    Ninth evacuation plane from Sudan arrives in UAE

    ABU DHABI: Four evacuation planes carrying 253 nationals from several countries have arrived in the UAE over the past two days from Sudan, which has experienced clashes since mid-April, bringing the total number of planes arriving from Sudan to nine.

    The UAE prioritised the evacuation of the most vulnerable groups, including the sick, children, the elderly, and women.

    In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MoFAIC) confirmed the success of the evacuation operation, which has been carried out by the UAE as part of its humanitarian efforts and commitment to strengthening global cooperation and solidarity, and in continuation of its humanitarian approach based on providing protection for civilians and facilitating aid and assistance to countries in times of need.

    The Ministry affirmed the UAE’s commitment to working with its partners and the international community to achieve all that serves the interests of the Sudanese people, stressing the importance of intensifying efforts aimed at a ceasefire, a return to the political framework and dialogue, and advancing in the transitional phase to reach the desired political stability and security in Sudan.

    The UAE continues to provide hosting and care services to the evacuees after their evacuation and stay in the city of Port Sudan.

    Moreover, the UAE has hosted nationals from approximately 26 different countries after being evacuated on these planes, which have carried 997 people since 29 April. The UAE has provided all necessary care services while they are in the UAE prior to returning to their home countries.

    Rescue mission evacuates 36 Australians from Sudan

    CANBERRA: An air force mission has successfully evacuated 36 Australians and their families from conflict-ravaged Sudan, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said on Wednesday.

    Wong confirmed that the group was taken from Sudan to Cyprus in the early hours of the morning on board a plane from the Australian Defense Force (ADF), reports Xinhua news agency.

    “Unfortunately, we still have Australians on the ground, and we’ll continue to engage through our consular team with the Australians who are on the ground, and I urge people to make sure they are registered,” Wong told the local media.

    “This brings to, I think 191 Australians that we’ve assisted or have been able to secure passage out of the country since the crisis began.”

    She said that the government was hopeful of launching further evacuation flights but nothing could be guaranteed amid a “worsening” security situation in the African country.

    “The security situation in Sudan is very dangerous, and it is volatile, and as you know we have been doing all we can to assist Australians with the support of our partners, bearing in mind we don’t have people on the ground in an embassy in Sudan,” said Wong.

    A growing number of countries have evacuated citizens from Sudan since fierce clashes broke out between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on April 15.The deadly clashes have so far killed 550 people and injured 4,926 others, according to the latest figures released by Sudan’s Ministry of Health.

    Over 6,000 people enter Ethiopia from violence-hit Sudan

    ADDIS ABABA (Ethiopia): More than 6,000 people have entered Ethiopia from the violent fighting in neighbouring Sudan, according to local officials. In a statement, the West Gondar zone communication office in Ethiopia’s northern region of Amhara said the fleeing people are from 42 different countries, including 941 Ethiopian nationals who were previously living in Sudan, reports Xinhua news agency.

    The statement said the number of fleeing people the zone currently has is only up to April 29, with plans already underway to designate a specific refugees’ accommodation site if the crisis continues to expand.

    The statement also said local officials are working together with the International Organization for Migration and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society to help with the health, transportation, nutritional, and water needs of the refugees.

    The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 334,000 people have been displaced inside Sudan since the conflict erupted more than two weeks ago.

    The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimates that more than 100,000 refugees have fled to neighbouring countries. Most are Sudanese refugees arriving in Chad and Egypt and refugees from South Sudan returning to their homes, the UNHCR said. The refugees are mainly women and children.

    Brutal fighting erupted in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on April 15 and swiftly escalated in different parts of the country. The ongoing fighting is between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Both sides have accused each other of initiating the conflict. The deadly clashes have so far killed 550 people and injured 4,926 others, according to the latest figures released by Sudan’s Ministry of Health.

    Over 200 Gujarat residents return home from Sudan under Operation Kaveri

    AHMEDABAD: More than 200 Gujarat residents from the strife-ridden African nation of Sudan returned home on Tuesday. As part of Operation Kaveri, the Government of India organised a special flight carrying 231 evacuees, which arrived at Sardar Patel International Airport here. Among them, 208 were from Gujarat.

    Upon their arrival, Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, greeted the individuals at the airport. Last week, under Operation Kaveri, 56 Gujaratis had returned to Mumbai airport in the first round.

    A medical team was arranged for 10 ailing persons, and 15 additional counters were set up to expedite the immigration process. The government also organised food for the evacuees. A total of 360 Gujaratis have been brought back from Sudan through Operation Kaveri.

    According to MoS Harsh Sanghavi, of the 231 evacuees who landed at SVPI airport, 208 were from Gujarat, 13 from Punjab, and 10 from Rajasthan. He added that the state government, in coordination with the Centre, had arranged for five air-conditioned Volvo buses for those wishing to travel to Rajkot.

    India brought home another batch of 229 people today under its mission ” Operation Kaveri” to evacuate stranded Indians from violence in Sudan. The fresh batch of evacuees arrived in Bengaluru, a day after 365 people returned from the African country to Delhi. “#Operationkaveri One more flight brings back 220 passengers to Bengaluru, “External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar wrote on Twitter. Under the evacuation mission, 754 people arrived in India in two batches on Friday. The total number of Indians who have been brought back home from Sudan now stands at 1,954, according to official data.

