Odisha CM Opens Air Ticketing to Singapore, Bangkok

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today opened the air ticketing to Singapore and Bangkok facilitating people of Odisha travelling to these south-east Asian cities at a fair price.

With this, Odisha is now a pioneer and first in the country to support and commence the international air connectivity in the interest of the public.

Indigo airlines will commence direct international flights to Singapore as well as Bangkok from 3rd June, 2023. Earlier, direct flights ticketing was launched by the Chief Minister to Dubai which will start from May 15.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister Patnaik said that the initiative will promote job opportunities for the youth of Odisha, open up tourism potential of the state and provide boost to IT and ITES sectors in the State.

He said that it is a momentous occasion for all of us today as Indigo opens ticketing to Singapore & Bangkok from Bhubaneswar. Recently, I had also inaugurated the ticketing to Dubai. With this, Odisha is now connected to the top cosmopolitan Asian cities– opening a whole new world of opportunities for our people.

He further said that in last few years, the aviation traffic in Odisha has seen immense growth. Though the domestic flight connectivity has seen a noticeable improvement, Odisha Government has come forward to make sizeable contribution to ensure direct international flight connectivity between Bhubaneswar and world-class destinations to meet the people’s aspirations, he added.

He hoped that these international flights would provide tourists more convenience and affordable travel options while also encouraging trade and tourism.

He thanked the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India and Indigo Airlines for the support.

Chief Secretary PK Jena, Secretary to CM 5T VK Pandian, Senior Officers of Govt of Odisha, and officials from Indigo were present.

Principal Secretary, Commerce and Transport Smt Usha Padhee presented the welcome address.

It may be recalled here that in the current year budget, Govt. of Odisha has made the budget of Rs. 100 crore to support the viability gap funding. Due to such support, international travelling has become affordable for every passenger travelling from Odisha. It is to inform that, online reservations for Indigo’s initial flights from Bhubaneswar to Dubai have received an incredibly encouraging response. These flights are beginning from 15th May, 2023.

Singapore and Bangkok will be the threshold to the entire south-eastern Asian region while connectivity to Dubai will open the gateway to the Gulf, Europe, and Western countries making world tour accessible, convenient & affordable for the people of Odisha. It is well recognised that aviation sector has a multiplier effect on the local economy and growth. International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) study shows that the air connectivity has an economic multiplier of 3.1 and employment multiplier of 6.1.

Odisha is endowed with natural resources and forestry. The state capital is just 2 to 2.5 hours flying distant from all major cities of the country. Man hanged for smuggling 1 kg of cannabis in Singapore

Singapore (ANI): Singapore, on Wednesday, executed a man convicted of trafficking one kilogram of cannabis, ignoring international calls to abolish capital punishment.
Tangaraju Suppiah, a 46-year-old Singaporean, was hanged early on Wednesday in Changi Prison and the family have received a death certificate, his sister Leelavathy Suppiah told CNN.
Tangaraju was first sentenced to death in 2018 for “abetting the trafficking of more than one kilogram of cannabis (1,017.9 grams),” according to a statement from the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB). The court found he was in phone communication with two other men caught trying to smuggle cannabis into Singapore.
Previous appeals against his conviction and death sentence were dismissed by the courts in 2019 while petitions for presidential clemency were also unsuccessful, CNB added.
“Tangaraju was accorded full due process under the law and had access to legal counsel throughout the process,” CNB’s statement said while describing capital punishment as “part of Singapore’s comprehensive harm prevention strategy.”
Notably, Tangaraju’s sentence was lambasted by rights groups and campaigners for its severity at a time when many other nations, including neighbouring countries, have adopted a more lenient approach towards drugs and capital punishment.
While cannabis has been legalized in a growing number of nations worldwide, Singapore maintains some of the world’s harshest drug laws and its government remains adamant that capital punishment works to deter drug traffickers and must remain in place to maintain public safety.

Tangaraju’s sister Leelavathy spoke of her brother’s anguish and determination before his death sentence was carried out.
“Even from inside prison, he wanted to fight for his innocence,” she told CNN. “He believed that there would be a fair trial and wanted to prove his innocence – every step of the way.”
Last year Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis following years of campaigning by activists on the ground.
Meanwhile, Malaysia, Singapore’s closest neighbor, passed sweeping legal reforms earlier this month to remove the mandatory death penalty and trimmed the number of offenses, including drug crimes, punishable by death – a move welcomed by rights defenders.
But the Singapore government has continued to resist calls for reform, carrying out eleven executions last year alone, all for drug-related trafficking offenses.
Under the law, anyone caught trafficking, importing or exporting certain quantities of illegal drugs like methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine or cannabis products receives the mandatory death sentence.
“Singapore adopts a zero-tolerance stance against drugs and applies a multi-pronged approach to combat drugs,” the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement responding to international criticism of Tangaraju’s execution.
“The death penalty is an essential component of Singapore’s criminal justice system and has been effective in keeping Singapore safe and secure.” (ANI)

India and Singapore can work together to create workforce of the future: Union Minister

Bhubaneswar: There is immense scope for India and Singapore to work together to achieve mutual priorities, particularly towards preparing a future-ready workforce, said Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday.

Addressing the workshop on “Future of Work: Skill Architecture and Governance Models of India and Singapore”, organised on the sidelines of the G20 3rd EDWG meeting in Bhubaneswar, the minister said skills development and knowledge collaboration is an important element of the strategic partnership.

“Skilling is lifelong. In next quarter century, 25% of the global working population will come from India. Until and unless we skill, re-skill and up-skill our young demography and prepare them for Future of Work, we cannot fulfil global responsibilities,” he added.

Pradhan said the joint workshop between India and Singapore will focus on leveraging the expertise and knowledge of Singapore and facilitate mutual sharing of experiences for addressing obstacles to skilling and further transforming the Indian skills ecosystem.

In the context of Future of Work, India and Singapore are engaging holistically to deliberate on development of new curriculum for skill, framework for skilling ecosystem in higher education and compulsory apprenticeship and frameworks for lifelong skilling.

Simon Wong, High Commissioner of the Republic of Singapore to India, in his address mentioned the close ties that Singapore has with India. “Singapore is the first country to establish linkages with UPI through their fast payment system PayNow. Also, a few days ago, Indian rocket PSLV placed two Singapore satellites into the orbit,” he said.

He said there is a huge opportunity to extend this cooperation to the space of skilling. Singapore follows a skilling philosophy of leaving no one behind, training for decent jobs and building a confident nation because decent job increases the confidence of the individuals and their families, he added.

Melissa Khoo, Deputy Secretary (Higher Education and Skills, Ministry of Education Singapore); Secretary, Higher Education, K. Sanjay Murthy; Secretary, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Atul Kumar Tiwari; Secretary, School Education and Literacy Sanjay Kumar and senior officials of Ministry of Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship attended the workshop.
