Not joining third front: Naveen Patnaik after meeting PM Modi

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik made it clear on Thursday that he is not going to join the third front or a common political platform of non-BJP parties.

Patnaik also said that the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will go solo in the next Assembly elections and the Lok Sabha polls, both scheduled next year.

The Chief Minister told this to mediapersons after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Thursday afternoon.

Patnaik-led BJD has been maintaining equal distance from both the BJP and the Congress. So, when reporters asked him if there is any possibility of BJD joining the third front, the CM replied, “No… Not as far as I am concerned… Not now.”

On his meeting with PM Modi, Patnaik said they discussed issues related to Odisha’s demands, not any political matter.

“Our discussion was mainly related to the demands of Odisha. I spoke to the Prime Minister about the proposed Jagannath International Airport in Puri for which the boundary has already been earmarked,” he said.

“We want an expansion as the Bhubaneswar airport is witnessing too much traffic. The Prime Minister said that he will definitely help in every possible way,” the Chief Minister said.

Patnaik also ruled out any meeting with other political leaders during his trip to Delhi.

Patnaik ruling out joining the third front assumes significance after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met him on Wednesday. He had also held talks with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in March.

Following the break-up of the BJD-BJP coalition government in 2009, the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD has been maintaining equal distance from both the BJP and the Congress. Also, the BJD has not shown much interest to get involved in national politics. The regional party maintains that its focus is on the interests of Odisha and its people.

CM Nitish will meet Naveen Patnaik for opposition unity

Patna (IANS) | After visiting Delhi, Kolkata and Lucknow in an effort to unite the opposition ahead of next year’s Lok Sabha elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is now set to travel to Bhubaneswar for a meeting with Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik. He said that the date of the meeting has not been decided yet.
The buzz on Wednesday was that Nitish Kumar would meet Patnaik in Odisha on May 5 (Friday).
I have very good relations with him (Naveen Patnaik), Kumar told reporters. I will talk to him about opposition unity. The date of the meeting is not fixed yet.
Earlier on April 11, the Bihar Chief Minister had met Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Aam Aadmi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal, CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury and CPI’s D. Raja.
He also met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on 24 April.
All the leaders welcomed his initiative.
I have no personal ambition for any post, Nitish Kumar said after attending a government function here. I am just trying for opposition unity. Today, BJP is trying to change the history of the country. So, we have to unite and teach them a lesson.
Responding to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s statement on laborers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Kumar said, “People of the country are watching everything he is saying.” He will give them a befitting reply.
Pramod Sawant had earlier said that 90 per cent of crimes in Goa are due to migrant laborers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
When asked about the ban on Bajrang Dal, Nitish Kumar said that when all the opposition leaders sit together, we will discuss the issue. When our government will come to the center, we will make a strategy for this. At the moment, I have nothing to say on this.

  • Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Reviews Preparedness For Possible Cyclone ‘Mocha’

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Reviews Preparedness For Possible Cyclone ‘Mocha’

Bhubaneswar: In view of the possible formation of cyclone ‘Mocha’ over the Bay of Bengal, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting to review preparedness.

Recalling cyclone ‘Fani’ of 2019, the Chiev Minister said it is difficult to accurately determine the path of cyclones formed during summer season. Therefore, the admiistration should remain prepared to deal with any situation, he said.

The Chief Minister directed the officials and departments concerned to remain in a state of readiness to tackle any kind of eventuality. NDRF, ODRAF and Fire Services personnel should also be prepared.

Emphasising that every life is previous, Naveen also advised the officials to take steps for shifting of people residing in low-lying and vulnerable areas to cyclone shelters, if necessary.

The Chief Minister also directed them to chalk out plans in advance for relief and restoration works in the aftermath of cyclone.

The CM also directed the Chief Secretary to review the situation regularly and asked the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) to work in coordination with all departments.

Chief Secretary Pradip Kumar Jena said all efforts will be made to ensure zero casualty during the calamity. All Collectors have been alerted in this regard. Around 1000 cyclone shelters are ready, while more safe places, including school buildings have been identified, he said.

Giving details of preparedness, SRC Satyabrata Sahu said round-the-clock control rooms have been set up after holding discussion with Collectors of 18 districts. As many as 17 NDRF and 20 ODRAF teams have been kept ready for the possible cyclone, he said.

Though summer cyclones are always unpredictable, there is no need to panic as all necessary steps are being taken to deal with any situation.

In the past, several cyclones have been formed over the Bay of Bengal including Fani in 2019, Amphan in 2020 and Yaas in 2021. State-level and district-level control rooms have been set up and the situation is being closely monitored even though no cyclone forecast has been issued by IMD so far, he said.

It may be noted here that a low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal around May 7, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Though the IMD was yet to predict whether the low pressure area will intensify into a cyclonic storm or not, international meteorologist Jason Nicholls has forecast that the system may intensify into a cyclone and impact areas between eastern India and Myanmar.

A precise prediction regarding the path and intensity of the system can be made after formation of the low pressure area, weather experts opined. The system will be called cyclone ‘Mocha’ if it becomes a cyclonic storm.

  • Babus Have Replaced Naveen Patnaik As Odisha CM: Dharmendra Pradhan

Babus Have Replaced Naveen Patnaik As Odisha CM: Dharmendra Pradhan

Bhubaneswar: Babus (bureaucrats) are ruling the roost in Odisha and from news reports, it appears that they have even replaced Naveen Patnaik as Chief Minister of the state,” Union Minister and senior BJP leader Dharmendra Pradhan told mediapersons here on Friday.

“And influential ministers of the state can be seen carrying umbrellas for them,” he quipped.

Dharmendra also blamed the local administration for the violence and arson in Sambalpur during Human Jayanti procession earlier this month. “The government’s inefficiency and governance deficit led to such an untoward incident during the traditional bike rally before the Hanuman Jayanti celebration in the western Odisha town. A tribal youth was also killed on April 14. The police action leaves a lot to be desired. It is a concerted attempt by the state to target the Hindu community,” he alleged.

The Union Minister further claimed that local administration did not cooperate with National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) Member Ananta Nayak, who visited the violence-hit Sambalpur on April 26 but failed to meet the family members of the deceased. “She has now sent a fact-finding team to the state and I am thankful to her for doing so,” he said.

“Maintaining peace does not mean torturing the majority community and threatening them with false cases. The Odisha government should follow Raj Dharma (duty of a ruler) and not discriminate people on basis of religion and caste,” he added.

Meanwhile, BJP national president JP Nadda has formed a four-member team to look into the incidents of violence during Hanuman Jayanti celebrations in Sambalpur.
