    Two students of the Delhi University, Anjali and Abhigyan said that they were confined inside their flat by Delhi Police ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the university.

    The students are the cadres of the All India Student’s Association (AISA).

    ‘Not about Modi’s glory…’: PM jibes at Oppn over boycott call for Parliament inauguration

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his return after a six-day tour across three countries, took a dig at Opposition parties including Congress over their call to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament.

    The PM, on Thursday, was addressing people who had gathered to welcome him outside the Palam airport on his return after holding meetings with leaders in Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia.

    He noted that not only Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and that country’s ruling party functionaries but a former prime minister and opposition members were present as well during the Indian community’s programme in Sydney where he had spoken.

    In a veiled attack on the Opposition, Modi stated that it was the atmosphere of democracy where everyone joined in the Indian community’s programme, lauding their show of “democratic soul and strength”.

    “Everyone accorded respect to the Indian representative, and it was not about Modi’s glory but about India’s strength,” he added.

    19 opposition political parties, including the Congress, have announced a boycott of the ceremony on May 28, demanding that President Droupadi Murmu and not Modi do the inauguration.

    Karnataka polls: ECI issues advisory to parties on print advertisements

    In view of complaints regarding “unverified” claims in political advertisements, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has asked all political parties and candidates to get “clearance” from the media certification and monitoring committee (MCMC) before publishing any advertisement in the print media on the date of polling and a day prior.

    “No political party or candidate or any other organization or person shall publish any advertisement in the print media on poll day and one day prior to poll day unless the contents of political advertisement are got pre-certified by them from the MCMC committee at the State/District level, as the case may be,” a letter to the political parties dated May 7 said.

    ECI on Sunday also held all major local newspapers in the state responsible for all matters including advertisements published in their newspapers.

    Citing the Press Council of India’s norms for journalistic conduct, the ECI, in a letter said, “An editor shall be responsible for all matters, including advertisements, published in the newspaper. If responsibility is disclaimed, this shall be explicitly stated beforehand.”

    Pratapgarh: Lovelesh Tiwari, one of the accused in the murders of gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, is active on the social media despite being lodged in the Pratapgarh jail.

    The Banda police are said to have taken serious cognisance of the contents posted on Tiwari’s social media accounts over the last two weeks.

    The posts are inflammatory and hateful in nature, according to the police.

    One of the accounts with the name “Maharaj Lovelesh Tiwari ChuChu” has been locked.

    SP Banda Abhinandan said the police were trying to look for the person handling Tiwari’s social media accounts.

    “We have started an investigation. This is serious,” he said.

    Wrestlers claim Delhi Police cut electricity supply at Jantar Mantar

    Ace wrestler Bajrang Punia, in a late-night video message has said that Delhi Police have disconnected the electricity and water supply at the Jantar Mantar protest site.

    “See this is the pressure on Delhi Police even as the whole country is standing with us,” Punia, a Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist, added on Friday through Instagram.

    According to Punia, the Delhi Police have disconnected the electricity supply, erected barricades around the protest area, and are preventing access to food and water.

    He also said that the Delhi Police have lodged two FIRs and demanded that the wrestlers stop their protest.

    Earlier on Friday, the police had informed the Supreme Court that they will register an FIR and on late Friday evening finally registered two FIRs allegedly against the Wrestling Federation of India coaches and its President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, in connection with the sexual harassment allegations made by women wrestlers.

    Some of India’s top wrestlers, including Olympic medallists Punia and Sakshi Malik, along with Asian and Commonwealth Games medallist Vinesh Phogat are protesting at the Jantar Mantar, seeking action against Singh for alleged sexual harassment of women grapplers.

    Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), New Delhi, Pranav Tayal, said that in the matter of complaints received from female wrestlers, two FIRs have been registered in Connaught Place police station.

    In his mid-40s, the engineer was among the first batch of 360 Indian nationals who returned home under India’s ‘Operation Kaveri’ evacuation mission.

    Singh, a native of Faridabad in Haryana, recalled his ordeal in Sudan and said he was “still very scared”.

    Moga: In a major breakthrough amid the continuing manhunt, ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh was arrested by Punjab Police from the Moga district of Punjab, informed sources.

    Earlier on Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah when asked about Amritpal Singh’s arrest and that he has been absconding for a long, said, “It may happen sometime. Earlier he used to roam freely, but now he cannot carry on with his activities.”

