Siddaramaiah to be Karnataka CM, Shivakumar his deputy

BENGALURU: A smiling Siddaramaiah who is at AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal’s residence in Delhi will head to the AICC office and meet with the Congress leaders and will head back to Bangalore a little past lunch. He is expected to arrive in Bangalore to a specially prepared welcome at the HAL Airport with banners and cutouts which have been meticulously prepared since last night.

The Congress CLP meeting is scheduled to be held at 7 pm where his leadership which has been confirmed by the central leadership will now receive the necessary stamp of approval from the legislators. Sources said Siddaramaiah’s leadership will be proposed by DK Shivakumar and the others will endorse it as a mark of unity.

Both leaders Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar will arrive together by special flight at the HAL airport and will be welcomed by the party leaders.

In the power-sharing, Siddaramaiah will become CM for the first two and half years and DK Shivakumar will hold the office for the next two and half years. As far as the ministries are concerned DK Shivakumar will get a lion’s share of ministries, he will receive 20 ministries while Siddaramaiah and his team will receive only 13 out of a 34-member cabinet.

It may be recalled that the All India Congress Committee on May 18, ending hours of deadlock selected Siddaramaiah as the 34th Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Officials at the PCC office were busy dialing the numbers of the Congress MLAs inviting them for the CLP that has been called at 7 pm this evening.

Meanwhile, preparations are also being carried out for the swearing-in of the CM and DCM that will happen on Saturday afternoon at the Kanteerava Stadium and invitations are going out .

Speaking about the breakthrough sources said the leaders were locked in a series of meetings with the central leadership to break the deadlock. Sources said each one of the issues raised regarding the executive leadership were ironed out threadbare to ensure there is no bitterness or residual ill feeling. The entire Congress central leadership stepped in to work a way out of the problem–Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, AICC president, Mallikarjun Kharge, General Secretary K C Venugopal, state incharge general secretary Randeep Surjewala.

Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar stick to claims for CM post

The Congress high command is faced with a daunting task to choose between former chief minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president DK Shivakumar as the new chief minister of Karnataka.

Sources privy to the happenings in Delhi said on Monday night that Siddaramiah was the likely CM. They said a decision had been taken and that an announcement would soon be made after holding discussions with Shivakumar, who had cancelled his Delhi visit on Monday citing ill-health.

However, the scene changed drastically on Tuesday with the arrival of Shivakumar in the national capital.
Both the leaders were adamant throughout the day and refused to back down from staking their respective claims for the top post.

The race for the top post heated up after Shivakumar reached Kharge’s residence in New Delhi a little after 5 pm and held talks with him for 30 minutes. Soon after Shivakumar’s departure, Siddaramaiah arrived at Kharge’s residence, and the two leaders held discussions for nearly an hour.

Sources said that Kharge sought opinions from both the leaders on their choices and the formation of the government. According to senior leaders, Shivakumar made a fresh push for the CM post during his meeting with Kharge, citing several reasons to validate his claim.

While he maintained that he rebuilt the party in the state, he also held Siddaramaiah responsible for the collapse of the government in 2019 when Congress ran a coalition with JDS. According to sources, he is said to have told Kharge that he would settle for nothing less than the CM’s post.

The secret ballot conducted in Bengaluru on Sunday night was also shown to both leaders. Siddaramaiah enjoys the support of a majority of newly-elected Congress MLAs.

According to sources in the know, at least 35 MLAs in the secret ballot had chosen to leave the decision on the chief minister choice to the party high command. The Congress high Command appears to be bidding for more time to placate Shivakumar to thwart any dissent within the party. Kharge on Wednesday is likely to meet more MLAs and stakeholders to thrash out a compromise formula.

Though the leadership has floated the idea of ‘rotational CM’, it is learnt that both the leaders are against it and are looking at a full five-year term. The day witnessed high-pitched political activities involving a series of meetings held at Kharge’s residence in the capital. The first meeting of the day was kicked off with former Congress President Rahul Gandhi getting into a huddle with Kharge, AICC leaders KC Venugopal and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala.

It was learnt that Rahul Gandhi put the onus on Karnataka’s Congress stalwart Kharge to pick between the two leaders as the CM. It may be interesting to note here that Shivakumar shares a good rapport with AI CC chief Kharge and had even claimed just before the assembly polls that he would be happy to work under Kharge as the CM.

While the Congress is wrestling with many challenges, the top leadership itself is divided in picking the chief minister choice. According to sources, while Sonia Gandhi — who is resting in Shimla — is said to be in favour of Shivakumar, Rahul Gandhi wants a better representation of Dalits, women, and backward classes in the state, whose clout Siddaramaiah enjoys.

