    ATM thief gang busted in Palampur, two arrested

    The special cell of the local police busted an interstate gang involved in the replacement of ATM cards and cheating people in Palampur and its nearby areas. The police have arrested two members of the gang from Uttar Pradesh.

    In view of the increasing ATM thefts, a team of the Kangra police’s special cell was given the task of gathering inputs and identifying the gang involved in the crime. The team zeroed in on the suspects, but did not have any success.

    Later, the police received a complaint pertaining to the change of ATM cards at Gopalpur and Dadh, wherein the culprits managed to withdraw Rs 66,000 from the account of aged persons who had come to the ATM to withdraw money.

    A case under Sections 420 and 379 of the IPC was registered at the Palampur police station on March 12.

    A special police team was sent to Saharanpur. It raided a house and succeeded in arresting two persons — Jagmohan Singh of Mujjafarpur and Deepak Sharma of Saharanpur.

    Heavy rainfall and hailstorm, accompanied by high-velocity winds lashed Palampur and its adjoining areas last night, disrupting normal life in many parts of the region.

    As per the reports, Maranda, Holta, Banuri, Tanda, Rajpur, Gopalpur and Panchrukhi were among the worst-affected. Several trees were uprooted in these areas, blocking local roads and highways.

    The vehicular traffic remained suspended on the Pathankot-Mandi national highway near Kalu Di Hatti for hours, after the uprooting of pine trees along the highway. Long queues of vehicles were seen between Maranda and Kalu Di Hatti. Later, the administration diverted the traffic via Mehaja-Sidhpur roads, before the traffic was restored in the morning.

    NHAI Project Director Vikas Surjewala said, “As soon as I received the reports of uprooting of trees along the highway, heavy machinery was deployed to remove the trees. The traffic was restored to normal by afternoon.”

    Power supply was also disrupted in lower areas of Palampur, but it was restored within a few hours. Vehicular traffic to Chhota Bhanghal was suspended after snowfall near Multhan, Bara Gram, Luhardi and Kothi Kohar. A number of passengers were reportedly stranded at Multhan.

    No tandem or solo flights took off from Billing today. The administration has suspended all paragliding activities in Bir-Billing to avoid mishaps.

    Meanwhile, upper reaches of the Dhauladhar ranges experienced unusual snowfall. The entire valley was in the grip of a cold wave. Rainfall and hailstorm caused extensive damage to various crops as fields were waterlogged. Mango and other fruit crop were also damaged because of the untimely rain and cold weather.

    Palampur: The area under fruit production is increasing in the state. In a decade, the area under fruit production in the state has increased by about 30 thousand hectares. Apple is at the forefront in terms of area grown and production. The area for growing fruits in the state continued to expand and now it has reached 235,785 hectares. Apple, mango, orange, pear, plum, peach, galgal and apricot are the major horticulture crops. The year 2010-11 can be considered golden from the point of view of fruit production, when with a new record the figure of fruit production crossed one million metric tonnes. In 2010-11, fruits were planted in an area of 211295 hectares in the state and the total production of fruits was 1027821 metric tonnes with a bumper crop of 892112 metric tonnes of apples. In 2007-08, 200502 metric tonnes of area was under fruit production in the state. There came a time in this sector when the figure of production could not even touch four lakh metric tonnes. In 2006-07, 369103 metric tonnes of fruits, 382237 in 2009-10 and 372823 metric tonnes in 2011-12 could be produced in the state. The total fruit production in 2021-22 was 7.54 lakh tonnes, while the production in 2022-23 (up to December) stood at 7.93 lakh tonnes.     The divisional commissioner of Kangra has set aside the election of the Congress councillor from Ward Number 2 of the Palampur MC. The elections of the Palampur civic body were held two years ago.

    He admitted a petition filed by Radha Sood, who had challenged the order of returning officers for rejecting her nomination papers. The returning officer had stated in his order that Radha had encroached upon government land in Ward Number 2.

    During the hearing, Radha produced documentary evidence that she was never in possession of the government land. Satisfied with the arguments and documents that Radha placed before the court, the divisional commissioner set aside the ward election.

    Palampur SDM Amit Guleria said he had received a copy of the order issued by the divisional commissioner. Now, a fresh election was likely to be held in May this year after the completion of new voters’ list and other formalities.
