Fierce fire in IIT-Kharagpur, fear of destruction of documents

Kolkata (IANS). A major fire broke out in the Lal Bahadur Shastri common room of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur on Sunday, in which several important documents were gutted.

Sources in the institute said that the fire incident in the common room was noticed by the security personnel around 3 am when the students, researchers and staff were fast asleep.

Panic soon spread across the campus. The whole complex was covered with black smoke. However, no casualty or injury was reported till the filing of the report.

The local fire service station was immediately contacted. Fire tenders reached the spot and after several hours of hard work, the fire was brought under control.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. However, fire officials suspect that a short circuit may have been the cause of the fire.

The source of the fire is said to be a store room near the common room. However, questions are being raised about the fire prevention measures in this prestigious institute of technology of the country.

Earlier in March 2021, a similar fire broke out in IIT-Kharagpur. There were no reports of casualties or damage to property then.

  • Two girls got married in a traditional way in a temple

Two girls got married in a traditional way in a temple

Kolkata (IANS) | There is a debate going on in the country about gay rights. In such a situation, Kolkata is witnessing same sex marriages. Here two girls got married in a traditional way in a temple. Though Moushumi Dutta and Moumita Majumdar got married quietly at the Bhootnath temple on Sunday midnight, they later shared the news through social media.

The couple told the media that Dutta was already married and had two children. Dutta says that her husband used to beat her everyday, so she separated from her husband. I also have two children and their responsibility is mine.

The couple told that both of them (Moushumi Dutta and Moumita Mazumdar) came in contact with each other through social media. Later, when they decided to marry, Majumdar willingly accepted the children of his partner (Datta).

Currently, both of them are living in a rented accommodation in North Kolkata, and are aware of the developments regarding same-sex marriage. Dutta, expecting a favorable verdict from the Supreme Court, said whatever the outcome, she would always be with Mazumdar.

He claimed that even though the court does not allow the certificate of same-sex marriage, no rule prevents them from living together.

Even before this, many such marriages have taken place in Kolkata. Both Suchandra and Sree, who have been living happily together for years, are now popular faces of the LGBTQ rights movement in the city.

  • Fierce fire in Kolkata’s Salt Lake, dozens of shanties gutted

Fierce fire in Kolkata’s Salt Lake, dozens of shanties gutted

Kolkata (IANS) | A massive fire broke out in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area on Sunday evening, gutting around 60 shanties, rendering hundreds homeless. Officials said there was no report of any casualty. The fire in Falguni market could not be controlled till around 10 pm and 10 fire tenders were deployed to douse the fire. Panic spread in the area after gas cylinders kept in the slums exploded one after the other.

State Fire Service Minister Sujit Basu and Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation Mayor Krishna Chakraborty immediately rushed to the spot. Efforts were being made to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent housing complexes of slums, which have already been engulfed by the devastating fire.

Locals said that the slum in Falguni Bazar area where the fire broke out had more than 100 shanties and most of them were completely gutted in the fire. However, no casualty was reported in this case till the filing of the report. A fire official present at the spot said, “Those who were inside the shanties at the time of the fire have been evacuated safely.”

He said the narrow passage to the shanties created a major problem for fire brigade personnel to reach near the source of the fire.

Chakraborty said that the homeless people whose huts were completely gutted by the fire are currently given shelter in the local community hall. Food has also been provided to them, he said. Alternative arrangements and compensation will be arranged for them.
