  • CUO At Odisha’s Koraput To Start 4 New Courses Focusing On Farming From This Academic Year

CUO At Odisha’s Koraput To Start 4 New Courses Focusing On Farming From This Academic Year

Koraput: The Central University of Odisha (CUO) will start three new under-graduate (UG) courses and one post-graduate (PG) programme from 2023-24 academic year.

The new courses include 4-year BSc in Agriculture Science, Dairy Science and Forest Management and two-year PG/MBA programme in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Vice-Chancellor of the university Prof Chakradhar Tripathi had a meeting with the Ministry of Education at New Delhi on new programmes for the young generations of not only Odisha but also India. Considering the academic scenario in the country, it has been decided to launch the new courses to cater to the interest of the young population including the tribal community.

Speaking on the new courses, the vice-chancellor said, “Agriculture, livestock, and forest products are the mainstay of the economy of Koraput district and more than 80% of its population directly depends on agriculture. Majority of farmers use traditional farming systems. This traditional knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation by families.”

In 2012, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations accorded the status of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) to the traditional agricultural system being practiced in Koraput for promoting food security and conserving biodiversity.

“Keeping this in view, the CUO will start the BSc programme in Agriculture Science, Dairy Science and Forest Management from 2023-24 academic session”, said Prof Tripathi.

He further said Koraput is a prominent producer of rice, millet, ginger, coffee, black pepper, vegetable, and jackfruit. Besides, strawberry, dragon fruit, apple, banana, and other rare fruit are also produced in the district.

“In spite of such huge production, there is no adequate management and supply chain system for marketing these products at the national and international level. The new programme of two-year PG/MBA in Logistics and Supply Chain Management will fulfill these demands,” he added.

The university will issue admission notice for the new programmes shortly and the admission process will be completed by July 31. While the intake capacity in each discipline will be 44, the new faculty for the programmes will be recruited soon, he said.

  • Museum Day: Experts Decry Restrictions On People’s Involvement In Museums In Odisha

Museum Day: Experts Decry Restrictions On People’s Involvement In Museums In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The laws restricting people’s involvement in museums have promoted to lack of awareness about India’s rich culture and traditions, said experts.

Speaking to the media persons on the occasion of International Museum Day on Thursday, Amiya Bhushan Tripathy, Odisha convener of the Indian National Trust form Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), said, “The problem about Indian museums is that we continue to follow a colonial policy in managing India’s heritage. Heritage was managed solely by Central or state governments worldwide until the early 1950s. Policies changed thereafter everywhere, except in India, where no volunteers are allowed to work at museums. The government rules simply do not allow people interested in culture and heritage to participate.”

“Article 51 A of the Indian Constitution lays down the fundamental duty of all citizens to value, preserve and protect our composite culture. Intach is India’s largest non-profit membership organisation dedicated to conservation and preservation of India’s natural, cultural, living, tangible and intangible heritage,” he added.

The International Museum Day aims at creating awareness among people about the great contribution that museums make to society. It also celebrates the role of museums in promoting cultural exchange, diversity, and inclusivity.

According to Anil Dhir, convener of INTACH’s Bhubaneswar Chapter, museums have become just storehouses. There is little outreach since schools and colleges are not connected to museums. “Educational visits and tours will educate students about history, geography, sociology, anthropology and archaeology. Intach is doing its part, but the government should loosen rules and allow citizens to fulfil their fundamental duty to preserve and protect their composite culture,” he said.

Dr Biswajit Mohanty is of the opinion that raising funds through corporate and private donors should be allowed in India just like the practice of private sponsors for museums abroad. As the new Companies Bill mandates that corporations set 2% of their net profits for Corporate Social Responsibility, funding heritage protection can be one area that companies could consider to make a difference and to preserve, protect and popularise India’s heritage, he said.

Museums should be set up in each district which would encourage school children and the public to take interest in our heritage and culture and work for its active preservation. They would instil a sense of pride in the glorious heritage of the ancient land of Kalinga.

INTACH has executed four museum projects in the two decades. The Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Museum, the Maritime Museum and the Judicial Museum were set up at Cuttack. The ancestral house of Netaji at Puri too was converted into a museum by INTACH. Two more museums – one at the renovated Town Hall in Sambalpur and the other at the Citizens Jubilee Library at Balangir – are underway.

The Manoj Das-Manmath Das memorial at Balasore too is being undertaken. A proposal for a Millet Museum at Cuttack is under consideration. Besides, INTACH has been instrumental in the preservation and conservation of many heritage structures including Charchika Temple at Banki, Rani Bhakhri at Sambalpur, many old temples in Bhubaneswar and a portion of the Nilagiri Palace.

  • How Odisha FC Pulled Off The Sergio Lobera Coup, Beating Off Strong Challenge

How Odisha FC Pulled Off The Sergio Lobera Coup, Beating Off Strong Challenge

Bhubaneswar: Odisha FC, on the back of their most rewarding season, are leaving no stone unturned to consolidate the gains and push higher.

Having made the playoffs for the first time, lifted the Hero Super Cup and qualified for the main round of AFC Cup, Odisha have started the process of team building.

Just the other day, they signed a contract extension with dependable goalkeeper Amrinder Singh. And on Wednesday, Odisha FC pulled off a coup of sorts by appointing Spaniard Sergio Lobera as their head coach on a two-year deal.

In his four previous seasons in India, Lobera left an indelible mark on Indian football during his three-season stint with FC Goa and then one season in charge of Mumbai City FC. The 46-year-old coach helped FC Goa advance to the playoff stage all three times, with icing on the cake in 2019-20 when his boys topped the ISL standings to lift the League Winners’ Shield.

He then took on Mumbai City FC’s offer and coached them to the double of ISL League winners’ Shield and the ISL winners’ trophy in 2020-21.

Lobera’s next destination was China, to coach League One side Sichuan Jiuniu. However, the Chinese honeymoon lasted just a year.

When it became known that he was open to the idea of returning to India, Lobera was a man in big demand. East Bengal, in fact, were learnt to be very close to inking a contract with the master tactician. A handful of other clubs were also keen on getting him on board.

But it was Odisha FC who stolr others’ thunder, and got his signature.

“When we reached out to him, there was uncertainty whether he would even consider Odisha. But once we started speaking and presented our project, he knew what we aim to achieve,” Odisha FC president Raj Athwal was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

“We want to truly build a sustainable club and I’ve got to praise general manager (Abhik Chatterjee) for making more of an effort rather than wait for things to happen,” Athwal said, adding that Lobera made average players good and good players excellent.

The Bhubaneswar-based club’s management believes that Lobera is the right man to lead Odisha FC to greater heights by instilling a winning mentality among is players.

“We are delighted to welcome Sergio to the OFC family. His appointment is an important moment for the club which signifies the direction and aspiration we want to head towards and the club would like to welcome Sergio and wish him the very best for the upcoming season,” said Athwal.
