    Nor’wester Havoc: Odisha SRC Seeks Damage Report, Directs Restoration Of Power Supply

    Bhubaneswar: With thunderstorm accompanied by gusty wind and rain bringing in large scale damage in several districts of Odisha on Thursday, the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has sought reports from the affected districts.

    According to sources, the gusty surface wind along with lightning and rain uprooted trees and snapped the branches at many places in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Pipili, Puri and Athgarh in the afternoon. It also plunged several areas into darkness as high tension wires snapped causing disruption in power supply.

    Several kutcha and asbestos houses were damaged in Cuttack, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Sundargarh, Sambalpur and Dhenkanal districts, the sources said.

    Following the reports of damage and disruption in power supply due to the nor’wester rain, the SRC directed the affected districts to liaise with DISCOMS for immediate power restoration.

    It told the district collectors to take the help of local fire services for removal of uprooted trees and broken tree branches. The SRC also sought report on damages to houses and any casualties/injury if any due to thunderstorm or lightning on the day.

    BALANGIR: A youth died and another sustained critical injuries after being stabbed by a group of miscreants on the main road near Narasingha temple in Balangir town in the wee hours on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as 26-year-old Saroj Panigrahi of Getsarobarpada and the injured is Prem Sahu (25) of Barapalipada. The incident took place at around 3.30 am, just 200 metres away from Balangir Town police station.

    Sources said Saroj and Prem were waiting near Narasingha temple to go home after attending cultural programmes during Sital Sasthi Yatra when a group of youths arrived at the spot and started to hurl expletives at them. The duo resisted and a heated argument broke out between them.

    During the squabble, one of the miscreants stabbed Saroj in the chest. Prem tried to come to the rescue of his friend but he too was stabbed. Soon after, the miscreants fled the scene. On being informed by passersby, police reached the spot and rushed the injured duo to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital.

    However, Saroj succumbed to his injuries. Prem was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition.
    While family members of Saroj demanded strong action against the culprits, a sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Balangir Tofan Bag said the crime has been recorded in the CCTV camera installed in the area.
    “A case was registered in this connection and police have formed a special team to nab the miscreants involved in the incident. Raids are being conducted and the culprits will be arrested soon,” the SDPO added.

    Mother, step father convicted for murder of minor girl in Odisha’s Balasore

    Balasore: A Court in Balasore convicted the biological mother and stepfather of a minor girl in Balasore of Odisha on Thursday and awarded them life imprisonment. The Court also ordered both of them to pay a fine of Rs 5000 each and in case the fine amount is not paid, they shall have to undergo six months of additional jail term.

    The accused persons convicted today have been identified as Baby Biwi and Abdul Rahim.

    As per reports, in a shocking incident, the biological mother of the girl and her second husband killed the 13-year-old girl in 2022. Later, the deceased girl’s biological father Sheikh Qutbuddin lodged a complaint on 28, June 2022 about the murder at the Town Police Station in Balasore.

    Accordingly, the case was under trial in the Court. Today, the Court issued the order in this matter and convicted the couple with life imprisonment. On behalf of the State of Odisha, Public Prosecutor Pranab Kumar Panda was conducting the case.

    Bhubaneswar: Odisha is reeling under the intense heat wave conditions with temperatures rising above 30 degrees form 9AM in the morning in most places. The Meteorological Department has warned that the heat wave conditions will prevail across the state for five more days.

    Due to the heat wave, the maximum day temperature might rise above 42 degrees in most parts of Western Odisha. Meanwhile, the temperature in coastal areas of the state will remain above 40 degrees.

    The MeT has predicted that there will be no major changes in the next three days. Yesterday, the temperature in 25 cities in the state was recorded above 40 degrees. Nuapada was the hottest place of teh state with a temperature of 44 degrees Celsius.

    Some parts of the South and interior Odisha will likely receive heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours. Yellow warning has been issued to 11 districts today for lightning and thunder.

    Meteorologists has predicted that the temperature will drop due to pre-monsoon in the coastal areas of Kerala and Karnataka this week. However, the temperature will likely not drop for Odisha and other states of the country before June 10.

    Woman ward member trampled by elephant in Odisha!

    Bansapal: A woman ward member has been trampled to death by an elephant in Keonjhar district of Odisha on Thursday, said reliable reports.

    The tragic incident has been reported from Banbiharipur village of Telkoi forest under Bimala Forest Division in Keonjhar.

    The dead woman has been identified Draupadi Naik, the wife of Dwitikrishna Naik of the same village. She is also a ward member of the nearby panchayat, said reports. When she went to pick mangoes from the nearby mango tree, the elephant trampled her.

