    Sri Lanka issues landslide warning due to heavy rainfall

    COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s National Building Research Organization (NBRO) on Wednesday urged people to be cautious of possible landslides if heavy rain continues.

    In its latest warning, the NBRO said people in the southern district of Galle, Kandy and Kegalle in the central part of the country and Kurunegala in the North Western Province are asked to be alert, reports Xinhua news agency.

    The warning was issued as Sri Lanka experienced rainfall above 75 mm during the past 24 hours, according to the NBRO.

    The NBRO asked people to take precautions if they notice cracks on the ground, subsidence of the ground, slanting of trees, electricity posts, fences and telephone posts, and cracks on their walls.

    The Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology has forecast heavy rain in the island country accompanied by strong winds.

    Ecuador. At least seven have been killed after heavy rains caused a mudslide in southern Ecuador. In an initial statement on Monday, Ecuador’s Risk Management Secretariat (SNGR) said at least 16 people were killed and about 500 others were affected by a wave of mud and debris that swept through the small community of Alausi on Sunday night.

    Later in the day, however, the agency revised the number to seven people killed, 23 injured and 46 missing. It did not explain the reason for the revision, but noted that 32 people had been rescued. “We have had to witness a terrible tragedy,” Transport Minister Dario Herrera told the Reuters news agency in Alausi, located in central Ecuador about 317km (197 miles) south of the capital, Quito.

    “The first thing is to attend to and evacuate people from the houses,” Herrera said.

    Landslide on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, vehicular movement closed

    Jammu, The Jammu-Srinagar Srinagar national highway is also closed for vehicular movement from both sides today (Tuesday). The highway was closed yesterday (Monday) following a landslide near Ramban.

    According to the traffic department, the highway is expected to open by this afternoon. Vehicles are stranded in Jammu and Udhampur due to the closure of the highway. A traffic police officer said that no vehicle from Jammu is allowed to go beyond TCP Nagrota.
