UK-India Week 2023 Kick-starts In London With Young Leaders Forum

BJP Tamil Nadu state president K Annamalai, singer-songwriter Armaan Malik, London Deputy Mayor for Business Rajesh Agrawal and prominent entrepreneurs and professionals from India and the UK came together for a Young Leaders Forum in London, which kick-started UK-India Week 2023.

The annual event, organised by UK-headquartered India Global Forum (IGF) to bring together senior ministers, policymakers and business chiefs to explore bilateral ties across all spheres of collaboration over the course of six days, opened with the theme of “Empowering Future Changemakers” on Saturday.

The student-led gathering at the Nehru Centre in London covered topics ranging from Western media perceptions of Indian democracy and prospects of dual citizenship for the Indian diaspora to employment opportunities in an artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. “Democracy is heavily intertwined in our DNA,” said Annamalai, in response to a question about perceptions of Indian democracy in the West.

“Indian politics operates in an Indian way, to evaluate with a Western lens will naturally fail… If anyone wants to protest in India, they can block a highway for nine months. That is how deep our democracy is. We allow our protesters to do that, even Britain does not,” he said. “If someone thinks dual citizenship isn’t possible, I’ll say wait for another few years. We are open to listening to you, we will listen to you,” said the BJP leader, in response to another question. Singer-songwriter Armaan Malik, behind several chart-toppers in Bollywood, was asked about the role he sees AI playing in his field.

“I think we are at a stage in music where we really don’t know what all AI has in store… I just feel like it shouldn’t replace the whole art of songwriting,” said the singer. Fellow singer-songwriter and entrepreneur Ananya Birla, daughter of prominent Indian industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, spoke of her motivation behind setting up a microfinance initiative.

“Having an impact on this world beyond the economic gain is important to the youth… I felt guilty that my family that had money could access money easily from banks, but people who really needed money couldn’t access it because they didn’t have physical collateral,” said the founder of Svatantra Microfin, which provides microfinance to women entrepreneurs in rural India. Designed to bring together the next generation of leaders and youth leaders, the Forum also heard from the Indore-born Deputy Mayor of London who shared his journey as a fintech entrepreneur in the “greatest city in the world”.

“As Deputy Mayor, I want to strengthen the relationship between our two great nations, the UK and India, through what Prime Minister Modi describes as the living bridge community. When I first took over this role seven years ago, India was the fourth-largest investor in London, and last year, India was the largest investor in London,” said Rajesh Agrawal.

The Forum also marked the launch of a new Young Leaders Fellowship Programme open to students to gain work experience within the UK-India corridor. “The future belongs to those who are determined to make a difference, and this fellowship serves as a stepping-stone for our youngsters to become catalysts of progress,” said Professor Manoj Ladwa, Founder & Chair of India Global Forum.

On Monday, the UK-India Week will centre around Opposition Labour Party Leader Keir Starmer setting out his party’s vision for the bilateral relationship, followed by a UK-India Infrastructure Summit hosted by the Lord Mayor of London Alderman Nicholas Lyons on Tuesday.

Indian student seen on CCTV carrying woman to rape her sentenced in UK

London: A 20-year-old Indian student, who was captured on CCTV carrying a woman home to rape her last June, has been sentenced for more than six years, police said.

Preet Vikal was seen in the footage carrying the “intoxicated” woman in his arms and across his shoulders along King Edward VII Avenue and North Road, the South Wales Police said on Friday.

He continued to carry the victim to a property in the North Road area where he raped her during the early hours of June 4, 2022.

Vikal, who had met the woman while she was on a night out with friends in the city on June 3, admitted rape, and was sentenced to six years and nine months in a young offenders’ institution.

Detective Constable Nick Woodland from South Wales Police said: “Stranger attacks such as these are extremely unusual in Cardiff but in Preet Vikal we had a dangerous individual”.

“He took advantage of an intoxicated and vulnerable young woman who became separated from her friends,” Woodland said.

Officers carried out an extensive trawl of CCTV and it was this footage, along with an Instagram message exchange with the victim, that led to Vikal being identified and arrested.

He will serve two thirds of the sentence in custody and the remainder on licence.

The victim read a statement at Vikal’s sentencing and said she did not want to go on nights out for five months after the rape.