    The Indians were brought back from the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah where India has set up a transit camp for the evacuees. The first batch of 360 evacuees returned to New Delhi in a commercial plane on Wednesday. The second batch of 246 Indian evacuees arrived in Mumbai in a C17 Globemaster aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Thursday.

    Under “Operation kaveri”, India has been taking its citizens in buses from the conflict zones of Khatoum and other troubled areas to Port Sudan from where they are being taken to Jeddah in the IAF’s heavy lift transport aircraft and the Indian navy’s ships. From Jeddah, the Indians are being brought back home in either commercial flight or IAF’s aircraft.

    India has set up separate control rooms in Jeddah and Port Sudan, and the Indian embassy in Khartoum has been coordinating with them, besides being in touch with the headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in Delhi.

    Sudan has been witnessing deadly fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group that has reportedly left around 400 people dead. Jaishankar announced the launch of “Operation Kaveri” on Monday to bring back stranded Indians from the African country.

    Ankara (IANS) | Turkey’s defense ministry said on Friday that its rescue plane was fired upon upon arrival in conflict-torn Sudan, although there were no reports of injuries. A ministry statement said shots were fired at a Turkish C-130 plane landing at Wadi Sidna airport outside Sudan’s capital Khartoum, Xinhua news agency reported. The plane landed safely, the statement said, adding that no injuries were reported to the crew.
    The aircraft has been parked for inspection. Turkey has been carrying out evacuation operations for its citizens in Sudan since last Sunday, where fierce fighting broke out between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF). The Sudanese military accused the RSF of firing on the Turkish evacuation aircraft, while the RSF denied firing on the aircraft.

    BHOPAL: A 26-year-old Bhopal businessman who was stuck in conflict-ridden Sudan, reached his home, Bhopal safely on Thursday.

    The businessman, Jayant Kewlani, a resident of Sant Hiradaram Nagar (Bairagarh) in the city, had gone to Sudan for a business meeting and he was stuck in the fight that began between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the capital Khartoum and its surroundings on April 15.

    As soon as Jayant reached his home, the family members became quite happy and welcomed him with a bouquet.

    The family members and Jayant extended their gratitude to the central government as well as to the state government.

    Speaking to ANI, Jayant said, “I had gone for work last month on March 4 and was scheduled to return on April 20. I used to live in the centre of Khartoum area in Sudan. There was a military camp right in front where the fighting was going on. I was imprisoned in the room itself due to the war.”

    “After all, with the efforts of our government, I have come back to my home. I thank the central government, the state government, and the media for their support. I am very happy after coming back home,” he added.

    Notably, Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021, when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government and declared a state of emergency in what political forces called a “coup.”

    In a recent development, warring factions in Sudan have agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire on Monday after the US and Saudi Arabia mediated the truce while countries are engaged in evacuating their citizens from the country.

    India has launched ‘Operation Kaveri’ to bring back Indians stranded in conflict-hit Sudan.

    Earlier, the third IAF C-130J from Port Sudan arrived in Jeddah. V Muraleedharan tweeted, “Third IAF C-130J from Port Sudan arrives in Jeddah, glad to welcome 136 Indians who were on board. #OperationKaveri will continue till we rescue all Indians who want to come back home.”

    Delhi: “It was like we were on a deathbed,” recalled a relieved Sukhvinder Singh from Haryana as he arrived at the Delhi airport from Saudi Arabia on Wednesday night after being evacuated from strife-torn Sudan.

    In his mid-40s, the engineer was among the first batch of 360 Indian nationals who returned home under India’s ‘Operation Kaveri’ evacuation mission.

    Singh, a native of Faridabad in Haryana, recalled his ordeal in Sudan and said he was “still very scared”.

    NEW DELHI: India on Monday launched ‘Operation Kaveri’ to evacuate its nationals from violence-hit Sudan.

    External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India’s ships and aircraft are set to bring the Indians back home. ”Operation Kaveri gets underway to bring back our citizens stranded in Sudan. About 500 Indians have reached Port Sudan. More on their way,” Jaishankar tweeted.

    ”Our ships and aircraft are set to bring them back home. Committed to assist all our brethren in Sudan,” he said.

    India on Sunday said it has positioned two transport aircraft of the IAF in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah and a naval ship at a key port in Sudan as part of its contingency plans to evacuate the stranded Indians.

    The government had on Friday said it was focusing on the safety of over 3,000 Indian citizens presently located throughout Sudan. Sudan has been witnessing deadly fighting between the country’s army and a paramilitary group for the last 11 days that has reportedly left around 400 people dead.

    31 Indian nationals belonging to Karnataka are currently stranded in Sudan. On April 15, Sudan awoke to the sound of explosions and gunfire, the culmination of a weeks-long power struggle between two generals who will seize power in the country in 2021 following a military coup.
    The two generals – Abdel Fattah al-Burhan who heads Sudan’s army and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) – are former allies.
    The two joined forces and worked together to topple former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and played a key role in the 2021 military coup.
    However, talks to integrate the RSF into Sudan’s military as part of a plan to restore civilian rule in the country turned hostile over who would command whom in the new regime.
