    Kolkata: Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhdeb Bhattacharjee on Saturday was admitted to the ICCU of the city-based hospital after he complained of a severe respiratory problem. He is 79-years-old.

    Sources close to him said that the the leader’s oxygen saturation level dropped to a great extent following which his condition deteriorated and he had to be admitted to the hospital. His wife Meera Bhattacharjee accompanied him on his way to hospital. Their daughter Suchetana Bhattacharjee has also reached the hospital.

    Bhattacharjee had been a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patient for quite some time.

    Sources said that his health condition had been deteriorating for the last few days. However, that time he refused to adhere to the doctor’s advice to get admitted to the hospital.Since afternoon, his condition started deteriorating and the oxygen saturation level was dropping fast. So, the team of doctors attending on him decided to get him admitted to the hospital without further delay.

    In 2021, the former chief minister was infected with COVID-19 and was admitted to the same hospital.

    He became the chief minister succeeding the nonagenarian leader Jyoti Basu in November 2000 and continued to be in the chair till 2021, when Mamata Banerjee- led Trinamool Congress came to power ending the 34- year Left Front rule in the state

    As chief minister, Bhattacharjee was vocal on the need of massive industrialisation in the state. However, the land acquisition matters during his tenure backfired for his party and the Left Front.

    Kolkata (IANS). The West Bengal State Election Commission (WBSEC) on Tuesday informed the Calcutta High Court that it has appointed two nodal officers for the panchayat elections to be held on Saturday.

    These two officers are Additional Director General (Law and Order) of West Bengal Police Javed Shamim and West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS)-cadre officer Amitabh Sengupta.

    The election body informed the court in the form of an affidavit.

    Shamim will play a key role in coordination with WBSEC regarding deployment of Central Armed Forces personnel for various election related work.

    At the same time, Sengupta will play the role of coordinator between the commission and the state government.

    On Monday, the WBSEC informed the court that the Union Home Ministry has confirmed the sending of 485 more companies of the Central Armed Forces for the upcoming elections.

    With this, the total strength of the central forces has increased to 822. 337 companies are already deployed.

    The ED has not found any direct evidence against Sayoni Ghosh involved in the school recruitment case. The probe agency is probing whether the proceeds of the alleged scam were invested in any business or property by Ghosh or his family members.

    The sources further said that expelled Youth Trinamool Congress leader Kuntal Ghosh is accused of investing the proceeds of the scam in properties and businesses.

    Earlier, the ED had tracked the information of Kuntal Ghosh giving a loan of Rs 40 lakh to Tollywood actor Boney Sengupta to buy a vehicle.

    Sengupta confessed this to the central agency and later returned the money to the ED.

    Sources said that the ED wanted to find out whether Sayoni Ghosh was also involved in such cases.

    On June 30, Sayoni Ghosh was questioned by the ED for 11 hours. According to agency sources, Sayoni Ghosh gave many contradictory answers to the questions.

The West Bengal government on Monday filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking withdrawal of its second Special Leave Petition (SLP) in the Municipal Corporation recruitment case, challenging the earlier order of a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court. And the central agency was directed to conduct the investigation.

    This is the second time that the state government has withdrawn its SLP in the apex court in the matter.

    The central inquiry into the matter was originally ordered by a single-judge bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court.

    Challenging the decision, the state government first approached the Supreme Court.

    However, the apex court referred the matter back to the Calcutta High Court. Following this, the state government approached a single-judge bench of Justice Amrita Sinha of the Calcutta High Court, which upheld Justice Gangopadhyay’s order and directed the central agencies to continue their investigation in the matter.

    Subsequently, the state government challenged Justice Sinha’s order before a division bench of the Calcutta High Court and also filed a parallel SLP in the Supreme Court in the matter.

    However, a division bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Partha Satathi Chatterjee expressed displeasure over the state government keeping multiple court options open in the matter. Following a rebuke from the Calcutta High Court, the state government withdrew the first SLP in the matter.

    On June 15, a division bench of the Calcutta High Court comprising Justice Chakraborty and Justice Chatterjee had upheld the first single-judge bench’s order on the probe by a central agency into the municipalities recruitment case.

    Thereafter, the state government filed a second SLP in the apex court against the order of the division bench of the Calcutta High Court.

    The state government on Monday filed an application in the apex court to withdraw the second SLP in the matter.

    Sources said soon after take-off, the chopper carrying the chief minister faced uncertain conditions due to overcast sky and strong wind accompanied by heavy rain.

    However, luckily at the same time the airbase of the armed forces came into their sight. He immediately contacted the airbase authorities and got the helicopter landed there. The landing was safe and none of the passengers were injured.

    Sources said the CBI had recently sent a communique seeking a special file from the WBSSC office. However, in its reply, the WBSSC office informed the CBI that the file was missing since last year.

    The commission further stated that it has also made a general diary entry in the local police station. However, the WBSSC has not informed the CBI whether the local police have launched an investigation into the missing file.

    The CBI recently questioned state education secretary Manish Jain twice in the recruitment case. Jain was asked whether any influential person used to influence the recruitment process of teaching and non-teaching staff in West Bengal.

    Sources said that special questions were also asked on the role of former state education minister Partha Chatterjee in this matter. Jain is also likely to be questioned on the role of Chatterjee’s executive assistant Sukanta Acharya in the matter. Chatterjee has been in judicial custody since July last year for his alleged involvement in the case.
