We will take legal action after inquiry in due course of time,” said Dependra Pathak, Special CP, Law and Order.

Wrestler Sakshi Malik said that they were peacefully protesting and did not break any barricades.Farmers stage sit-in
Scores of farmers led by BKU leader Rakesh Tikait too were on Sunday stopped by the Delhi Police at the Ghazipur border as they tried to enter the national capital to take part in the protest called by agitating wrestlers outside the new Parliament building.

“All others (farmers) have been stopped (by the police). We will sit here for now and decide what to do next,” Tikait, who had spearheaded the anti-farm law protests, said after being stopped by the police at the heavily fortified Ghazipur border.

Police rounded up some farmers on GT Road near Gurudwara Manji Sahib in Ambala on Sunday when they insisted on marching towards Delhi. A spokesperson of BKU (Charuni) Sukhwinder Singh alleged that police detained some of the farmers late on Saturday night.

Around 200 farmers, including women activists, have been camping in Gurudwara Manji Sahib in Ambala since Saturday night which led to heavy deployment of police force outside the Gurudwara road.

Ambala’s Superintendent of Police Jashandeep Singh said no permission has been given to hold the “Mahila Maha Panchayat” in Delhi. The police officer reached the gurudwara and asked the farmers not to lake the law in their hands and disperse.

    JNU students’ claims
Moreover, a section of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students on Sunday alleged that the varsity authorities “prevented” them from taking part in the ‘Mahila Maha Panchayat’ by ramping up security on campus.

There was heavy police deployment on the campus, the students added. No immediate response was available from the police or the university. The All India Students’ Association (AISA) claimed that an “undeclared Section 144” has been imposed on the campus.

“Today, the Mahila Panchayat was announced. Heavy police deployment has been made inside and outside Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to prevent students from participating in it. The government has deployed its entire machinery to protect sexual violence accused,” said AISA activist Madhurima Kundu said.

The protesting wrestlers said late on Saturday evening that there was a lot of “pressure” to call off the Mahila Mahapanchayat they have planned in front of the new Parliament building on Sunday, but they will go ahead with the “peaceful” march come what may.

The agitating wrestlers, demanding the arrest of former Wrestling Federation of India president Brij Bhushan Singh who they alleged sexually harassed several women grapplers, had given a call for a Mahila Mahapanchayat on Sunday, the day the new Parliament building will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The administration has given them the permission to take out the march from Jantar Mantar to the new Parliament building.

“We will go ahead with the Mahila Mahapanchayat, come what may. Our supporters have been stopped at a gurudwara in Ambala where they were supposed to stay tonight. It has now been converted into a cantonment,” alleged Vinesh.

The wrestlers, in the run-up to the Mahapanchayat, have toured several cities in north India urging womenfolk and khaps to lend their support to their protest.

Vinesh added that even if force is used on them on Sunday, the march will remain peaceful.

“Wherever we are stopped, we will sit there and have the Mahapanchayat.”

She alleged that raids were being conducted at the houses of people supporting them.

Police deployed in Haryana to ‘prevent’ entry of protesters into Delhi

Kamal says make new Parliament inauguration an occasion of national unity

CHENNAI: Insisting that political disagreements could wait for a day, actor-politician Kamal Hassan on Saturday appealed to political parties to reconsider their boycott and make the inauguration of the new Parliament an occasion of national unity.

India’s new home needs all its family members to reside in it, he said. He said he believed in participatory democracy and hence call upon all opposition parties who have chosen to boycott the event to reconsider it.

“Any disagreements you may have over the event can be raised in public forums as well as on the floor of the houses of the new Parliament,” Hassan urged.

Reminding political parties to remember that “there is more that unites us than divides us,” Haasan said in a statement here that the entire country is looking forward to this event. “The eyes of the world are upon us. Let’s make the inauguration of a new Parliament an occasion of national unity, our political disagreements can wait for a day,” Hassan, president of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), said.

The veteran actor had unsuccessfully contested against BJP Mahila Morcha national president Vanathi Srinivasan in Coimbatore south constituency in the 2021 Assembly elections.

The inauguration of the new Parliament on May 28 is a moment of celebration for the entire country and it moved him with immense pride. “I congratulate the Government of India for this historic achievement. In national interest, I choose to celebrate the inauguration of the new Parliament with you, while maintaining my dissent over not inviting the Hon. President of India and for not involving opposition parties in the planning of the inauguration,” he said.

“But this moment of national pride has become politically divisive. “I ask my Prime Minister one simple question; “Please tell the country, why the President of India should not attend the inauguration of our new Parliament?” I see no reason why the President of India as Head of the State should not be part of this historic occasion,” he asked.

Bills passed by Parliament become law of the land only when the President gave the assent. The President has the power to convene or adjourn sessions of Parliament and is integral to the functioning of Parliament.

“I advise the Prime Minister to make the conciliatory gesture and invite Hon. President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu. The new Parliament is no mere ordinary building. It will be the home of Indian democracy for time immemorial. I call upon the Prime Minister to rectify this oversight, which will go down in history as a grave error, and if rectified will become a milestone in political leadership,” he claimed.

PM Modi will be inaugurating the new Parliament building — a triangular-shaped four-storey building with a built-up area of 64,500 square metres. The Congress has called the new Parliament building as Modi’s vanity project. Earlier, Congress General secretary Jairam Ramesh also took a swipe at the government and said, “A complete insult to all our Founding Fathers and Mothers. A total rejection of Gandhi, Nehru, Patel, Bose, et al. A blatant repudiation of Dr. Ambedkar.”

Ramesh also slammed the Prime Minister two days ago and said, “The sole architect, designer and worker for the new Parliament building, which he will inaugurate on May 28th. The picture tells it all – personal vanity project.”

The triangular shaped building’s construction started on January 15, 2021 and was to be completed by August 2022. Built in an area of 64,500 square metres, the new building will house 1,224 MPs and is a four-storey structure. It has a library, multiple committee rooms and dining rooms. Tata Projects has constructed the building at an estimated cost of Rs 970 crore.
