    Sonia Gandhi condoles death of passengers in Odisha train accident

    New Delhi (IANS) | United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday condoled the death of several passengers in Odisha’s Balasore train accident and expressed her condolences to the bereaved families. In a statement, the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) president said, “The horrific train accident in Odisha has pained me the most. I express my deepest sympathies and condolences to all the bereaved families.

    261 people were killed in a train accident on Friday evening near Bahanaga Bazar railway station in Odisha. More than 900 people have also been injured and many are admitted in hospitals.

    Meanwhile, Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal said party chief Mallikarjun Kharge had informed Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and AICC in-charge A.K. Chella Kumar to immediately visit the accident site in Odisha to take stock of the situation and supervise the relief efforts being carried out by Congress workers and frontal organisations.

    Earlier, Gurdeep Singh Sappal, AICC in-charge-administration and coordinator of the Congress President’s office, tweeted, “Resignation is expected in such cases not only on moral grounds.” Resignation is also a means to ensure that those in power and responsible for the accident do not influence such ‘high level enquiry’. That is why it has been established convention that all officers in the chain of command are suspended and ministers resign.

    Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her daughter and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived in Shimla on Friday on a private visit.

    They were welcomed by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu at Kalyani helipad in the Chhabra suburb of the city.

    The chief minister presented Sonia Gandhi a memoir of traditional musical instruments.They would stay at Vadra’s house at Chhabra in the vicinity of the Rashtrapati Niwas ‘The Retreat’.

    The house, which is a blend of English and hill architecture, has grey slate roofs and is located amidst serene surroundings of thick deodar forests.

    Overwhelmed with the thumping victory his party has registered, Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar broke down on Saturday while remembering the time he spent in jail.

    “I can’t forget Sonia Gandhi visiting me in jail…when BJP people put me in jail,” Shivakumar said, sobbing and almost choking.

    Shivakumar said he “chose to be” in jail, a reference to a claim he had made in the past that he opted for imprisonment against the BJP’s offer of making him deputy chief minister.
    In September-October 2019, Shivakumar spent 50 days in Tihar Jail in connection with a money laundering case.
    Shivakumar said he had assured Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge that Karnataka will be delivered.

    “People have trusted us with a majority. People have reposed faith in us. It’s a collective leadership that has worked. I thank all my leaders, including Siddaramaiah, and MLAs,” Shivakumar said.

    A long-time Man Friday of the Congress, Shivakumar was appointed to head the party in Karnataka in March 2020. He is a chief ministerial candidate.

    Shivakumar said he would visit Kanakapura to collect his election certificate and return to the city later in the evening.

    New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday knocked on the door of the Election Commission against remarks made by former Congress president on ‘sovereignty of Karnataka’. The remark has triggered a massive political storm in the run-up to the Karnataka assembly election, scheduled to be held on May 10. Reports said that a delegation of the BJP went to the poll panel office in the national capital.
    “She (Sonia Gandhi) deliberately used the word sovereignty. Congress manifesto is the agenda of the ‘Tukde-Tukde’ gang and hence they are using such words. We hope EC will take action against this anti-national act”, Union minister Bhupender Yadav told reporters.

    SONIA GANDHI’s SOVEREIGNTY REMARK
    While addressing a rally in the Hubbali district of Karnataka, Congress’ official Twitter handle posted,”CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji sends a strong message to 6.5 crores Kannadigas: “The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity.”
    Later Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders lambasted the grand old party over the remark. Prime Minister Modi accused the party of openly advocating for “separating” Karnataka from India.
    Referring to Sonia’s speech in a tweet, the party said Gandhi, who is the Congress Parliamentary Party, Chairperson, “sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas”. It also posted pictures of Gandhi speaking at the public meeting.
    Addressing the public meeting in Mysuru district, he accused them of secretly meeting foreign diplomats who hate India, repeatedly indulging in activities that insult India’s sovereignty and said they are not ashamed of it.

    New Delhi (IANS) | Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who has so far stayed away from campaigning in Karnataka due to health reasons, will address a public meeting in Hubli on Saturday. This will be his first public meeting in the poll-bound state.


    Meanwhile, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are campaigning aggressively in the southern state, which will vote on May 10. Sonia Gandhi had joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Mandya, Karnataka on October 6 last year and was walking with Rahul Gandhi.
    She is staying away from public events these days due to health reasons. The Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on March 2 this year following fever. He had got Kovid-19 in June last year.
    Earlier, BJP leader Basangouda Patil Yatnal targeted Sonia Gandhi. He called the Congress leader a poison girl and an agent of Pakistan and China. The Congress had condemned the BJP leader’s remarks.


    Elections to the 224-member assembly in Karnataka are scheduled for May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13. The ruling BJP is facing a tough fight from the Congress, which has sidelined the saffron party on several issues including corruption.
    The Congress on Tuesday released its manifesto and promised to repeal all unjust laws and other anti-people laws passed by the BJP government in the state within a year of coming to power. The Congress has launched Griha Jyoti (200 units of free electricity); Griha Lakshmi – Rs 2,000 per month to each female head of the household; and Anna Bhagya – each person from a BPL family has been promised 10 kg of food grains of their choice (among rice, ragi, jowar, bajra).


    It also promised to take strong and decisive action against individuals and organizations promoting hatred between communities on the basis of caste or religion. It said that if any organization like Bajrang Dal and PFI tried to spread hatred, it would ban them.

    Bengaluru (IANS) | A day after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a ‘poisonous snake’, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA in Karnataka on Friday dubbed former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi as ‘Vish Kanya’. BJP MLA from Vijayapura constituency Basangowda Patil Yatnal asked Kharge, if PM Modi is poisonous snake, then Sonia Gandhi must be Vish Kanya? Being the president of the national party, Kharge does not know how to respect the Prime Minister.

    Reacting to this, Karnataka unit Congress President D.K. Shivkumar said, no one knows what will happen to Yatnal if he uses such low level language. Shivakumar said, the Congress will not tolerate Yatnal’s remarks. BJP leaders should apologize for this. PM Modi and Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai should also apologize and Yatnal should be expelled from the party.

    The Congress leader said that it is a bad habit of BJP leaders to make statements against the Nehru-Gandhi family. Our strength will be known on May 13, he said.

    Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shobha Karandlaje and Karnataka Higher Education Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan has said that he does not agree with Yatnal’s statements.
