    MeT predicts severe heatwave in Odisha

    Bhubaneswar: During the next few days, there is a possibility of significant variation in the daytime temperature in the state informed the Official Twitter handle of Meteorological Centre, situated here in Bhubaneswar.

    The temperature is likely to increase in the next few days, said the recent weather bulletin.

    Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that some parts of interior Odisha are likely to experience abnormal weather with record temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or more for the next five days.

    Many places in Odisha will record temperatures of over 40°C said the latest report of the local MeT office.

    Odisha is reeling under hot and humid conditions since the past few days. Jharsuguda is the hottest place in the state of Odisha and recorded 41.6 degrees Celsius.

    Another place that is Kirei recorded 41.7 degrees Celsius, said the latest bulletin of the Official Twitter handle of Meteorological Centre Bhubaneswar, India Meteorological Department.

    DoT disconnects 51,260 fake SIM cards in Odisha

    Bhubaneswar: The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has disconnected 51,260 fake SIM cards of different telecom service providers in Odisha after finding those non-bonafide.

    The DoT has conceptualised and implemented artificial intelligence (AI) based facial recognition tool called ASTR for telecom SIM subscriber verification with a vision to analyse, identify and weed out fake/forged, non-bonafide mobile connections to curb the menace of cybercrimes.

    Using ASTR technology, the telecommunication department identified 52,088 suspected mobile connections issued by different telecom operators in Odisha. These suspected mobile connections were re-verified by the concerned telecom operators and as a result 51,260 connections were found non bonafide and disconnected, B.K. Nayak, additional DG (telecom) Odisha, said in a statement.

    Based on analysis, a total of 2,417 point of sales (PoSs)/SIM sellers who were involved in such fraudulent activities have been blacklisted. Further, police complaints have been made for investigation and taking necessary action against the culprits, he said.

    Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday reached here on a four-day Odisha visit, during the visit, he is scheduled to attend a host of programmes.

    Bhagwat will attend Sangha Shiksha Varg, summer camp programmes, at Gatiroutpatna in Cuttack district and some other events during his visit, an RSS official said.

    Bhagwat is also likely to meet RSS functionaries from different parts of the state and hold discussions regarding various activities of the Sangh.The RSS chief is also likely to discuss organisational activities such as plans for expansion and training of workers.

    He is not scheduled to hold any public meeting, the functionary said.

    Vigilance Apprehends Sr Revenue Assistant On Bribe Charge In Odisha’s Ganjam

    Berhampur: Vigilance sleuths on Friday apprehended a record-keeper for taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

    Following a complaint that Swati Sucharita Patra, Senior Revenue Assistant-cum-Record Keeper in the office of Chhatrapur tehsildar in Ganjam district was demanding the bribe to process the file for conversation of agricultural land to homestead land and issuing record of rights (ROR), the Vigilance laid a trap.

    As per the plan, the complainant went to give the bribe to Patra and the Vigilance officials nabbed her accepting the amount. They recovered the amount from the possession of Patra and seized it.

    Following the trap, the Vigilance conducted simultaneous searches at 3 locations of Patra from DA angle.

    Berhampur Vigilance has filed a case under PC (Amendment) Act, 2018 in this connection. Further investigation is in progress.

    Bhubaneswar: The Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Mocha’ over Southeast adjoining Central Bay of Bengal intensified into Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (118-220 km/hr) over Central adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal on Friday morning.

    “The Severe Cyclonic Storm over Southeast adjoining Central Bay of Bengal moved northwards with a speed of 9 kmph during past 6 hours, intensified into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm and lay centered at 5.30 hours over Central adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal, about 520 km west-northwest of Port Blair, 1010 km south-southwest of Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and 930 km south-southwest of Sittwe (Myanmar),” according to the national bulletin issued by IMD.

    The system is unlikely to have a direct bearing on India as it is expected to move towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts.

    “It is very likely to move north-northeastwards and intensify further over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. It is likely to cross southeast Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts between Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar), close to Sittwe (Myanmar) around noon of May 14 as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 150-160 kmph gusting to 175 kmph,” it added.

    According to the Tropical Weather Outlook, the various numerical models including IMD GFS, NCEP GFS, ECMWF, NCUM, UKMO AND IMD MME are now consistent on the track and landfall point. Current model guidance is not indicating weakening of the system before landfall.

    Meanwhile, the US Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) has also upgraded Mocha to a category 1 cyclone with a forecast peak of at least 120 kt (222 kmph). The recent GFS and ECMWF model runs also show landfall a bit north of JTWC and IMD forecast.

    On Thursday, senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls had tweeted that the system has started its turn toward the NE with additional strengthening likely into the weekend. “Landfall as a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm or a Cat 2 or 3 hurricane equivalent is expected between Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, and Kyaukpyu, Myanmar, on Sunday,” he added.

