‘What did you do to stop corruption in Karnataka’, Rahul asks PM Modi

Bengaluru (IANS): Continuing his attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the poll-bound state of Karnataka, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain all the action he took to stop corruption in the state.

Addressing a huge public rally in Hassan, Rahul Gandhi said: “The BJP first stole your government and then, through the government, it stole money from you. Now, the PM gives speeches here. But the truth is that he knew about all the corruption that took place in Karnataka in the last three years.

“If even a six-year-old child in Karnataka knows it, the PM must also be aware of it. So, I ask him — what action have you taken to stop corruption in Karnataka in the last three years? And, against how many people did you take action?” Rahul Gandhi questioned.

“Ask any kid of Karnataka — what is the name of the government? He will tell you ’40 per cent Sarkar’. Everyone knows this. The Contractors’ Association wrote to the PM telling him about the 40 per cent commission; he may have read the letter but didn’t give any reply. Dingaleshwar Swami ji says that 30 per cent commission was taken from his mutt, and he was given a 10 per cent discount,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi further said: “In the Mysore Sandal soap scandal, a BJP MLA’s son was caught with cash. There were scams in recruitment of Police Sub-Inspectors, Asst. Professors, Asst. Engineers. There was a Cooperative Bank scam.

“Modi ji, please talk about these issues in your speeches. You come here and say that ‘Congress attacked me’. Please also tell what you did for Karnataka in the last 3 years. Here, the question is not about the PM. It is about Karnataka’s youth, farmers and women,” he said.

Posing another question to PM Modi, the former Congress president said: “Modi ji, what action did you take when violence took place at Karnataka-Maharashtra border? How did you help Karnataka in the matter of the water dispute between Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka?

“When we give speeches, we take the names of our leaders. Like I showed respect to Congress leaders before starting my speech. We talked about Siddaramaiah ji, Shivakumar ji, Kharge ji, Parameshwar ji. You (addressing the PM) come to Karnataka but don’t talk about your leaders. You don’t even take the name of Yeddyurappa ji or Bommai ji. Take the names of BJP leaders also in your speeches, they will feel good. Respect them as well,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress has laid out a roadmap for Karnataka for the next five years.

“We have brought out these schemes after talking to the public. Congress is going to give 5 revolutionary schemes to the people. We are going to put the money, looted from them by the BJP, back in their pockets,” he said.

“BJP leaders love the number 40. They took a 40 per cent commission in every work. Make them remember this ’40’ number. For 3 years, they made you remember the ’40’ number. Give them 40 seats in elections and Congress has to be given at least 150 seats because if we get less than 150 seats, the BJP will again try to ‘steal’ the government. Teach a lesson to the BJP,” Rahul Gandhi told the people.

ZSI team discovers 2 new spider species in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu

KOLKATA: Researchers of Zoological Survey of India have discovered two new species of jumping spiders from southern India, a statement issued by the surveyor said on Monday.

The two discoveries include ‘Phintelladhritiae’ from Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka and ‘Phintellaplatnicki’ from Salem district of Tamil Nadu. ‘Phintelladhritiae’ has been named in honour of Dr Dhriti Banerjee, the first woman director of the ZSI, the statement said.

Banerjee had taken over as the director of the more-than-100-year-old institution in August 2021. ‘Phintellaplatnicki’ has also been named in honour of late Dr Norman Platnick for his contribution to the field of arachnology, it said.

Arachnology is the scientific study of arachnids, which comprise spiders and related invertebrates such as scorpions and pseudoscorpions. The newly described species, which belong to the genus Phintella, are small-to-medium sized, colourful spiders, usually covered with metallic iridescent scales, the statement said.

The head is somewhat rounded or oval, relatively high with a distinct posterior slope, while the abdomen is ovoid or elongate, usually with pale and dark horizontal bands.

Members of this genus generally inhabit under leaves and barks of shrubs and grasses, the ZSI statement said. Before the discovery of these new species of jumping spiders, 12 species of Phintella were known to be valid from India.

The explorer team comprised Souvik Sen and Sudhin P P, from ZSI, Kolkata and John T D Caleb from Chennai. The discovery of these new species came up in the March 2023 issue of ‘Arthropoda Selecta’, a prestigious journal. Earlier this year, the team described another two new jumping spiders – ‘Stenaelurillusmegamalai’ and ‘Stenaelurillusneyyar’ – from the Western Ghats region.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Parameshwara Injured During Poll Campaigning in Karnataka

In a suspected case of stone-pelting, former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara sustained a head injury during a roadshow at Bhairenahalli in Koratagere Taluk. He is now recovering, doctors treating him said on Saturday.

The former state Congress chief got a deep wound on the head when a miscreant threw a stone at him in the district on Friday. He is contesting the May 10 Assembly elections from Koratagere.

“The incident of plotting and pelting stones on Parameshwar is shocking in Karnataka itself. Opposition leaders have been systematically attacked since the beginning. Is this the preliminaries behind Amit Shah’s warning that “riots will happen”?” the Congress said in a tweet.Soon after the injury, a profusely bleeding Parameshwara was rushed to a nearby Primary Health Centre, and thereafter taken to another hospital for further treatment. A team of doctors was monitoring his condition at his residence.

The Congress leader is expected to meet his supporters and well-wishers on Saturday. According to his close confidantes, this was the third occasion when stone pelting happened during election time.

