    Shimla Municipal Corporation Election: Chief Minister Sukhwinder Sukhu gave victory mantra to Congress candidates

    Shimla. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu held a major meeting with Congress candidates of all 34 wards before the start of the high-octane campaign for the Shimla Municipal Corporation elections. This meeting took place at Chief Minister’s residence Oak Over on Wednesday morning. In this, the Chief Minister gave the mantra of victory to all the Congress candidates. He told that in his short tenure of 100 days, his government has done many things to change the system. Old pension has been given to the employees and 3% dearness allowance has also been announced. The state government is going to take a decision soon regarding the arrears of the Pay Commission.

    The Chief Minister said that within these 100 days, the Chief Minister’s Drought Shelter Scheme has been launched for destitute children, while a policy to promote electric vehicles was launched in the state to protect the environment. He asked all the candidates to take this work of the government for 100 days among the people and on this basis votes should be sought.

    The Chief Minister also asked all the candidates to inform the people about the decision to make the attics in Shimla habitable. The attic floor with the roof of any building in the capital Shimla can now be used for living purposes. The state government has given its permission. This is also a big relief for the building owners stuck under the terms of NGT. The Chief Minister said that this information should also be given to the people on the pretext of campaigning for the Municipal Corporation elections.

    109 candidates filed papers for Shimla Municipal Corporation elections

    As many as 109 candidates have filed nomination papers for the upcoming Shimla Municipal Corporation elections. While 22 nominations were filed on Monday, 87 candidates showed up on the last day of filing the nominations today. The Shimla MC has 34 wards.

    The Congress has fielded 34 candidates, the BJP 35 (including a covering candidate from Krishnanagar ward), AAP 21, CPM four and others 15.

    As only 22 nominations were filed on the first two days, there was a sense of urgency among the candidates today. Accompanied by their supporters and prominent individuals of their respective parties, the candidates put up a brief show of strength before filing the nomination papers. Spelling out their plans and priorities, the candidates exuded confidence of making it to the House.

    The BJP candidates had the maximum former ministers and current and former MLAs to support them. The most prominent among them included former ministers Suresh Bhardwaj, Ram Lal Markanda, Gobind Singh Thakur and MLA Balbir Verma. From the Congress, Shimla (Urban) MLA Harish Janartha was present.

    The BJP and the Congress will have a direct fight in 10 wards, namely Kaithu, Annadale, Nabha, Majaith, Ram Bazaar Ganj, Jakhu, Sanjauli Chowk, Upper Dhalli, Lower Dhalli and Bhattakuffar ward. This could, however, change if some candidates withdraw their nomination.

    The maximum nominations (seven) were filed from the Krishna Nagar ward. The nominations will be scrutinised tomorrow, and the candidates will be able to withdraw their candidature on April 21.

    DC issued roster for Shimla Municipal Corporation elections

    The Deputy Commissioner (DC) today issued the roster for the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections, to be held later this year.

    The DC was appointed Administrator of the SMC after elections could not be held even on the completion of the term of the House last year. As the issue of delimitation of wards being challenged in the court, the elections to the oldest and most prestigious MC in the state could not be held on time.

    The previous BJP regime had enhanced the number of wards from 34 to 41 after holding a delimitation exercise that was challenged in the court by some councillors. The Congress had won the previous SMC poll and the prestige of the party would be at stake to ensure that it retains the biggest urban body of the state.

    As per the roster, out of 34 wards, 14 have been reserved for women. Three wards each have been reserved for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Castes (Women).

    The 14 wards reserved for women are Ruldu Bhatta, Kaithu, Totu, Majhat, Kachighatti, Tutikandi, Ram Bazaar Ganj, Lower Bazaar, Sanjauli Chowk, Lower Dhalli, Malyana, Panthaghatti, Kasumpti and New Shimla.

    The three wards reserved for SCs are Vikasnagar, Nabha and Annandale. The three wards reserved for SC (women) include Khalini, Krishnagara and Phagli.

    The remaining 14 wards are Bharari, Summer Hill, Boileauganj, Jakhu, Benmore, Engine Ghar, Upper Dhalli, Shanti Vihar, Bhattakuffar, Sangti, Chotta Shimla, Kangana Dhar, Pateog and Kanlog.
