Monsoon Arrives In Delhi 2 Days Early, Brings Mercury Down To 29 Degrees Celsius
The monsoon arrived in the national capital on Sunday, two days before its scheduled onset, bringing respite to Delhiites from scorching heat, even as a woman died due to electrocution amid rainfall.
The rains which started early morning brought the maximum temperature down to 29 degrees Celsius, eight notches below normal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, logged 48.3 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Sunday, it said.
The rainfall also led to waterlogging and traffic congestion in some parts of the city. On Sunday, the southwest monsoon covered both Delhi and Mumbai together for the first time since June 21, 1961, the IMD said. While it hit the national capital two days before schedule, its entry into the financial capital is two weeks late, the Met office said.

Meanwhile, the Safdarjung Observatory recorded 2.4 mm rainfall, Palam 7.1 mm, Lodhi Road 1.7 mm, Ridge 7.4 mm and Ayanagar recorded 4 mm rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Sunday.
The Met office termed the monsoon activity over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi as “vigorous”.
According to the IMD, monsoon activity is considered “vigorous” if the recorded rainfall is more than four times the normal or it is fairly widespread.
In a related incident, a 34-year-old woman died of electrocution after accidentally coming in contact with a live wire at the New Delhi railway station complex on Sunday morning amid rainfall which also led to waterlogging there.
According to traffic police, due to rain, a branch of a tree fell on the road in Plaza Market, Vasundhra Enclave leading to obstruction in traffic movement for a brief period.
According to data shared by the central control room of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, due to the monsoon, several trees were uprooted in Janakpuri, Swaroop Nagar and Trilokpuri, while waterlogging was reported from Timarpur in Civil Lines, Janakpuri, Firni Road, Friends Colony, and Railway Colony.
Waterlogging was also witnessed in parts of Karol Bagh, Najafgarh, Sainik Farm and Dwarka, according to the data.
Meanwhile, a balcony shared by two adjacent shops in southwest Delhi’s R K Puram area also collapsed. However, no one was injured in the incident as the shops were closed, a police officer said.
On Sunday, the minimum temperature settled at 23.1 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal, the IMD said.
The relative humidity oscillated between 73 per cent and 100 per cent, it said.

Bleak monsoon predicted in India over next four weeks
Private forecasting agency Skymet Weather Monday predicted a bleak monsoon in India over the next four weeks, raising concerns about the impact on agriculture.
“Extended Range Prediction System (ERPS) is projecting a dismal outlook for the next four weeks, until July 6. Agriculture heartland is looking rather cracked and parched. This coincides with the crucial time of sowing or at least preparing the field, with the hope of impending rains,” it said.
The central and western parts of India, which form the core monsoon zone, may face challenges in coping with the drying effects due to inadequate rainfall early in the season, Skymet Weather said.
The southwest monsoon reached Kerala on June 8, a week after the usual date of June 1.
Cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea first delayed the monsoon onset over Kerala and is now impeding the advance of the rain-bearing system, preventing it from reaching the interior regions of the peninsula, the private agency said.
While monsoon rains usually cover Maharashtra, Odisha, and half of Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar by June 15, the monsoon stream is still grappling to settle over these areas.
At present, the visible manifestation of monsoon surge is limited to the northeast and the west coast. Unfortunately, there are no signs of weather systems emerging over the Bay of Bengal in the near future, which are crucial drivers of the monsoon.

Monsoon will reach Kerala on June 4
New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday predicted that the southwest monsoon is likely to set in on Kerala around June 4. As per the IMD, there is no possibility of the arrival of monsoon before June 1.
“Once the monsoon gets strong, it is likely to arrive in Kerala around June 4, 2023,” said IMD in its updated long-range forecast outlook for the 2023 Southwest monsoon Season (June – September) rainfall and monthly rainfall and temperature for June 2023.
The IMD further informed that there is no cyclone probability in the Arabian Sea for next week. “If rainfall distribution is almost similar everywhere, then it will be an ideal situation. There won’t be any problem. If we get equal distribution everywhere, there won’t be much impact on agriculture. In northwest India, as of now, below-normal rainfall will be there,” according to the IMD.
As per the IMD, below-normal monthly rainfall is expected over most parts of the country except in some areas of south peninsular India, northwest India, extreme north India, and some isolated pockets of northeast India, where above-normal rainfall is expected in June.
However, the southwest monsoon seasonal (June to September) rainfall over the country is most likely to be normal (96 to 104% of Long Period Average (LPA).
Quantitatively, the southwest monsoon seasonal (June to September) rainfall over the country is likely to be 96% of the LPA with a model error of ± 4%, said the IMD.
Barring the northwestern region, India is set to receive normal rainfall this monsoon season despite the El Nino phenomenon which is set to return after a three-year hiatus, the weather office said on Friday.
However, most parts of the country will witness deficient showers in June, except some pockets in peninsular regions such as south Karnataka and northern Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Ladakh, the India Meteorological Department said in its update of the long range forecast for the season.
The weather office said the warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean has begun and there was a 90 per cent probability of development of the El Nino phenomenon, which is known to affect monsoon rains in India.
However, a positive Indian Ocean Dipole is likely to develop during the monsoon season which would offset the adverse impact of the El Nino and bring rains to most parts of the country.