The party high command is faced with weighing various caste permutations and combinations as it does not want to upset the applecart in the run-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, especial after Congress won a thumping victory at the recently conducted assembly polls wherein the party won 135 seats in the 224-member house. Whi le Siddharamaiah is largely viewed as a champion of social justice with pan-Karnataka appeal, Shivakumar enjoys popularity in urban pockets.

The day began with Rahul Gandhi getting into a huddle with Kharge, AICC leaders K C Venugopal and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Surjewala. It is learnt that Rahul put the onus on Kharge to take the call on CM-ship

  • Modi must remember he’s India’s PM, not Karnataka’s CM: Siddaramaiah

Modi must remember he’s India’s PM, not Karnataka’s CM: Siddaramaiah

Mysuru : Campaigning in different parts of his own Varuna assembly constituency on Thursday, May 4, Congress leader Siddaramaiah asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to remember that he is India’s PM and not Karnataka’s CM.

Siddaramaiah, who visited different parts of his own Varuna assembly constituency in Mysuru district accompanied by Kannada film stars Shivarajkumar and his wife Geetha Shivarajkumar and Nishwika Naidu said Modi is repeating whatever he said in each election and has nothing to speak about the ruling BJP’s achievements in the State.

“Modi and all other BJP leaders are saying that they will make Karnataka as the number 1 state and saying the same thing in every state during the elections but they conveniently forget the plight of the people,’’ he said and asked Modi to first revive the spirit of India and ensure that Karnataka is not subjected to continuous neglect and injustice.

Siddaramaiah said people of Karnataka and the Congress leaders know how to make the State number 1. “We know what happened in Gujarat under your tenure as chief minister and the so called Gujarat model. The malnutrition of women and children in Gujarat is enough to know what Gujarat model means as any state’s well-being can be judged from the condition of its women and children,’’ he said.

Repeating the criticism of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi over the prime minister crying over being abused 91 times instead of talking about development and how to make India and Karnataka prosperous, Siddaramaiah said: “Modi should stop crying in public and talking about himself and speak about what he has done for Karnataka during the last nine years of his rule when he is in the State for the next three days. This election is not about you but about the future of Karnataka.’’

The former chief ,inister reiterated his charge that Karnataka has suffered gross injustice during the last 9 years of Modi rule with the State getting meager grants despite contributing the maximum revenue to the country’s exchequer in the form of taxes and cess collections.

“Has Modi developed the country and solved its problems during the last 9 years of his rule? As many as 98% of the programmes launched by the BJP involve contribution of the people in addition to their tax burden and inflation they are subjected to,’’ he said.

The deterioration of India’s standing among the world’s nations can be gauged from the fact that the hunger index has slumped from 55 in 2014 to 107 in 2022-23, India has fallen in gender parity rank from 114 to 135 among 146 countries. The freedom of press ranking has come down from 140 in 2014 to 161 now, the law and order standing has falledn from 66 in 2016 to 77 in 2022, in the human development index the decline is from 130 2014 to 132 in 2022, the per capita income at constant prices has seen a mere increase from Rs 72,805 in 2011-12 to Rs 98,000 in 2022-23 or a meagre per capita increase of Rs15,000 during the last nine years and the debt burden on individuals has increased from Rs 57,000 in 2014 to a whopping Rs 1.90 lakh in 2023.

The Congress leader challenged Modi to a public debate on his government’s nine-year performance as well as the BJP rule in the State.

He accused the BJP leaders of storming Karnataka for making the State as its cash cow and ATM through 40% commission, over which Modi has remained silent as against his rantings against the opposition parties.

“The people of Karnataka are silently watching the loot and also the games to destroy Nandini brand of milk and its products to benefit the croony capitalists of BJP,’’ he added.

Karnataka: Yediyurappa slams Siddaramaiah over promise to hike reservation limit

Bengaluru: Reacting sharply to Congress leader Siddaramaiah claiming that his party would increase the reservation limit in Karnataka from 50 per cent to 75 per cent if voted to power in the upcoming Assembly elections, former chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Wednesday said the “poll promise” would never be met as the prinicipal opposition party in the state was headed for defeat.

Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, the veteran Ligayat leader said, “Since he [Siddaramaiah] is going to lose miserably, the question of increasing the reservation limit in the state does not arise.”

“We [BJP] are going to do everything in our power to form the government,” he added.

Siddaramaiah, also a former chief minister who is eyeing a fresh term in post after the May 10 Assembly polls, had tweeted, “The Congress party is committed to increasing the reservation limit from 50 per cent to 75 per cent and extend reservation to all castes based on their population.”