    Two more aides of the fugitive radical preacher and Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh were arrested at Mohali in Punjab, in a joint operation by Punjab and Delhi Police on April 18.
    On April 15, Punjab Police arrested his close aide Joga Singh from Sirhind in the Fatehgarh Sahib district.

    Another close aid of the pro khalistani leader, Papalpreet Singh was arrested on April 10, in an operation conducted by Punjab Police and its counter-intelligence unit.

    The radical leader had been declared a “fugitive” while he was on a run earlier in March.

    “Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh has been declared a fugitive. His two cars were seized and gunmen nabbed. We also checked if the firearms of his security escorts had been procured legally. A case has been registered. Punjab Police have launched a manhunt for Amritpal Singh and we are hopeful that he will be arrested soon. A total of 78 people have been arrested so far and further searches and raids are underway,” Chahal said in an exclusive interview with ANI.

    Plea in SC for independent committee probe into killings of Atiq, Ashraf

    New Delhi: A day after gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead under police escort, a plea was filed in the Supreme Court on Sunday seeking the constitution of an independent expert committee headed by a former apex court judge to probe the killings.

    The plea, filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, also sought an inquiry into the 183 encounters that have taken place in Uttar Pradesh since 2017.

    Ahmad (60) and Ashraf, who were in handcuffs, were shot dead by three men posing as journalists when they were answering reporters’ queries while being escorted by police personnel to a medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj for a checkup on Saturday night.
    Just hours before the shooting, the last rites of Ahmad’s son Asad, who along with one of his associates was gunned down in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, were held.

    Uttar Pradesh Police had said on Friday that it has gunned down 183 alleged criminals in encounters in the six years of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led government and this included Asad and his accomplice.

    Satya Pal Malik, the last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir who oversaw heightened times that include the abrogation of Article 370, stated in an interview that the Prime Minister squelched him by saying “tum abhi chup raho” when he as governor reported that the Centre’s own mistakes were to blame for the Pulwama massacre.

    Malik also said that the Prime Minister is ‘ill-informed’ and ‘does not hate corruption very much’ in an interview with journalist Karan Thapar for The Wire news portal that was posted on Friday night.

    Malik mentioned the bombing of the CRPF convoy in Pulwama in February 2019 which claimed the lives of 40 jawans and was turned into an election issue by the BJP in the interview.

    “CRPF members requested an aircraft to transport their members because such a sizable convoy seldom travels by road. They enquired the home ministry. They refused to give. They only required 5 aircraft, but they weren’t provided with any,” Malik said.

    Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit Hyderabad today, where he is scheduled to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for projects worth over Rs 11,300 crore in Telangana. During his two-hour visit, he will also address a public meeting at Parade Grounds in Secunderabad.

    As per the itinerary, Modi will reach Begumpet Airport at 11.30 a.m. and then head to Secunderabad Railway Station to flag off the Secunderabad-Tirupati Vande Bharat Express. The new train is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities by almost three and a half hours and will be particularly beneficial for pilgrims.

    After the flag-off ceremony, the Prime Minister will attend a public meeting at Parade Grounds, where he will lay the foundation stone for new blocks at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bibinagar. He will also lay the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Secunderabad Railway Station, which is being taken up at a cost of Rs 720 crore. The revamped station will have world-class amenities and an aesthetically designed iconic building. It will feature a double-level spacious roof plaza with all passenger amenities in one place, as well as multimodal connectivity for seamless transfer of passengers from rail to other modes of transport.

    Furthermore, the Prime Minister will flag off 13 new Multi-Modal Transport Service (MMTS) services in the suburban section of Hyderabad-Secunderabad twin city region, providing commuters with a fast, convenient, and comfortable travel option. He will also dedicate to the nation the doubling and electrification of the Secunderabad-Mahabubnagar project, stretching over 85 km, completed at a cost of nearly Rs 1,410 crore. The project will provide seamless connectivity and assist in enhancing the average speed of trains.

    During the program, he will also lay the foundation stone for five National Highway projects worth more than Rs 7,850 crore. These road projects will strengthen the road connectivity of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

    After spending an hour at the public function at Parade Ground, the Prime Minister will leave for Chennai from Begumpet Airport at 1.20 p.m.
