    DMK leaders condole demise of industrialist Karumuttu T Kannan

    CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leaders on Wednesday expressed condolences on the passing away of industrialist Karumuttu T Kannan and noted his contributions in the domain of industries and education. Industrialist Karumuttu Kannan, who was chairman of the board of trustees (Thakkar) of the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple, passed away on Tuesday due to ill health. He was 70 years old.

    DMK MP Kanimozhi, Minster Udiyanidhi Stalin, and various political leaders paid respects to the late industrialist’s mortal remain at his residence on Tuesday. The funeral will be held on Wednesday. Kanimozhi said, “It is a great shock to us that Karumuthu Kannan, who is in the minds of the people of Madurai, has disappeared. No one can compensate for his loss. My deepest condolences to his family”.

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed deep condolences on the businessman’s death terming his death as a “great loss”. He noted the contributions of the late industrialist in the fields of industries, education, and various development and renovation works done by him in temples. The Chief Minister also stated that during his tenure at the helm of Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai, he helped the poor and common people in education.

    He also served as the Chairman of Thiagarajar Mills, Madurai, and Thiagarajar Colleges. Over the years, he was associated with academic and industrial organizations including the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the South Indian Mills Association. He was a member of the State Planning Commission and was actively involved in several universities in Tamil Nadu including Anna University, Chennai. Kannan was a recipient of the Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Award given by the Tamil Nadu government for the promotion of education and social service.

    Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Yaseen Akhtar Misbahi passes away

    Maulana Yaseen Akhtar Misbahi, a renowned Islamic scholar who was affiliated with the Ahle Sunnat Barelvi organization Raza Academy, passed away on May 7th, Sunday.

    Misbahi was a prominent figure in the Indian Muslim community, who held several important positions throughout his career. He served as a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and was in charge of the Darul Qalam Madrassa. Additionally, he founded the Qadri Mosque in Zakir Nagar, New Delhi and was previously an Urdu journalist who edited the Kanzul Iman monthly magazine in Delhi.

    During the Shah Bano case in 1985, Misbahi was elected as the vice president of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, where he advocated for the protection of Shariat. He led various political and social demonstrations to safeguard the rights of Indian Muslims.

    Furthermore, Misbahi was a prolific writer who authored numerous books on various Islamic and Muslim issues in India.

    Malayalam actor Mammukoya passes away

    THIRUVANATHAPURAM: Malayalam actor Mammukoya passed away at a hospital in Kozhikode on Wednesday. He breathed his last around 1.10 p.m., according to the hospital authorities where he was being treated.

    The 76-year-old actor collapsed while taking part at a function connected with a football tournament in Malappuram district on Monday night and was immediately rushed to a hospital.

    Earlier in the day, the doctors had informed his family members that the condition of the veteran actor is getting worse and his life was sustained on the ventilator.

    Mammukoya worked in a timber mill at Kozhikode and started his acting career in the theatre in 1979.

    In his long career, he donned the grease paint in over 450 Malayalam films and has won two state awards. The highlight of his acting career was his delivery of the Malabar dialect and his physical stature which sent people reeling in laughter, the moment he opened his mouth.
