    Former Punjab assembly speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal joins BJP

    Charanjit Singh Atwal, former Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the presence of party national president JP Nadda, in Delhi.

    On April 19, Atwal resigned from the primary membership of Akali Dal.
    Atwal was born on 15 March 1937, was the Deputy Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha of India from 2004 to 2009.

    He represented the Phillaur constituency of Punjab in the 14th Lok Sabha and was a member of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). He was also the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly twice.

    West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday expressed her sorrow over the demise of former Punjab Chief Minister and veteran Akali Dal leader Parkash Singh Badal. The Trinamool Congress supremo described Badal as a mass leader of indomitable courage contributing immensely to the development of Punjab.

    “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Parkash Singh Badal, Former CM of Punjab. A true mass leader and a man of indomitable courage, he contributed immensely to the progress of his state. My heart goes out to his family and supporters during this time of grief,” she tweeted. Badal (95) died on Tuesday, after a brief illness at a private hospital in Mohali.

    PM Modi Pays Floral Tributes To Former Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid floral tributes to five-time Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal at the Shiromani Akali Dal office here.

    SAD patriarch Badal was admitted to the Fortis Hospital in Mohali on April 16 after he complained of uneasiness in breathing. He breathed his last around 8 pm Tuesday aged 95.

    After arriving in Chandigarh, Modi reached the SAD office accompanied by Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

    He laid a wreath on the mortal remains of Badal and then sat beside SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal. The prime minister was seen holding the hands of Sukhbir Singh Badal, expressing grief over the passing away of the SAD chief’s father.

    Modi stayed at the SAD office for a few minutes.

    The mortal remains of Parkash Singh Badal, who straddled the politics of Punjab for over seven decades, were kept at the party office here for a few hours for people and political leaders to pay their last respects.

    Immediately after Modi left, Badal’s body was taken to his native village in Muktsar where cremation will take place Thursday afternoon.

    Modi had on Tuesday described the demise of Badal as a “personal loss” and said he was a colossal figure of Indian politics who contributed greatly to the nation.

    “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Shri Parkash Singh Badal Ji. He was a colossal figure of Indian politics and a remarkable statesman who contributed greatly to our nation,” Modi had said in a tweet.

    Several leaders including Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, INLD supremo and former Haryana chief minister O P Chautala, INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala, former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and former Punjab CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, SAD leaders Bikram Singh Majithia, Prem Singh Chandumajra, Balwinder Singh Bhundar paid homage to the departed soul.

    CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has announced a public holiday on Thursday in honour of Shiromani Akali Dal patriarch and five-time Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, who passed away on April 25.

    Badal breathed his last at a private hospital near here at the age of 95. He had been suffering from various health issues for some time.

    Since the cremation of Badal is to be performed on Thursday, the state government has announced a public holiday for the day, officials told IANS.

    The last rites will be held at his ancestral village Badal in Muktsar district. A sea of people, comprising political leaders cutting across party lines and dignitaries, are expected to attend the cremation.

    Badal’s mortal remains will be placed for paying last respects at the party office in Chandigarh from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday. Later it will be transported to his ancestral village by road. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government has declared national mourning on Wednesday and Thursday following Badal’s demise.

    Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann mourned the loss and said the state had lost a towering figure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered his decades-long association with Badal and said his death was a personal loss to him. Badal also served as a Union Minister in the late 1970s.

    Terror attacks in Pakistan kill 293 people this year

    Rawalpindi: A total of 293 people have been killed and 521 others injured in 436 terrorist attacks in Pakistan since January this year, the military’s media wing ISPR said.

    In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, 192 people were killed and 330 injured in 219 incidents, whereas Balochistan reported 80 fatalities and 170 wounded persons in 206 attacks, said Director General (DG) of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry at a press briefing.

    A total of 21 people were killed and 21 others injured in 11 incidents in Punjab and Sindh provinces, he told reporters here.

    The DG added that this year, the security forces conducted 8,269 major and minor intelligence-based operations in which 1,535 terrorists were either killed or arrested.

    Moga: In a major breakthrough amid the continuing manhunt, ‘Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh was arrested by Punjab Police from the Moga district of Punjab, informed sources.

    Earlier on Saturday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah when asked about Amritpal Singh’s arrest and that he has been absconding for a long, said, “It may happen sometime. Earlier he used to roam freely, but now he cannot carry on with his activities.”

    Two more aides of the fugitive radical preacher and Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh were arrested at Mohali in Punjab, in a joint operation by Punjab and Delhi Police on April 18.
    On April 15, Punjab Police arrested his close aide Joga Singh from Sirhind in the Fatehgarh Sahib district.

    Another close aid of the pro khalistani leader, Papalpreet Singh was arrested on April 10, in an operation conducted by Punjab Police and its counter-intelligence unit.

    The radical leader had been declared a “fugitive” while he was on a run earlier in March.

    “Waris Punjab De’ chief Amritpal Singh has been declared a fugitive. His two cars were seized and gunmen nabbed. We also checked if the firearms of his security escorts had been procured legally. A case has been registered. Punjab Police have launched a manhunt for Amritpal Singh and we are hopeful that he will be arrested soon. A total of 78 people have been arrested so far and further searches and raids are underway,” Chahal said in an exclusive interview with ANI.

    Chandigarh (IANS) | The Punjab Police on Thursday solved the case of human sacrifice of a middle-aged woman with the arrest of two persons who tried to kill the woman under witchcraft to get rich. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that the arrested persons have been identified as Kuldeep Singh and Jasveer Singh, both residents of Fatehgarh Sahib.

    Balveer Kaur (50) was found injured in the fields near a canal in Ferozepur village on Wednesday morning. He is undergoing treatment at PGIMER, Chandigarh. Bhullar said that the accused were circus performers and used to perform cycle shows in villages. He met the victim through her son Dharampreet, who had befriended him eight months earlier.

    Fatehgarh Sahib’s SSP Ravjot Kaur Grewal said that both the accused, who aspired to become rich, came in contact with a ‘tantrik’ who asked them to give ‘human sacrifice’ of a woman. Grewal said the accused called Balveer Kaur on Tuesday on the pretext of taking her to a ‘Tantrik’ for worship, but instead took her to a deserted place in Ferozepur village, where they attacked her accidentally, causing He sustained severe injuries on his neck and other parts of his body.

    Grewal said, after receiving a tip-off from the villagers, the police started an investigation, following which both the accused were arrested.

    Amid speculation that the radical preacher is likely to surrender at Amritsar’s Golden Temple, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Parminder Singh Bhandal said last Saturday, “We are constantly working to ensure the safety and security of people in Amritsar.” Right now, we are focusing more on managing the traffic as Baisakhi is round the corner. If Amritpal wants to surrender, we are ready to help him do so as per the law.” (ANI)
