    Odisha boils as temperature touches 46 degrees, 7 places record temperature of 45 degreeC or above

    Bhubaneswar: Odisha virtually turned into a cauldron today as the day temperature touched the 46 degree Celsius-mark, informed the regional centre of India Meteorological Department.

    A total of seven places of the State recorded temperature 45 degree Celsius or above with Sambalpur sizzling with the highest temperature of the day i.e 46 degrees.

    Apart from Sambalpur, the six other places where the temperature rose to or above 45 degrees Celsius are Sonepur (45.8), Hirakud (45.5), Boudh (45.5), Jharsuguda (45.2), Bolangir (45.0) and Sundergarh (45.0).

    Likewise, Bargarh boiled at 44.2 degrees. This was followed by Titilagarh and Rourkela where the maximum temperature rose to 43.5 degree Celsius.

    Similarly, Nayagarh witnessed a temperature of 43.4 degree Celsius while Deogarh, Talcher and Nuapada saw the temperature of 43 degree Celsius.

    The residents of the Twin City of Odisha- Bhubaneswar and Cuttack – has to witness temperature of 41.6 and 40.2 degree Celsius respectively.

    Gopalpur in Ganjam district was the coolest place of the day as it reported a temperature of 34.4 degree Celsius.

    Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted that the intense heat wave condition in Odisha will continue till June 21 and thereafter the State is likely to get some relief as the Monsoon is expected to hit the state by the said date.

    Bhubaneswar: The State of Odisha has been conferred with the coveted 4th National Water Awards, 2022 today as the 2nd Best State for the outstanding work done in the field of water resources conservation and management. Anu Garg, the Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary of Water Resources received the award from the Vice President of India, in presence of Minister, Jal Shakti at a function organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Govt. of India at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today.

    Besides, Ganjam district has also been adjudged the Best District in the country in efficient water resources management. Dibya Jyoti Parida, the Collector of Ganjam district received the award in the function.

    The Department of Water Resources has made remarkable progress in recent years in sustainable development and management of water resources. More than four lakh farmers have been provided water security by creating additional irrigation facilities of 3.2 lakh hectares. Two major projects i.e., Lower Indra and Upper Indravati Lift Canal; 61 Mega Lift Irrigation Projects, 2833 Community LIPs and 22,500 Deep Bore Wells have been completed thereby ensuring geographical and social inclusiveness. Long pending issues of Subarnarekha Irrigation Projects have been resolved and irrigation has been provided to 32,000 hectares. The irrigation efficiency of the projects has been increased by more than 20% through adoption of underground pipeline in the distribution systems of all categories of irrigation projects.

    For conservation of water resources, 46 In-stream Storage Structures have been taken up in various rivers to conserve 49,650 hectare-meter of water with an investment of Rs 11700 Cr. Besides, the ground water resources of the State has also increased from 15.57 billion cubic meters in 2017 to 17.79 billion cubic meters in 2022 through various ground water conservation measures. Further, large scale micro water conservation activities have been taken up under the Jal Shakti Abhiyan throughout the state.

    Besides, a series of IT initiatives have been introduced by the Department to bring in transparency and transformation in the Department. They are: GoWater (Water ERP) for irrigation management, project monitoring and flood forecasting; PROMISe for expediting procurement work; e-CAD application software for tracking CAD and PIM activities; Ama Jalashaya portal, covering all the water bodies for planning water use for multiple purposes; PINSYS is a robust database of WR Engineers for effective HRM; WaterDox is a web enabled interface to store documents and legacy data of the Department in digital form to be accessible to users for official purpose etc.

    Involvement of Pani Panchayats in water management and women in water governance are also key to the success of the Department.

    Bhubaneswar: In what can be considered as a bad news for the people of Odisha, heat to severe heat wave conditions likely to prevail across the State, informed the regional centre of India Meteorological Department (IMD).

    As per the forecast of the IMD, the scorching heat wave conditions will continue till the possible arrival of Monsoon by June 21.

    Day 1 (Valid upto 8.30 AM of 18.06.2023):

    ORANGE WARNING: Heat wave to severe heat wave condition very likely to prevail at many places over the district of Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, Cuttack, Khurda, Nayagarh and Kandhamal.

    Odisha Man Held For Poaching Collared Kingfisher, Posting It On Social Media

    Kendrapada: A man was arrested after photos and videos showing him poaching a collared kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris) in a prawn farm around Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha’s Kendrapada district went viral on social media.

    The arrested poacher has been identified as Gurupada Dalai of Pataparia village.

    The accused poached a collared kingfisher as the bird dived into the prawn farm of Dalai to catch prawn at Bandhamala village under Rajkanika block, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Bhitarkanika National Park, Sudarshan Gopinath Yadav was quoted by PTI as saying.

    The photos and videos of the killing of the kingfisher by the accused went viral, leading to an outrage on social media platforms.

    Dalai was arrested on Thursday under the relevant sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 as the bird is a protected species under the law and further investigation was underway, added the forest officer.

    The Bhitarkanika national park is home to eight different species of kingfisher, including the collared kingfisher.

    All these species are blessed with their characteristic large heads, long-sharp and pointed beaks, short legs and stubby tails. They consume a wide range of prey ranging from fishes to geckos and other small invertebrates, added the forest officer.

    Application Process For ‘Mo Ghara Yojana’ Loan Begins In Odisha

    Bhubaneswar: The application process for financial assistance for the Odisha government’s ‘Mo Ghara Yojana’ commenced on Friday. The state government will provide loan with subsidy to construct concrete houses.

