Odisha train crash: Kendrapara survivors live to tell the horrific tale

KENDRAPARA: Three persons including a minor of Tunga village under Kendrapara’s Aul block have been some of the lucky few to survive the horrific train mishap at Bahanaga that took the lives of 288 people.
Narrating the harrowing experience, 62-year-old Kailash Parida said he along with his daughter Anuja (30) and grandson Araba (5) had boarded the ill-fated Coromandel Express from Kolkata and was on way to Chennai as Anuja’s husband Janmejaya worked there.

“We were travelling in the B-5 coach. The train was moving at a very high speed when we experienced a sudden jolt and our compartment turned upside-down, throwing all of us from our seats. Before we realised what happened, the entire area turned dark and smoky. While my daughter suffered head injuries, my grandson and I were safe. With the help of locals, we managed to crawl out of the overturned bogie,” he added.

Anuja said it all happened in a flash. “Some passengers of our compartment died while many sustained grievous injuries. We saw bodies strewn across the tracks. Though we survived, the trauma will remain inside me forever. After this incident, I would avoid going to distant places via train,” she added.

Odisha train crash: Bengal Teens shared name and tragic fate

BHUBANESWAR: They were in their early 20s and the best buddies in their village. They even shared the same name- Suman Roy. But little did they know they would meet the same fate and leave for the heavenly abode the same day. The two young men from West Bengal’s Arazi Lalchandpur village bordering Bangladesh were among 288 people who lost their lives in the tragic train crash at Bahanaga.

The youth were among five migrant labourers from their village heading for Chennai to work at a construction site. While the body of one Suman has already been identified and dispatched to his native place, the relatives of the other has arrived at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar to identify the body. Three others, who were injured, have been discharged from hospitals.

“We have already identified the body from the photographs displayed near the help desk. But we are unable to find it as the number on the photo and the token number provided to us to receive the body from the stored container is not matching. We are verifying it again with the records available,” said Suman’s brother Jeet Kumar Roy.

“The two friends had boarded the train from Howrah. This was their first journey as migrant labourers to the South Indian city. As some labourers from our village, already working in Chennai, had assured their work, they sounded happy as they were going to earn for the first time. Everything is shattered now,” said Jeet.

Arazi Lalchandpur village in Dakshin Dinajpur district has a population of around 800 and more than 200 among of them work as migrant labourers in different cities across the country. Like the two Sumans, several migrant labourers from West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha who had boarded the general compartment of the Coromandel Express have been killed in the train crash.

“Suman was the only bread earner of the family. He was working as a daily wager back home and as his earning was insufficient to manage the family, he decided to move to Chennai for better income. He is survived by his parents and two other younger siblings. How will they survive,” asked Pradut Roy, his cousin.

Odisha Train Crash: Families Giving DNA Samples For Identification Of Decomposed Bodies

Bhubaneswar: Four days after the triple train accident at Bahanaga in Odisha’s Balasore district, the process of identification of the bodies of people who were killed in the mishap continued on Tuesday.

The horrific three-way mishap which took place on the evening of June 2 has claimed the lives of at least 278 people and left more than 1100 passengers. However, identification of the bodies has turned out to be a big challenge.

Stating that a total of 193 bodies were brought to Odisha capital, Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Prateek Singh said over 90 bodies have so far been identified and 85 of these handed over to the relatives so far.

He said that a help desk together with a 24-hour control room has been opened with the photographs of the unidentified passengers. Officials of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Commissionerate Police are present there to help the relatives of the affected passengers.

As some of the bodies have been decomposed, those are not matching with the photos causing problems for the family members to identify. When the claimants are trying to identify the body on the basis of clothes and markings, confusion is being created.

In case of multiple claimants and dispute over identification, DNA test is being conducted for proper identification of the body, the DCP said.

A DNA testing centre has been opened at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar for identification of the passengers who died in the triple train accident.

Several families have given DNA samples to avoid confusion in the identification of the bodies. After getting the reports of DNA tests, bodies will be handed over to their respective families.

Vehicles, ambulances and buses have been arranged for the family, relatives and friends of those who died in the triple train crash, Singh added.