The first time was when he was participating in an election rally with the Congress president M Mallikarjun Kharge and the second incident took place when he was heading to file his nomination papers.

  • Cong, Its Leaders Hurled Different Types Of Abuses At Me 91 Times : PM Modi In Poll-bound Karnataka

Cong, Its Leaders Hurled Different Types Of Abuses At Me 91 Times : PM Modi In Poll-bound Karnataka

Training guns on the Congress over its President M Mallikarjun Kharge’s ‘venomous snake’ barb at him, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said till now that party and its leaders have hurled at him different types of abuses 91 times.

Accusing the Congress of also abusing the dominant Lingayat community in poll-bound Karnataka, the Prime Minister further said the grand old party had even abused Babasaheb Ambedkar and were engaged in abusing Veer Savarkar.

Hitting out at the Congress, Modi — on his first visit to the state for campaigning after elections were declared on March 29 — said, people will respond to its abuses with votes, and as much mud they sling at BJP, the lotus will bloom.

“The Congress hates everyone who speaks about the common man, who brings out their corruption, who attacks their politics of selfishness. Congress’s hate against such people will become permanent. In this election too, the Congress once again has started abusing me,” Modi said.

Addressing a public rally here in Bidar district, he said, “someone has made a list of such abuses against me and it has been sent to me. Till now Congress people have abused me 91 times with different types. Had Congress people put efforts in good governance and boosting the morale of its workers, instead of wasting time on this dictionary of abuses, Congress would not have been in such a pathetic plight.” Making a speech in a campaign rally in poll bound Karnataka, which goes to polls on May 10, on Thursday Kharge likened Modi to a venomous snake. As a row erupted, he later backtracked stating that his intention was not to hurt anyone’s feelings and the “statement was not for PM Modi, but for the ideology he represents.” Modi said: “Insulting those who work for the poor and the country is Congress’ history”.

“I’m not the only one who has been attacked like this. Last election they ran a campaign ‘Chowkidar chor hai’, then they said ‘Modi Chor’, then they said ‘OBC community are chor’, and now just the election season has started in Karnataka they showed the guts of calling my Lingayat brothers and sisters chor.” “Congress people listen with open ears, whenever you have abused someone they have punished you in such a way that you have not been able to withstand it. This time Karnataka has decided to respond to the abuses, the pain inflicted to their pride, through votes,” he said.

Noting that abuses are hurled at him by top Congress leaders, Modi said the Congress is a party that had abused Babasaheb Ambedkar too.

“Babasaheb Ambedkar himself had once said in detail that Congress abused him repeatedly. Congress had called Babasaheb Ambedkar ‘Rakshas’, ‘Rashtra Drohi’, ‘Dagabaaz Dost’…you will be shocked to hear. Even today we see how Congress abuses Veer Savarkar. Congress has abused stalwarts of this country,” he said.

“Looking at this I feel that Congress respects me like they did to Babasaheb Ambedkar, Veer Savarkar, as Congress is abusing me in a similar way. I feel it as a gift to me. Let the Congress abuse me, I will continue to work for the country and its people. With your (people) blessings all their abuses will get mixed in mud. Congress people understand, as much mud you sling at us, the lotus will bloom,” he added.

Appealing to people to bring in a stable, strong and full majority BJP government in Karnataka, Modi gave a new poll slogan for Karnataka ‘Ee baariya nirdhara, Bahumatada BJP Sarkara’ (This time the decision is, BJP government with a majority).

Karnataka needs a double engine BJP government, so that there is a coordination between the Centre and the state, there are no obstacles, infrastructure projects get completed at a fast pace, so that the confidence among foreign investors are strong, and also that Karnataka becomes growth engine of the country instead of becoming Congress’ ATM, he said.

Suggesting that the Karnataka election is not merely for making a government for five years, but it is to make the state “number one” in the country, the PM while listing various work under taken by BJP governments at both state and centre said, “To make Karnataka number one in the country, it is necessary for the double engine government to remain in the state. Double engine government means double benefit, double speed.” Accusing the Congress of dividing the country, and always indulging in appeasement politics, he said, Congress cannot understand the trouble of the poor as they haven’t seen the poverty. “Congress is a party that does politics in development…it is full of negativity.” Highlighting that Bidar’s ‘Bidri’ craft artist Shah Rasheed Ahmed Quadri was recently awarded with ‘ Padma Shri’, Modi accused Congress of disappointing him for decades.

BJP MLA calls Sonia Gandhi ‘Vish Kanya’

Bengaluru (IANS) | A day after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a ‘poisonous snake’, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA in Karnataka on Friday dubbed former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi as ‘Vish Kanya’. BJP MLA from Vijayapura constituency Basangowda Patil Yatnal asked Kharge, if PM Modi is poisonous snake, then Sonia Gandhi must be Vish Kanya? Being the president of the national party, Kharge does not know how to respect the Prime Minister.

Reacting to this, Karnataka unit Congress President D.K. Shivkumar said, no one knows what will happen to Yatnal if he uses such low level language. Shivakumar said, the Congress will not tolerate Yatnal’s remarks. BJP leaders should apologize for this. PM Modi and Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai should also apologize and Yatnal should be expelled from the party.

The Congress leader said that it is a bad habit of BJP leaders to make statements against the Nehru-Gandhi family. Our strength will be known on May 13, he said.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shobha Karandlaje and Karnataka Higher Education Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan has said that he does not agree with Yatnal’s statements.
