Mumbai | It is raining heavily in many cities of Maharashtra this time. The situation is such that water has been filled up to the knees in many places and there is a flood-like scene in many places. A 22-year-old man was killed and another injured when a tree fell on a shanty in Mumbai following rains in the last 24 hours.

This is the third death in two days in incidents of tree falling amid rains in Mumbai. Two people were killed in separate incidents of falling trees in Mumbai’s western suburbs on Wednesday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘Orange Alert’, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in six districts of Maharashtra namely Palghar, Raigad, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Nashik on Thursday.

The IMD issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Mumbai on Thursday, predicting relatively less intense rain. According to civic officials, no major water-logging was reported in the city and suburbs since Thursday morning as the intensity of rains reduced after heavy overnight rains.

Officials said suburban services on Central Railway and Western Railway were normal, though trains were running late by a few minutes.

A huge banyan tree was uprooted and fell on a shanty in the Indu Oil Mill complex in Byculla area around 2.30 am on Thursday, trapping some people inside, a BMC official said.

After getting the information, the fire brigade personnel reached the spot by cutting the branches of the tree and pulled out the two injured from the hut. Both were rushed to the nearby JJ Hospital where doctors declared one of them, Rehman Khan (22), brought dead, the official said. Moderate to heavy rains lashed Mumbai and its neighboring areas in the last 24 hours. An official said the IMD has predicted “moderate to heavy rain with very heavy falls at isolated places likely over the city and suburbs” in the next 24 hours.

Amethi | In connection with the attack on Azad Samaj Party President and Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, the police have taken into custody a youth named Vimlesh Singh from Amethi. In this case, Amethi SP Dr. Elamaran had told that a case has been registered against unknown people regarding the viral post. The case is being investigated. He told that five days ago a Facebook post was made in Amethi regarding Chandrashekhar Azad, in which death threats were made. After investigation, strict action will be taken on this matter.

Prayagraj | The Supreme Court will hear on July 3 a plea seeking an independent probe into the murder of criminal gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. Three criminals posing as journalists shot dead Atiq and his brother Ashraf in police custody in Prayagraj in April. According to the July 3 cause list uploaded on the apex court’s website, a bench of Justice SR Bhatt and Justice Arvind Kumar will hear the petition filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari.

The petitioner has also requested the court to order an inquiry into 183 police encounters in Uttar Pradesh since 2017. The top court, while hearing the matter on April 28, had questioned the state government as to why Atiq Ahmed and former MLA Ashraf were produced before the media while being taken to hospital for medical examination in police custody. The three assailants fired at Ateeq and his brother at close range, killing both of them instantly.

The court had also asked the Uttar Pradesh government that how did the killers get the information about taking both of them to the hospital? The counsel appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government told the top court that the state government has constituted a three-member inquiry commission to probe the incident which was shown live on national television. The lawyer had said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the state police is also probing the matter.

The petitioner has said, “Directions should be issued to protect the rule of law by setting up an independent expert committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to investigate the 183 encounters since 2017, as well as to investigate the death of Atiq and Ashraf.” In addition to Tiwari’s petition, Ayesha Noori, sister of Ateeq and Ashraf, has also filed a separate petition in the top court seeking ‘custodial’ and ‘extrajudicial deaths’ of the two brothers. A request has been made to set up an inquiry commission headed by a retired judge of an apex court to investigate.

Noida | A woman going on a scooty with her son in Sector 24 police station area of the district snatched her mobile phone and fell down along with the vehicle while chasing the fleeing miscreants, injuring her and her son. They have been identified as Kuldeep, a resident of Etawah district, and Suraj, a resident of Chaura village in Noida. He told that the police have recovered the mobile phone looted from the woman from the miscreants and further action is being taken.

The police took strict action in this matter and questioned the wife of the deceased. After which she confessed to the crime of killing her husband. She told that she had a love affair with Ajay Batham (24), a resident of Ferozepur village. When Manoj came to know, he was upset. The wife also told that she killed her husband along with her lover.

The accused wife told that she conspired with her lover Ajay to remove Manoj forever. Under which the crime was committed. Gave money to husband for drinking on Monday evening. When Manoj drank alcohol, she took him to the farm on the pretext of cutting fodder. Ajay was already present there. On getting Sandhya’s signal, Ajay attacked Manoj on the head with a stick. He got injured and fell on the ground. After this, after strangulating with a stick, attacked the neck and face with an iron saw and killed him. Leaving the dead body there, both went to their respective homes. Didn’t tell anyone anything.
