    Odisha: Coromandel Express Derails At Balasore, At Least 179 Injured And 50 Feared Dead

    At least 179 were injured and around 50 others were feared dead after Coromandel Express train derailed in Odisha’s Balasore on Friday evening.

    The Coromandel Express train derailed and several coaches fell on the track running parallel to it. A train on that track then crashed into the derailed coaches of the Coromandel Express. The accident took place near Bahanaga Station in Odisha’s Balasore.

    Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena said on Twitter that least 179 injured persons have been sent for treatment so far.

    Jena said on Twitter that 47 injured persons had been shifted to Medical College, Balasore and 132 were injured shifted to Soro CHC, Gopalpur CHC, and Khantapada PHC.

    The accident happened around 7.20 pm near Bahanaga Bazar station.

    The Coromandel Express was on the way to Chennai Central station from Shalimar station near Kolkata, said officials.

    In a video shared by ANI, Railway Spokesperson Amitabh Sharma said that 10-12 coaches of the Coromandel Express derailed.

    “Around 7 pm, 10-12 coaches of 2841 Coromandel Express derailed near Baleshwar, which runs from Shalimar-Howrah to Chennai, and infringed the track on opposite direction. Shortly [train number] 2864, which goes from Yashwantpur to Howrah, dashed [into the derailed coaches] on their infringed track. Three-four coaches of this train were derailed,” said Sharma in the video shared by ANI.

    Krithivasan is assuming the role of CEO and MD of TCS at a time IT companies are facing global macroeconomic headwinds and a slowdown in growth. He joined TCS in 1989 and worked across delivery, sales, client management and business in leadership roles.

    Before taking charge of this role, Krithivasan was President and Global Head of the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) Business Group at TCS. In FY23, TCS’ BFSI sector grew by 11.8% and TCS generated $27.9 billion in revenues with over 6 lakh employees across 50 countries.

    K Krithivasan has been with TCS for close to 34 years. He completed his BE in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Madras and a Master’s Degree in Industrial and Management Engineering from IIT Kanpur.

    Meanwhile, TCS asks its employees to work from the office for at least three days a week. Since March 2020, due to a pandemic, a majority of IT employees are working from home.

    In a statement, TCS said, “Over the last several months we have been encouraging associates in India to return to office and spend 3 days a week at the workplace. This has yielded good results with many of our people returning to office. Our objective is to have all associates work from office for at least 3 days a week on average in the month, and towards the same, we continue working with all our groups to have everyone participate.”

    Odisha to release millet landraces saved by tribals

    BHUBANESWAR: The Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment department has developed a standard operating procedure (SOP) for recognition, evaluation and release of traditional varieties of millets through seed system for landraces under Odisha Millet Mission (OMM).

    The system was developed in consultation with ICAR, OUAT, technical experts, field NGO partners and tribal farmers who are the custodian of the local varieties. In addition, standard scientific parameters such as yield, climate resilience, pest tolerance, cultural preference and taste were also considered during the development of guidelines. As part of the process, documentation of landraces was undertaken through crop diversity blocks, conservation in farmer fields, mapping of farmer preferences, development of seed standards from farmer point of view.

    As part of the process, 163 millet landraces have been identified of which 14 have shown good potential, said Agriculture department principal secretary Arabinda Padhee. Millets such as ‘Kundra Bati’, ‘Laxmipur Kalia’, ‘Malyabanta Mami’ and ‘Gupteshwar Bharati’, are being considered for release under seed system for landraces.

    “The state government has now formally approved formation of the landrace varietal release committee to release traditional millet landraces conserved by tribal custodian farmers. Last three years have been spent in conducting rigorous trials to get the necessary scientific data. By combining scientific rigour and traditional wisdom, the seed system for landraces initiative has created paradigm shift in mainstreaming agrobiodiversity,” said Padhee.

    Stating Odisha will be the first state in the country to release traditional millet landraces, he said the Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations is also keen to partner with Odisha on seed system for landraces and take the learnings to other countries of the world. The National Rural Livelihood Mission has also recently written to different state governments to adopt process of crop diversity blocks and mapping of landraces approaches. This apart, the National Rainfed Area Authority under the Agriculture Ministry is keen to collaborate and learn from the Odisha Millets Mission, he added.

    CUTTACK: Three days have passed since the first tragedy of a businessman drowning in the Taladanda canal due to lack of safety measures at the project site followed by the death of a girl at a box drain work site the next day, but the loss of precious lives seems to have failed to move the civic administration or the executing agencies into corrective action.

    Nothing has changed at the construction sites of the different developmental projects across Cuttack City which continue to pose life risks to the citizens without any semblance of safety measures. The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC)’s facile order to the agencies and departments to comply with the safety SOP has had no effect as the work sites on Thursday remained as dangerous as earlier.

    The New Indian Express reporter on Thursday visited the box drain project being carried out by the drainage division of Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) at Professorpada and witnessed the state-of-affairs first hand. The entire work site is devoid of basic safety measures and can cause a repeat of the two tragedies at any time.

    The stretch of the main drain does not even have a single signage warning people of the ongoing works and urging them to be cautious while passing through. “The agency carrying out the box drain work is yet to repair and restore the road near guard walls endangering the life of residents and commuters. Under the circumstances, the possibility of a fatal mishap is looming large,” alleged a resident.

    The area also has iron pipes in precarious positions that poses danger to the passers-by. The agency is also yet to deploy personnel to warn and guide commuters and locals through the work site. “We do not know when the box drain project will be completed. The civic body should put pressure on the agency to expedite the work, fix a deadline for completion of the project and provide an alternative way for communication for locals,” said the residents adding the local MLAs and corporators should monitor the work in their respective localities.