    In order to avail of the loan, one has to apply providing the house record land plot, Aadhaar card, and an identity card in his/her name. Loan aspirants can get registered on the website https://rhodisha.gov.in/moghara, sources said.

    An OTP will be sent to the applicant’s registered mobile number after registration which has to be entered correctly in the portal for successful registration.

    Eligibility and subsidy details:

    The following residents of Odisha are eligible for loans under the state government’s ‘Mo Ghar’ Yojana:

    If the family is living in a thatched house or a thatched roof house.
    If the family has not received any assistance from the government in the housing scheme before or has received assistance of less than Rs 70,000.
    If the monthly income of the family is less than Rs 25,000.
    If the family does not own a four-wheeler for personal use.
    If no member of the family has been a regular government employee or pensioner or a government enterprise.
    Households with less than 5 acres of irrigated land or 15 acres of non-irrigated land.
    Beneficiaries of the Mo Ghar Yoganja can get a maximum bank loan of up to Rs 3 lakh and repay the loan within ten years. While people in the general category will get a Rs 30,000 subsidy, members of the ST/SC community will get a Rs 40,000 subsidy if they borrow 1 lakh. A beneficiary can avail a loan of Rs 1 lakh, Rs 1.5 lakh, Rs 2 lakh, and Rs 3 lakh.

    No processing fee will be charged by the bank to the beneficiary for sanctioning the loan. The government will bear the legal advisor’s fee of Rs 1000 for the loan application. Eligible beneficiaries who were not previously included in this scheme will be involved in various schemes such as construction of toilets, electricity supply, and drinking water.

    The state government has earmarked an outlay of Rs 2,150 crore for 2 years for 4 lakh beneficiaries under the scheme.

    Meanwhile, the state government has reportedly directed the Block Development Officers (BDOs) to distribute work orders for the Centre’s PMAY houses, in a major relief to more than 9.5 lakh beneficiaries. The work orders will be distributed online.

    Notably, over 9.5 lakh houses were sanctioned by the Centre to be distributed under the PMAY scheme in the state. However, the houses could not be distributed even after five months due to a dispute over identification beneficiaries.

    Puri: Three children below the age of one year have been dedicated to the services of Lord Jagannath in the famous Srimandir in Puri of Odisha. It is worth mentioning that, in the family of Daitapatis all the members are traditionally supposed to engage themselves in the service of Lord Jagannath.

    These daitapatis or servitors are appointed by the SJTA and the Odisha Government to serve Lord Jagannath and to conduct all the secret rituals of the dieties when they are in the ‘Anasara ghara’.

    Thus, the youngest member of the Daitapati families are introduced into the service of Lord Jagannath and his siblings. The new young daitapatis Baladeb Dasmohapatra and Ekanshu Dasmohapatra are below a year old but will offer daitapati service at the famous Jagannath Temple.

    It is further worth mentioning that they will become eligible to receive a remuneration of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh per annum, said reliable sources.

    Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra were in the ‘Anasara’ period after being bathed on snana purnima with as many as 108 pots of water.

    One of the servitors said that the children automatically learn the rituals by observing their elder family member. Another daitapati added that the kids will observe the rituals and learn them by the time they grow up. He further clarified that all the rituals are secrets and passed on to the children by the elders.

    On June 15, Lord Jagannath and his siblings have recovered from their fever. The Daitapati servitors visited the palace and informed the Puri King Gajapati Maharaj about the recovery of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra in the customary manner.

    The deities had fallen ill following the holy bath on the day of Snana Purnima. However, with service of the Daitapati servitors Lord Jagannath and sibling deities have recovered. The daitapatis visited the Srinahar, the palace of Gajapati Maharaj in a procession and informed about the recovery to the King.

    Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday expelled president of Sankhemundi block in Ganjam district, Nilamadhab Raut, for indulging in anti-party activities.

    BJD president Naveen Patnaik has ordered for his immediate expulsion from the party, an office order said.

    The regional party has been witnessing an increase in indiscipline and dissidence in the home districts of Naveen. The party is reportedly grappling with infighting in six of the 13 Assembly seats in the district. With his failing health, seven-time MLA Surjya Narayan Patro seems to be in trouble in his own constituency. BJD leader and Deputy Chairman of Chhatrapur NAC, Laxmi Padhi too has opened a front against the sitting MLA Subash Behera. The statement of Gopalpur MLA and ousted BJD leader, Pradeep Panigrahi, about ‘the need for an orange revolution in Ganjam’ also created a stir, recently.

    On June 1, the party appointed members of BJD Ganjam District Committee with veteran leader and former MLA Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik being once again named as its president. The recent resignation of Assembly Speaker Bikram Keshari Arukha, who was sworn in as new Odisha finance minister, was also seen as a tactic to reinforce BJD’s foothold in Ganjam.

    Bhubaneswar: Odisha opener Shantanu Mishra has been named in the East Zone squad for the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

    The tournament will be played in Bengaluru from June 28 to July 16.

    The 29-year-old Shantanu had a good run in last season’s Ranji Trophy, scoring an unbeaten double hundred and a century besides three 50s.

    Another Odisha player Suryakant Pradhan, a medium-pacer, has been named as stand-by No. 1 for the Duleep Trophy, according to an Odisha Cricket Association press release.

    The Duleep Trophy will kick off the 2023-24 season. It’s the earliest start to the Indian domestic season, which has never got underway in June.

    According to reports, the woman a post-graduation first year student was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her hostel room.

    She was immediately rushed to the hospital, but was declared brought dead. She was studying to be a Skin specialist.