“It was really difficult to pretend I was okay when I wasn’t,” the victim was quoted as saying in The Sun.

He also took a “trophy photograph” of her on his bed, The Sun report said, adding that the victim remembered waking up naked next to Vikal but did not know where she was or that she had been raped.

She reported about Vikal on the same day to the police and he was arrested.

“We hope the sentencing brings some sense of closure and allows the woman to regain her confidence and move on with her life,” Detective Constable Woodland said.

Imran Khan’s aide Babar Awan departs for London amid chaos in party

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Imran Khan’s close aide, Babar Awan, on Friday, departed for London amid ongoing unrest within the party, reported Geo News.

Several prominent leaders decided to part ways with PTI and said they are leaving politics. However, Babar Awan defended himself and added by saying that his visit to London was “pre-planned”.

The Islamabad High Court on Thursday ordered the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Ejaz Chaudhry declaring his arrest under MPO (Maintenance of Public Order) as unlawful.

The decision came immediately after Asad Umar, the secretary general of PTI, was released from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Wednesday. However, shortly after leaving the jail, he held a press conference at the National Press Club and announced his resignation from all party positions, reported Geo News.

Awan is a close aide and legal advisor of the PTI chairman. His family sources, according to Geo News, said that Awan’s London trip was already scheduled, adding that he would return soon.

Clarifying his visit, Awan said in a tweet, stating he is away due to personal obligations. “All of my medicines are Pakistani and [I receive] treatment by Pakistani doctors,” he added. Around eight people were killed and many were injured as a result of the days-long protests sparked by Khan’s arrest from the Islamabad High Court in the Al-Qadir Trust case, and the government blocked internet services to ensure law and order.

Khan’s party has felt the heat of the state’s might since his detention on May 9 — a day the army dubbed “Black Day” — when his party workers burned and wrecked military installations, including the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, according to Geo News.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday this week announced his resignation from the party saying he has decided “to take a break from politics.” “In my earlier statement where I unequivocally condemned the 9th May incidents, I have decided to take a break from politics, therefore, I have resigned from the party position and parting ways with Imran Khan,” tweeted Fawad Chaudhry.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shireen Mazari also announced her decision to quit PTI and politics recently.

Mazari’s announcement came after incidents in Pakistan on May 9 and 10 which she strongly condemned. She announced, “From today onwards, I am no longer a part of PTI or any political party.” Shireen Mazari expressed her commitment to her children and her mother and stressed that they are her top priority at this time, ARY News reported.

Shireen Mazari has been arrested multiple times since the May 9 incidents. After the court ordered her release, She was taken away in a Vigo without a number plate, Dawn reported. Mazari was presented by the police in court in a case related to inciting party supporters in Kharian on May 9.

According to Geo News, several leaders of Imran Khan’s party and thousands of workers have been detained in connection with the violent rallies. The army has demanded that those participating in attacks on military installations face prosecution under the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secrets Act.

Delhi. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has reached London. He will attend the coronation ceremony of King Charles III on behalf of the Government of India.

Explain that on May 2, British High Commissioner Alexander Ellis met Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar to discuss preparations for the coronation ceremony of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey. “It’s an honor to meet the Vice President before attending the coronation,” the British High Commissioner tweeted. She added that this is an important occasion and an opportunity to further deepen UK-India ties.

The coronation of King Charles III will take place on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey in London. The event will mark almost seven decades since the last coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. According to the royal family, on the morning of the coronation, King Charles III and Camilla will travel in the Diamond Jubilee State Coach from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey in the King’s Procession. It was built in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.

World leaders gather in London for King Charles’ coronation

LONDON: King Charles will hold a reception on Friday for world leaders gathered in London for his coronation this weekend, the biggest ceremonial event to be staged in Britain for 70 years.

Charles, 74, and his wife Camilla will be crowned at London’s Westminster Abbey in a glittering but solemn religious ceremony with traditions dating back some 1,000 years, followed by a procession, resplendent with pomp and pageantry.

Royal fans have been gathering on The Mall, the grand boulevard that leads to Buckingham Palace, and heads of state and global dignitaries have been arriving in the British capital ahead of Saturday’s event.

“It’s an honor to represent the United States for this historic moment and celebrate the special relationship between our countries,” U.S. first lady Jill Biden said on Twitter before leaving for Britain.

