Police get warrant to search Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence

LAHORE: Police in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Friday obtained warrants from court to carry out a search at former prime minister Imran Khan’s residence, local media reported.

The development comes after the provincial government decided to send a team to hold talks with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief before conducting the search operation at Zaman Park, Geo News reported.

According to details, an officer of the rank of superintendent of police will lead the party which will also include women personnel. Commissioner Lahore Division will accompany the search team.

The provincial government on Wednesday had claimed that “30-40 terrorists were hiding inside Khan’s residence” and gave 24 hours to PTI to hand over these miscreants or face action, Geo News reported.

However, no action was taken after the deadline expired on Thursday.

Later, Punjab Information Minister Amir Mir said that law enforcers will conduct a search operation at Khan’s residence after his permission and in front of cameras to apprehend “terrorists”.

“We [the interim government] have decided that instead of a head-on collision, we will send a delegation to Khan sahab under the supervision of the Lahore commissioner,” Mir told Geo News.

“They will ask him [Khan] to allow them to conduct a search operation. A police party – comprising 400 personnel – will accompany the delegation as there is a reported presence of terrorists,” he said.

Earlier, Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Bilal Saddique Kamyana claimed to have arrested six more “terrorists” attempting to flee from Khan’s Zaman Park residence.

According to CCPO Kamyana four of the alleged “terrorists” were involved in the attack on Askari Tower while two of them were among those who ransacked the Corps Commander House Lahore.

On Thursday, Punjab province Caretaker Information Minister Amir Mir shared that eight “terrorists” had been arrested while they were escaping from Lahore’s Zaman Park area.

The arrested terrorists were wanted in the attack on the Lahore Corps Commander House on May 9, he had said, Geo News reported.

In US, A Man Shot By Police Ran At ‘full Sprint’ Toward Officer While Holding Sword Over Head

A man shot by police in Massachusetts last weekend was holding a sword over his head and running at an officer at a “full sprint,” police said.

The 23-year-old man faces attempted murder and other charges in connection with the encounter in Oxford at about 6 a.m. Sunday, police Chief Anthony Saad said in a statement Tuesday.

The officer was in a marked cruiser but was not responding to a call when the suspect, on foot, abruptly entered the roadway and blocked the vehicle, Saad said.

The suspect, an Oxford resident, advanced on the cruiser while swinging the sword, so the officer put his vehicle into reverse “to create distance between him and the defendant,” Saad said.

When the officer could not back up any farther due to traffic, he stepped out of the cruiser and ordered the suspect to drop the sword.

The suspect “then began a full sprint towards the officer with the sword over his head,” the statement said. The officer again ordered the suspect to stop before opening fire when the man got close enough to strike.

The suspect remains hospitalized, the chief said. Police did not release his condition.

The officer, whose name was not made public, was not hurt and was put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

No arraignment date has been scheduled. It could not immediately be determined if he had a lawyer.

Panvel Taluka police detained several villagers including former Peoples and Worker Party (PWP) MLA Balaram Patil on Friday for allegedly opposing Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Area (NAINA) in Devad village in Panvel taluka. However, they were let off after two hours.

Villagers under the banner of NAINA Project Affected Utkarsh Samiti (NPAUS) have been opposing NAINA for a long time over the compensation issue.

NAINA is a participatory land pooling scheme where villagers will get 40 percent of the developed land of the total land they will surrender to develop NAINA city in the Raigad district. At present, CIDCO is executing a pilot project, consisting of 23 villages in the Raigad district. Villagers’ allegations

Meanwhile, the villagers alleged that a land parcel meant for grazing of animals was bought by CIDCO and was allotted to private developers.

Advocate Suresh Thakur, Chairman of Navi Mumbai 95 Villages NAINA and Other Project Affected Committee said that when CIDCO can buy land from the government body, it can also acquire land from villages by giving proper compensation.

“In the land pooling scheme, villagers will get only 40 percent of the total land to be surrendered. Since they will not get any monetary compensation, what they will do with the land. Their farming will also go away with the scheme,” said Thakur.MLA says project will take away villagers’ lands

Former MLA Patil said that the NAINA project will snatch villagers’ lands. Patil had led a protest with a fleet of farmers’ vehicles from Panvel to Belapur in March.

According to villagers, the impact assessment report says that around 42% of land in NAINA is multi-crop land. How will the villagers survive if they surrender these lands and get only 40% of the development land? Even villagers have to pay different charges for development.”
