reservation for Muslims under the OBC quota and included them in the 10 per cent quota for Economically Weaker Sections that include multiple communities such as Brahmins and other upper castes.

The 4 per cent quota docked from Muslims has been equally split between the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities whose share in OBC reservation would increase to 7 and 6 per cent, respectively.

Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai justified the move by saying there was no scope for religion-based reservation under the Constitution. He said the poor from all communities would qualify for the EWS quota.

While Lingayats have for long been the BJP’s key vote bank, the party fears losing sections of the community, which is why they have been tapping into the Vokkaliga community.

Senior Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao tweeted: “This is BJP’s divide & insult policy. Why sacrifice Muslims so that you can appease Lingayats & Vokkaligas? Both could’ve been given separate reservation.”

Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Madani condemned the tinkering with the reservation for Muslims and termed it as“harmful to the comprehensive development policy of the country”.

A statement issued by the organisation quoted Maulana Madani as saying that not all Muslims in Karnataka were covered under the reservation. “Unfortunately, the BJPdispensation always claims that reservations cannot be given on religious grounds, but it never considers Muslim backwardness. As far as the Karnataka issue is concerned, religion is not the basis here and not all Muslims are benefiting from it. Only 12 backward Muslim communities are covered.”

Puttanna, who resigned as BJP MLC, has been given the Rajajinagar seat, currently held by BJP veteran S Suresh Kumar. Pulakeshinagar has been kept open as there was opposition from the minority community to the candidature of MLA R Akhanda Srinivasa Murthy.

D Sudhakar has been cleared for Hiriyuru in Chitradurga district instead of BJP MLA Poornima Srinivas, daughter of former Congress minister late A Krishnappa, who switched loyalty to Congress.

Chikkaballapur BJP MP B N Bachegowda’s son and independent MLA Sharath Bachegowda has been given Hoskote seat, putting an end to speculation of minister MTB Nagaraj’s retreat to Congress.

Fractured mandate will hurt progress, claims PM Modi poll-bound Karnataka

Calling the people of Karnataka to give a clear majority to BJP in the 2023 state assembly polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday told them that a fractured mandate would not help the progress of the state.

Addressing a large gathering at the concluding ceremony of BJP’s Vijaya Sankalpa Yatra at GMIT grounds on the outskirts of Davangere, Modi while referring to the Congress-JDS coalition government of 2018 before the BJP came to power in 2019, asked the party workers and the people of Karnataka to look back at what happened earlier due to a fractured mandate.

PM Modi took a dig at the 2018 Congress- JD(S) coalition government which did not support the Kissan Samman Yojana during their regime and said they lacked the subsequent development and take-off provided by the double engine BJP government from 2019 onwards when BJP was able to take the reins of the Karnataka government.

He urged the party workers to work hard for the next three months and reach out to the nook and corner of their neighbourhood to ensure that BJP forms a government with a majority. “If you people want me to serve in every village, town and city of this state, then you have to install a strong BJP government in Karnataka,” he said.