She will be among the world leaders attending the reception at Buckingham Palace on Friday evening which the king and queen will host along with other senior members of the royal family.

Earlier, Charles will hold a meeting of leaders from the Commonwealth of Nations, the voluntary associations of 56 countries which he also heads, while he will also greet prime ministers and royal representatives from the 14 other realms where he is head of state, including Australia and Canada.

The leaders of Australia and New Zealand will pledge their allegiance to King Charles at his coronation on Saturday even though both are life-long republicans who do not shy away from making their positions clear.

Across Britain, preparations are underway for the first coronation since 1953 when his mother Queen Elizabeth was crowned. The king has even voiced announcements for the London underground network, reminding passengers to “mind the gap”.

Charles automatically became king after the queen’s death at 96 last September but the coronation, although not essential, is regarded as a hugely symbolic moment which legitimises the monarch in a public way.

Set against the backdrop of a cost of living crisis, some public scepticism and in a modern era when questions are being posed about the future of the institution, its role and finances, Saturday’s event will be on a smaller scale than the previous one 70 years ago.

Nonetheless it will be a lavish occasion. The St Edward’s Crown, which weighs about 2.2 kg (4 lb 12 ounces) and dates back to 1661 and the reign of his namesake King Charles II, will be placed on his head during the ceremony.

    BEJEWELLED

Among the other historic, bejewelled items involved will be the golden Sovereign’s Sceptre with Cross which holds the 530 carat Cullinan 1 diamond, also known as the Star of Africa and the world’s largest colourless cut diamond.

After the ceremony, there will be a mile-long procession involving some 4,000 military personnel, with the newly-crowned King Charles III and Queen Camilla returning to Buckingham Palace in the four-tonne Gold State Coach, pulled by eight horses.

Thousands are expected to line the route and millions more will watch on giant screens erected at 30 locations around Britain or at home, with the event set to be broadcast live around the world.

Retailers are hoping for a boost from the three days of celebrations and street parties with the public enjoying an extra holiday on Monday. Buckingham Palace said it expected it would provide an economic lift for Britain’s struggling economy.

Supermarket Lidl said it had sold enough bunting to line the procession route 75 times over, and Tesco said it expected to sell enough bunting to stretch from Land’s End in southwest England to the tip of Scotland. Sainsbury’s said its sales of sparkling wines were up 128% year-on-year.

But polls suggest far from everyone will be celebrating with a majority of the public generally apathetic about the event, and critics have questioned the cost at a time when many people are struggling to pay bills.

“They just take everything from me. They never do a day’s work,” said Philip Nash, 68, as he swept the streets in Whitechapel, a more run down area of east London.

Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs feature on Royal Mail stamp marking King’s coronation

    By IANS
    LONDON:
A stamp depicting Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims and their places of worship feature on one of the four stamps issued by the Royal Mail to mark the coronation of King Charles III on May 6.

Captioned “Diversity and Community”, the stamp reflects a multi-faith community and the cultural diversity of contemporary British society, a news release stated.

The stamp features figures representing the Jewish, Islamic, Christian, Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist religions and is representative of all faiths and none.

“The background shows aspects of both rural and urban Britain and includes some of the many different places of worship that are found around the United Kingdom,” the release noted.

Presented in a miniature sheet, the stamps illustrate the Coronation ceremony and the traditional street party, as well as some of the causes His Majesty has dedicated his years of public service to.

This includes cultural diversity and community, the global ties of the Commonwealth, which he now leads, and sustainability and biodiversity.

This is only the third time in history that Royal Mail has issued stamps to mark a Coronation. The previous two occasions were for King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

“Royal Mail is proud to issue this set of commemorative stamps which celebrate the Coronation, and some of the causes which His Majesty has championed throughout his many years of public service,” Simon Thompson, Chief Executive of Royal Mail, said. “This is only the third time we have issued Coronation stamps and I am delighted that they mark the start of a new reign and a new chapter in our history,” Thompson added.

The stamps were designed by Atelier Works and feature newly commissioned wood engravings by British artist Andrew Davidson.

Royal Mail will also be applying a special postmark to stamped mail to mark the event. The postmark will run from April 28 until May 10.