    The elephant attacked Draupadi and escaped. After some time, the family members rescued her and brought her to Telkoi Medical Center.

    At the medical center the doctor declared her brought dead. However, after this incident the forest department has given a Rs. 60,000 compensation to the family of the deceased in the first phase. It is reported that, a 15-year-old elephant is found to be living in Banbiharipur area under Keonjhar forest division.

    Hanging body of youth found in Vani Vihar University, Odisha!

    Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, students of Vani Vihar University spotted the hanging body of a youth in the early morning hours of Thursday.

    According to reliable reports, the dead body of the youth was recovered from the premises of the Vani Vihar University campus. The dead body was recovered in a hanging condition.

    The Shaheed Nagar police immediately reached the spot. The deceased has been identified. The name of the deceased is Uttam Nayak alias Kalia. He is said to be 21 years old.

    The youth is a resident of Dandamukundapur area in Pipili block under Puri district limits in Odisha. He used to live with his family inside the campus of Vani Vihar University in Bhubaneswar.

    It is worth mentioning that, Uttam used to work as a daily labourer. Kalia’s father however has told sources that his son was at home last night. But, he was baffled as to how and when he went out of the house and hung himself from the tree.

    Further the deceased’s father has alleged that someone had murdered Kalia and hanged him. The Saheed Nagar police are investigating into the matter and are searching for evidence whether the death is a murder or a suicide.

    Rayagada: On the basis of reliable information, a team of STF conducted a raid in the afternoon on Rayagada – Koraput National Highway No. 326.

    According to reports, the raid took place near Siriguda Swargadham square of Rayagada town in Rayagada district.

    The raid was conducted regarding dealing and possession of wildlife products by wildlife criminals. As a result of the raid one wildlife criminal identified as Dambrudhar Majhi, the son of Hati Majhi of Naktiguda, Hundibora (Hundibar) of Tikiri police station under Rayagada district was apprehended.

    During the search three numbers of Leopard Skin and other incriminating materials were recovered from his possession. The accused person Dambrudhar could not produce any authority in support of possession of such Leopard Skins.

    The poacher has been arrested and will be forwarded to the Court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrates (SDJM), Rayagada. In this connection Special Task Force (STF) Case under Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 was registered.

    The skin will be sent to the Director Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun for biological examination. The investigation in this connection is still underway.

    Bhubaneswar: Most parts of Odisha are facing a heatwave-like situation for almost a week. On Thursday Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur were boiling at 39.2°C at 11:30 am.

    It is worth mentioning that Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur were the hottest places in Odisha on Thursday, said the Official Twitter handle of Meteorological Centre situated here in Bhubaneswar.

    However, the residents of Jharsuguda were a bit relieved from the reeling heat since the district recorded 38.4°C.

    The Meteorological Department has warned that the heat wave conditions will prevail across the state for five more days.

    Odisha Plus 2 admission to start from May 29, classes from July 29

    Bhubaneswar: The process of the Odisha Plus 2 admissions will begin soon informed the Higher Education Department of Odisha.

    The online application process for Odisha Plus 2 admissions will commence through the Student Academic Management System (SAMS) portal on May 29, 2023.

    It is worth mentioning that the last date for submission of application for Odisha Plus 2 admissions is June 20.

    Furthermore, the first merit list is to be published on June 28, 2023 Higher Education Department of Odisha.

    The department further said that the classes of Odisha Plus 2 will commence on July 29, 2023.

    In keeping with the high pass percentage of students who have passed in Odisha Matric exams this year, the number of Plus 2 seats has also been increased.

    The School and Mass Education Department of the Government of Odisha has decided to upgrade schools in various districts of the State and increase the number of Plus 2 seats.

    The Department has published an official notification in this regard. It has prepared an exhaustive list of the schools that have been upgraded and posted it on twitter.

    Two including police officer killed, ASI injured in an accident in Odisha’s Boudh

    Boudh: In an unfortunate incident, two people including a police officer was killed and other two were injured on Wednesday after a Bolero collided head-on with a truck in Boudh district of Odisha. The accident took place near Kamalpur chaak.

    According to reports, a team of Baunsuni police of Boudh district was returning from Cuttack to Baunsuni after completing a rescue operation when a truck coming from the direction of Sonepur collided with the bolero they were riding in. After the collision, the bolero turned turned on the spot. The deceased home guard has been identified as Jagannath Meher.

    A police home guard and the bolero driver were killed on the spot in the accident while an ASI and another home guard sustained critical injuries.

    The injured cops have been admitted in the Boudh hospital for treatment. More details awaited.
