    Low pressure area likely to be formed, Odisha to receive heavy rainfall for 5 days

    Bhubaneswar: The latest bulletin of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) revealed that a low pressure area likely to be formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts.

    The weather department also issued orange and yellow warning for heavy rainfall warnings for Odisha for the next five days.

    Valid from 8.3O AM of 25.06.2023:

    Orange Warning: heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Dhenkanal and Cuttack.
    Yellow Warning: Heavy rainfall (7 to 11 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Angul, Deogarh, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Boudh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri.
    Valid from 8.3O AM of 25.06.2023 upto 8.3O AM of 26.06.2023:

    Odisha: Ex-RI convicted in Vigilance case, awarded rigorous imprisonment

    Kalahandi: Ishwari Prasad Purohit, the Ex-RI (Retirerd) of Boden Circle under Dharmagarh Tahasil of Kalahandi, who was charge sheeted by Odisha Vigilance in a case vide Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhawanipatna, was convicted by the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Bhawanipatna today and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of two and half years.

    Apart from awarding Purohit the jail term, the court directed him to pay fine of Rs.10,000 and in default of payment of fine, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 3 months for offence U/s 7 PC Act, 1988.

    The Court further sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period three and half years and to pay fine of Rs 10,000 and in default of payment of fine, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 3 months for the offence U/s 13(2) r/w 13 (1) (d) of PC Act, 1988. Both the sentences are to run concurrently.

    It is to be noted here that the Vigilance had arrested Ishwari Prasad Purohit under the section of 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d)/7 PC Act, 1988/109 of the IPC for demanding and accepting bribe Rs 8,000 from a complainant for issuance of RoR (Patta) in a mutation case in his favour.

    Today, the convict has been forwarded to jail custody, said source adding that the Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of Purohit following his conviction.

    B.K. Naik, DSP, Vigilance, Koraput Division had investigated the case and A.K. Sahu, Spl. P.P. Vigilance, Bhawanipatna and P.K. Dora, Additional Special Public Persecution, Vigilance, Berhampur jointly conducted the case on behalf of the prosecution.

    Odisha’s cyclist Kalpana Jena bags silver medal in Germany

    Bhubaneswar: Cyclist Kalpana Jena has brought lures for Odisha and the country by winning the Silver medal in the 2 km Time Trial event at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2023 being held in Berlin of Germany.

    Kalpana clinched the second spot by clocking 5:42.42, while another Indian Shivani won the Gold medal with a timing of 5:22.41. Ana Zumbado of Costa Rica bagged the Bronze. She finished the race with a time of 5:46.63.

    Kalpana is a native of Regedapada village in Athagarh block of Cuttack district. She is the daughter of Gadadhar Jena and Gitanjali Jena, who work as agricultural farm labourers.

    According to reports, due to poverty her father could not arrange a cycle for her daughter. And thus, Kalpana continued her practice by lending cycles from her friends.

    After making a niche for herself as an avid cyclist, Kalpana became an achiever in the district level. Later, she also exhibited her skill in other States and won hearts of the nominators.

    After knowing about the achievement of Kalpana, Athagarh MLA Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain presented a new racing cycle to her.

    Meanwhile, Kalpana gave the credit of her success to the villagers along with mentor Bibekananda sir, her parents and the Athagarh MLA.

    Odisha: Nabarangpur Sub-collector under vigilance scanner in DA case

    Nabarangpur: The Sub-collector of Nabarangpur district is under Odisha vigilance scanner for allegation of acquiring disproportionate assets.

    The accused has been identified as Prashant Raut, Sub-Collector of Nabarngpur district.

    Simultaneous raid is underway at various places including Bhadrak and Kanan Vihar area of Bhubaneswar. Nine teams of Odisha vigilance are conducting raids  led by two Additional SP, seven DSPs, eight inspectors and other staff on the strength of search warrants issued by  Special Judge, Vigilance.

    Places of search:
    (1) The double storied residential house of of S.O. located at HIG-115, Kanan Vihar, Bhubaneswar.

    (2) The residential house of S.O. located at Nawarangpur, Dist- Nawarangpur.

    (3) The office chamber of S. O. located at Nawarangpur, Dist-Nawarangpur.

    (4) The parental house of S.O. located at Village-Bahudarada, PS-Bhadrak, Dist-Bhadrak.

    This apart, searches are being conducted at 5 other locations of acquaintances of  Rout.

    Odisha: Helper’s body dismembers due to accident in Keonjhar

    Keonjhar: In a tragic incident, a man’s body dismembered into multiple pieces after two trucks collided with each other in Odisha’s Keonjhar district. The accident occurred at the By Pass road near Keonjhar city.

    According to reports, the driver slept while driving, due to which the truck they were travelling in had a head-on collision with another truck. Due to the accident, the helper’s body dismembered into pieces.

    On being informed, police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it for autopsy. The cops have also started to probe into the matter.

    Odisha: 4 inter-state buses fined for not having HSRP, Checking underway

    Bhubaneswar: In the safe city drive, four buses from states other than Odisha were fined for not having  High Security Registration Plate (HSRP).

    The Odisha State Transport Authority (STA) has started imposing hefty fines through a special drive from June 23.

    “As on June 7, 2023, a total of 40,93,608 vehicle owners have booked slot, out of which HSRP has been affixed in 35,87,577 vehicles. Owners of vehicles are advised to affix HSRP at the earliest to avoid penalty,” Lalmohan Sethi, the Additional Commissioner of Enforcement of the STA said.