    While a senior official of WATCO’s drainage division said barricades will be erected and personnel deployed at the projects sites soon, Barabati-Cuttack MLA Mohammed on Thursday threatened to stop all project constructions in the city if adequate safety measures are not put in place immediately.

    “I welcome development projects. But, it cannot be tolerated if projects continue to endanger lives of the people. I will stop the projects if necessary safety measures are not put in place at the worksites,” said Moquim. President of the BJP city unit Lalatendu Badu also slammed the civic body for failing to ensure safety of the residents and demanded action against those responsible for the tragedy.

    Odisha CM Sanctions Rs 10 Lakh To Keep Patients Facilitation Centre At Visakhapatnam Functional

    Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to keep the Patients Facilitation Centre opened at Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam operational for another year (2023-24).

    An amount of Rs 10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund will be provided for operating the centre, a CMO release said.

    After approving the proposal, the CM said that the move is aimed at continuing medical assistance to the poor and tribals traveling from Malkangari to Visakhapatnam.

    The state government had set up the centre in Visakhapatnam in 2016 since people from this remotest part of the state depend mostly on Visakhapatnam, which is nearer, for tertiary healthcare services. Patients from Malkangiri are provided free accommodation and food there.

    Between 2016 and 2022, an assistance of Rs 55 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund to this medical centre, the released added.

    Mercury Soars Past 41°C In Bhubaneswar By 2.30PM, Sambalpur Hottest In Odisha At 44.2°C

    Bhubaneswar: With heatwave sweeping Odisha, the day temperature touched 44.2 degree Celsius in Sambalpur by 2,30 pm on Friday, the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed.

    The mercury soared past 41 degree Celsius at 3 more places – Jharsuguda (43.4), Hirakud (42.8) and Bhubaneswar (41.4).

    Sambalpur had recorded 41 degree Celsius by 11.30 am followed by Jharsuguda at 40.6 degree and Bhubaneswar and Hirakud at 39.6 degree each. The Odisha capital had recorded 34 degree Celsius and 71% humidity by 8.30 am.

    The MeT office has forecast no large change in the day temperature during the next 5 days with mercury hovering around 43-44 degree Celsius in interior districts of the state, which is also likely to experience isolated thunderstorm activity during this period.

    Yellow warning for light to moderate rain/thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph was also issued for some parts of districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Jajpur this afternoon. There was also a forecast for light to moderate rain/thunderstorm with lightning for some parts of Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Angul, Dhenkanal and Cuttack.

    Thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph is also likely on June 4-5.

    Paradeep: A youth was brutally killed by miscreants in Paradeep of Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district. The blood-stained body was recovered from a mandap near the auto stand.

    The deceased has been identified as Tulu. He was an employee at Paradeep’s Rebecca Hotel.

    According to sources, the incident took place 100 meters away from the Adharsha police station of Paradeep town. It is suspected that some miscreants allegedly killed Tulu late last night. The locals spotted the body covered with blood and immediately informed the police about it.

    On being informed, the local police reached the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem. The cops have also initiated a probe into the matter.

    As per the primary investigation, it is suspected that the miscreants brutally killed Tulu over some past enmity.

    Boat capsizes in Malkangiri; 1 dead, 1 missing

    Malkangiri: In a tragic incident, two people went missing after a boat capsized in the Satiguda water reservoir of Odisha’s Malkangiri district. Later the dead body of one of the missing was fished out from the reservoir.

    The deceased woman was identified as Tulsa Madhi, a resident of Vimarangini village. The other missing person has been identified as Govind Sardhar of mv-112 village.

    According to sources, the two went to the dam for fishing. While fishing, the boat overturned due to heavy rains under the influence of Kalbaisakhi. As the boat capsized, the Tulsa and Govind drowned in the Satiguda water reservoir. Locals spotted them drowning and immediately informed ODRAF and fire service personnel about it.

    On being informed, ODRAF and other fire service officials reached the spot and started a search operation. During the search operation, the dead body of Tulsa was fished out. However, Govind is still missing.

    Man found hanging in Bhadrak Market Complex

    Bhadrak: The dead body of a man was found hanging in the Tarini Market complex near Banth Chakk of Odisha’s Bhadrak. The man was found hanging to the shutter of a shop in the market complex area.

    After receiving information about the incident, Bhadrak town police reach the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for autopsy. However, the identity of the deceased is yet to be ascertained.

    The incident is assumed to be happened late last night after the market complex was closed. On Friday morning, the locals found the man hanging and immediately informed the town police about it.

    On the other hand, it is also suspected that the man has not hanged himself, but rather he was murdered and later tied to a shutter with the help of a rope. The reason for death is also yet to be known.

    The cops have initiated a probe into the matter and further investigation is underway.

    The OJEE 2023 results have been announced by Skill Development and Technical Education Minister Pritiranjan Gharai and Principal Secretary Usha Padhi at a press meeting.

    It is to be noted here that the OJEE exam was conducted between May 8 and May 15. As many as 48,815 students appeared for the entrance examinations for admission into different undergraduate courses like B.Pharm, B.CAT, Lateral Entry to B.Tech, Lateral Entry to B.Pharm, and Postgraduate courses like MBA, MCA, M.Tech, M.Arch, M.Plan, M.Pharm, Integrated MBA and M.Sc. Computer Science in various universities, government colleges and Self-Financed Institutes across the State. Of which 48,783 have been qualified.

    In B-Pharma, Sourav Kumar Pati emerges as topper, Satyajit Sahoo tops MBA exam and Apurba Sundar Nayak tops in MCA/M.Sc (Computer Science),
