Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today opened the air ticketing to Singapore and Bangkok facilitating people of Odisha travelling to these south-east Asian cities at a fair price.

With this, Odisha is now a pioneer and first in the country to support and commence the international air connectivity in the interest of the public.

Indigo airlines will commence direct international flights to Singapore as well as Bangkok from 3rd June, 2023. Earlier, direct flights ticketing was launched by the Chief Minister to Dubai which will start from May 15.

He said that it is a momentous occasion for all of us today as Indigo opens ticketing to Singapore & Bangkok from Bhubaneswar. Recently, I had also inaugurated the ticketing to Dubai. With this, Odisha is now connected to the top cosmopolitan Asian cities– opening a whole new world of opportunities for our people.

He further said that in last few years, the aviation traffic in Odisha has seen immense growth. Though the domestic flight connectivity has seen a noticeable improvement, Odisha Government has come forward to make sizeable contribution to ensure direct international flight connectivity between Bhubaneswar and world-class destinations to meet the people’s aspirations, he added.

He hoped that these international flights would provide tourists more convenience and affordable travel options while also encouraging trade and tourism.

He thanked the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India and Indigo Airlines for the support.

Principal Secretary, Commerce and Transport Smt Usha Padhee presented the welcome address.

It may be recalled here that in the current year budget, Govt. of Odisha has made the budget of Rs. 100 crore to support the viability gap funding. Due to such support, international travelling has become affordable for every passenger travelling from Odisha. It is to inform that, online reservations for Indigo’s initial flights from Bhubaneswar to Dubai have received an incredibly encouraging response. These flights are beginning from 15th May, 2023.

Singapore and Bangkok will be the threshold to the entire south-eastern Asian region while connectivity to Dubai will open the gateway to the Gulf, Europe, and Western countries making world tour accessible, convenient & affordable for the people of Odisha. It is well recognised that aviation sector has a multiplier effect on the local economy and growth. International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) study shows that the air connectivity has an economic multiplier of 3.1 and employment multiplier of 6.1.

Odisha is endowed with natural resources and forestry. The state capital is just 2 to 2.5 hours flying distant from all major cities of the country. Odisha’s progressive governance driven by a stable government over the past two decades has been advantageous for the people’s aspirations. The state’s rich legacy on maritime trade and cultural exchange are reflected in several societies and geographies globally. The state’s GSDP is steadily growing faster than the national GDP. Lately, the HappyPlus survey has assessed Odisha as the 3rd Happiest State in India. Additionally, the Odia diaspora in the Gulf countries and East Asian countries are flourishing.

The delegation which includes the Minister of Industries, MSME, and Energy, the Chief Secretary to the Government of Odisha, Principal Secretary, Industries Department, Principal Secretary, E&IT Department, Secretary to CM, Secretary, Sports and Youth Services, and Managing Director, IPICO, met today stalwarts from the field of IT & ITES, Skilling and logistics and shipping lines. In line with the huge potential that the state offers in the field of IT and ITeS, the Fuji Soft Group has proposed to open a “Centre of Excellence” in the state capital of Bhubaneswar. Buoyed by the steady supply of software engineers and skilled workforce in the above sector, Bhubaneswar has been a happy hunting ground for all the marquee labels who are already present in the state. With Fuji Soft proposing to open the proposed CoE, it will add the required fillip to the already burgeoning field.

Keeping in focus the skill development initiatives of the state, NITKAL (Nihon-UTKAL) has tied up with OUTR (Odisha University of Technology & Research) to set up a dedicated skill development centre in the state to cater to the huge demand for trained work force in Japan. NITKAL (Nihon-UTKAL) is also continuing its dialogue with IIIT for establishing a dedicated Japan centric centre for skill development in the relevant field.

Logistics and storage for the new sunrise sector of Green Hydrogen and Green Ammonia continues to attract a large amount of traction. Keeping in lines with these modern initiatives, 2 of the stalwarts in its field, met the high-level delegation led by the Chief Minister.

First off, the block NYK Lines (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha) evinced keen interest in setting up dedicated shipping lines, starting from the port-of-call Paradeep/Gopalpur/Dhamra to transport out the Green Ammonia to the countries which are committed to the greening of the said sector, especially the south east Asia right up to Japan. They were briefed by the high-level delegation about our existing port infrastructure and the future development prospects.

Sumitomo Corporation a global fortune 500 company met the delegation and evinced interest for creating tankage and storage facilities for the green hydrogen and green ammonia sector. They are zeroing in at Gopalpur, which, with its, SEZ located just next door, happens to be an ideal location for the same.

The Chief Minister instructed all the officials to create a roadmap for all these investments in the sunrise sector and create time lines to achieve a quick turnaround for all the proposals received.

The visit of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to Japan continues to buttress the commitment of the state government to promote Odisha as a favourable investment destination and strengthen the emerging economic and cultural ties with Japan. Odisha CM writes to Gadkari, seeks NH 55 completion

BHUBANESWAR: Concerned over the inordinate delay in the completion of the Cuttack-Angul-Sambalpur section of NH 55, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has sought the intervention of Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for early completion of the important highway project.

Writing a letter to the Union minister, he said, it is a matter of great concern that the rehabilitation and upgradation of the 265-km highway to a four-lane carriageway being carried out by NHAI since 2017 is yet to be completed even after more than five years.

“NH 55 serves as a lifeline to millions of people of western Odisha. Haphazard construction activities and the miserable plight of the road causes frequent accidents leading to the loss of human lives. As many as 399 accidents have taken place causing 196 fatalities during the last two years. There is public agitation and discontentment among people for inordinate delay in completion of the road work,” Naveen pointed out.

The chief minister said the concern of the state government on this count has been communicated to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways earlier and despite regular review of the progress of the project with the regional authorities of NHAI, no satisfactory outcome is visible. He urged Gadkari to intervene in the matter for early completion of the project, which will go a long way in redressing the pending demand of people of the state.

On March 6, The New Indian Express had published a detailed report titled ‘From Cuttack to Sambalpur, the unending NH 55 pain’ highlighting the factors behind inordinate delay in completion of the highway expansion work. Two senior NHAI officials, including a project director (technical), were suspended over irregularities and tardy progress of the construction work.

One of the most significant highways of Odisha, the NH 55 has long been a crucial connection between coastal, central and western regions of the state. Completed, the highway would link industrial corridors with the ports by providing an uninterrupted connectivity and accelerating movement of mining and industrial traffic.

Started in three phases between March 2017 and March 2018 at a cost of Rs 2,367 crore, the project is incomplete due to delay in completion of bridges, vehicle underpasses (VUPs) and animal underpasses (AUPs). The project estimate has almost doubled at Rs 4,482 crore after five years but only about 60 per cent work has been completed so far.

The project taken up on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode was delayed as the construction agency Hyderabad-based Gayatri Projects Ltd went into a severe financial crisis a year after it bagged the contracts.