    In a press note, L.M. Sethi, Addl. Commissioner Transport, Enforcement informed , in case the vehicle is not affixed with HSRP within the scheduled date, e-challan shall be issued against the offending vehicle and attract fine of Rs. 5000/- or Rs.10, 000/- under Section 192 of M.V. Act, 1988 as the case may be.”

    The State Transport Authority, Odisha (STA) has issued a challan against 2674 vehicles
    in last 11 days (01.02.23-11.02.23) which do not have high-security registration plates (HSRP)
    and color-coded stickers. In accordance with the directives of the Supreme Court of India, Central Government amended Rule 50 of CMVR and Notifications/Statutory Orders from Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH),Govt. of India, State Transport department has made affixation of HSRP mandatory since 01.06.22 for all class of old vehicles which are registered prior to 01.04.19.

    Notably, the deadline for affixation of High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) on old vehicles registered prior to April 1, 2019, carrying Odisha Registration Mark, ended on February 28, 2023.

    Odisha vigilance unearths over Rs 3cr from Nabarangpur additional sub-collector

    Nabarangpur: Odisha vigilance detected huge cash of more than Rs three crore during a raid on the properties of additional sub-collector on Friday.

    On the strength of search warrant issued by special judge, vigilance, Sundargarh, vigilance teams have been conducting simultaneous raids on the properties of Nabarangpur additional sub-collector Prasanta Kumar Rout at nine locations, said M. Radhakrishna, vigilance Superintendent of Police (SP).

    Till now, the vigilance officials recovered cash of Rs 2.25 crore from the Bhubaneswar residence of Rout while another Rs 77 lakh were recovered from his Nowrangpur residence, he said.

    Further search operation is going on and details will be shared in a later stage, the SP said.

    The raid is being conducted at his two-storey house in Kanan Vihar, Bhubaneswar; his residence and office in Nabarangpur and his ancestral home in Bhadrak.

    The vigilance team is also conducting raids at the house of his relatives and close relatives at five other locations, vigilance officials said.

    2 minor girls die of snake bite in Odisha’s Boudh district

    Boudh: In a tragic incident as many as two minor girls died of snake bite in Boudh district of Odisha on Friday. The incident took place in the Gouribengas village under Bargan Panchayat in Kantamal Block of the district.

    The deceased girls have been identified as Saurindri Nayak and Jharana Bhoi of Gouribengas.

    As per reports, the two minor girls worked in the Kendu leaves Collection Centre (Patra phadi) and slept there. When they were sleeping a poisonous snake bit them in the night.

    Later the two girls were admitted to Kantamal hospital in a critical condition. However, the doctors declared them dead.

    Earlier in March, a woman died after being bitten by a snake in Odisha’s Ganjam district today. Identified as Saraswati Pradhan of Badapada village under Bhanjanagar Police station limits, she had gone to the forest for some work and got bitten by a poisonous snake when she was returning.

    Odisha: School in Bahanaga used as makeshift mortuary post train accident reopens

    Balasore: The Bahanaga school, which was used as makeshift mortuary during triple train tragedy in Odisha’s Balasore district, reopened on Wednesday following completion of summer vacation.

    The 65-year-old school is just 500 metres from the accident site. The school was hastily turned into a temporary morgue, following the deadly train accident that claimed the lives of 292 people and injured over 1,000.

    The school having classes from 1 to 10 was reopened after conducting a puja in a new classroom. While the mid-day meal serving hall, which was turned as mortuary, was demolished, the classrooms were coloured to give a fresh environment to the students.

    However, the first day of the school witnessed a poor attendance. Out of over 550 students, about 200 students attended the school. May be the parents of the students are getting nervous about sending their children back to the building.

    “Students are still nervous to come to the school as such a huge number of bodies were preserved in their school. We have tried to convince the students and also their parents,” said a woman member of the School Management Committee.

    Balasore District Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde and District Education Officer (DEO) Bishnu Charan Sutar visited the school to monitor the situation.

    “As per the instructions of the School and Mass Education secretary, I am visiting different schools on the first day of reopening. So, I visited the Bahanaga school too,” said Shinde.

    DEO Bishnu Sutar said students are very much encouraged to attend classroom teaching.

    In the absence of half of the students, Sutar said, “Many of the students are residing on the opposite side of the railway tracks (accident site). The tracks were sealed. We hope the school will bounce back to its normal attendance when the situation normalises.”

    The collector also informed that he had spoken to the Divisional Railway Manager to allow the students to attend the school putting their work on hold during school timing.

    Notably, the Odisha government has decided to redevelop Bahanaga High School as a model school. Considering children’s mental health, a decision was taken to demolish the primary and elementary schools in the vicinity of the High School and reconstruct a completely new building with modern facilities.

    Former Odisha Sarpanch Run Over By Car, Dies

    Berhampur: Former sarpanch Lalit Mohan Mohapatra was killed after allegedly being run over by car at Khamari village under Digapahandi block in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Tuesday night.

    Family members have lodge complaint at K Nuagaon police station, alleging murder.

    According to sources, Lalit had an altercation with a youth last evening. He soon left the place in his motorcycle. The youth, however, followed him in his car and allegedly ran the vehicle over him between village school and Panchayat office. Lalita fell of his bike and sustained grievous injuries. The youth then rushed him to Digapahandi hospital in his car and fled thereafter.

    The former sarapanch, however, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.