    According Director of CEC S C Sahu, the system was centered 900 km South of Paradip last night and moved northwards with speed 11 kmph. The favourable sea surface temp 31 degree Celsius may favour further intensification of system till May 13 as the system will recurve northeastwards on May 12 towards Bangladesh coast. He said that there is a probability of cloudy sky on May 12-13 but there is no indication of rain for Odisha.

    Though global models are showing north-eastwards movement towards Bangladesh but observational data indicate that landfall maybe in Sunderban-Bangladesh region with wind speed around 200 kmph on May 14 afternoon and in such case, there might be rain in Bhadrak and Balasore, Sahu added.

    Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government on Friday extended the validity of Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET) qualifying certificates for lifetime from seven years as was the case earlier.

    “The candidates once qualified in OTET will be now eligible to appear in recruitments to be held in future for engagement of Teachers in elementary cadre,” the Office of Chief Minister (CMO) tweeted.

    The decision has come as a major relief for the candidates applying for the elementary school teacher posts.

    Know More About Cancer Hospital To Come Up On NISER Campus In Bhubaneswar

    Bhubaneswar: The Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre will come up on NISER, Bhubaneswar, campus at Jatni in Odisha’s Khurda district as a joint venture between Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), which is the administrative department of NISER, and Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) and Tata Trusts at an investment of Rs 650 crore.

    It was among the 3 projects worth Rs 5,800 crore whose foundation was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

    According to sources, the plan to have a state-of-the-art cancer hospital at NISER campus was announced by the Centre last year. While NISER has earmarked 17 acre land on its campus for the more than 150-bed cancer hospital, Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship will share 13 acre available with it near the campus. The Odisha government has also promised 40 acre for the project, sources further said.

    While the DAE will spend Rs 400 crore, which is the major cost of the project, Tata Trusts will chip in with Rs 250 crore. It is likely to be ready in two to three years.

    The hospital will not only provide affordable cancer care to the people but also help the institute conduct clinical and scientific research on cancer. Once commissioned, students of three-year MSc in medical and radiological physics being offered by NISER can get training on the campus instead of going to TMC Mumbai and other hospitals, the sources added.

    Kendrapada: A physical education teacher of a government-run high school under Mahakalapada block in Odisha’s Kendrapada district was suspended on Thursday for allegedly sending lewd messages to a Class IX student.

    According to sources, the girl’s mother had lodged a complaint against the teacher after coming to know about the obscene messages when she enquired about her daughter’s reluctance to attend school. She alleged that he sent messages saying ‘I love you’ to her 15-year-old daughter on her mobile phone.

    “We investigated the matter and came to know that the teacher sent her obscene messages and accordingly, he was suspended,” block development officer Tanmaya Kumar Behera was quoted as saying.

    The accused teacher has been identified as Bibhuti Bhusan Swain.

    Police also filed a case against the teacher after students and their parents on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of the school, demanding his arrest. A case under section 506 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code), section 61 of Information Technology Act 200 and section 12 of POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) Act, 2012, has been registered against Swain, Mahakalapada police station IIC Maheswar Sethi said, adding that he is absconding and efforts are on to nab him.

    Bhubaneswar: Counting of votes for Jharsuguda by-election, which saw 79.21 % polling on May 10, will begin at 8 am at 14 tables on Saturday (May 13).

    Briefing the media, Chief Electoral Officer, Odisha, Nikunja Dhal said that there will be 18 complete rounds and one partial round and postal ballots will be counted first. “Counting of the votes polled through the EVMS will start by 8.30 am. The strongroom is on the same campus. There will be strict access control,” he said.

    A three-layer security arrangement has been made for the counting process, he added.

    Notably, around 1,75, 616 voters (79.21%) exercised their franchise in the bypoll which was necessitated following the murder of the sitting MLA and health minister Naba Kishore Das on January 29. The male voter turnout in the constituency stood at 80% (89,044) while the female voter turnout was 77.96% (86,560). Of the 63 transgender voters, 12 exercised their franchise.

    The strongroom was sealed on Thursday night in the presence of observers, political parties and candidates.

    Rayagada: The Maoists have called for bandh in support of their 12-point charter of demands in Odisha’s 7 districts on May 15.

    In an audio release on Friday, the banned outfit has announced that it would enforce bandh in Rayagada, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Boudh, Gajapati and Nayagarh districts to press its demands. However, essential services including hospital, ambulances, medical stores and examination centres would be exempted from the bandh, it added.

    Their demanded included allotment of houses to deserving beneficiaries under PM Awas Yojana or Biju Awas Yojana in 6 months, free supply of oil, dal, salt along with PDS rice, construction of roads, drinking water supply and power connection to all villages and construction of hospitals in every panchayat.

    Stating that education has been most neglected in the backward areas of these districts, the Maoists demanded establishment of Adarsh Schools in every panchayat, reopening of the schools closed for lack of sufficient number of students, appointment of teachers in vacant posts and monthly scholarship of Rs 3,000 to tribal students.

    Highlighting the unemployment problems in the area, the Maoists demanded payment of monthly unemployment allowance of Rs 3,000, Besides, increasing the old age and widow pension to Rs 3,000 was also demanded by them.
