Tamil Nadu CM Stalin supports Kejriwal on ordinance

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Thursday accused the Centre of creating a crisis in the non-BJP ruled states and said that the ruling DMK would strongly oppose the Central ordinance on control over administrative services in the national capital.

“The Centre is creating a crisis to the Aam Aadmi Party and is preventing a duly elected government from functioning independently. Despite the Supreme Court verdict in favour of the AAP government, the Centre brought the ordinance. The DMK will strongly oppose it,” Stalin, who is president of the DMK, told reporters outside his Alwarpet residence here.

Flanked by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, Stalin described Kejriwal as his “good friend” and said the discussion between them on opposing the ordinance was fruitful.

“The Chief Ministers in the non-BJP ruled states and also the political party leaders should extend their support in opposing the ordinance,” Stalin urged. This sort of healthy discussion among the opposition parties should continue to protect the democracy in the country, he said. Accusing the BJP-led government of bringing the ordinance nullifying the Supreme Court order, Kejriwal, who air-dashed to Chennai and sought Stalin’s support, said the DMK agreed to strongly oppose it and stand by AAP government and the people of Delhi.

“This ordinance should be collectively defeated in the Parliament as it is undemocratic, against the federal structure and unconstitutional,” he said and termed the coming together of opposition parties to defeat the ordinance as semi-finals to the 2024 Lok Sabha election.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the DMK government had to put up a fight against a Governor who not only refrained from passing the Assembly bills but also did not read out the speech prepared by the state government.

“I am facing similar problems in my state. I had to move the Supreme Court to call a Budget session because the Governor wasn’t allowing it,” Mann said and added, “we seek the DMK’s support to save democracy.” The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo has been reaching out to leaders of non-BJP parties to garner support against the ordinance so that the Centre’s bid to replace it through a bill is defeated when it is brought in Parliament.

Malik Khap supported former Governor Satpal Malik

Representatives of the Satgama Malik khap today expressed their solidarity with the former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satpal Malik, with a seven-member committee set to meet him in Delhi on Monday.

This was decided at the meeting of members of the Satgama Malik khap, held in the main chaupal of Ugrakheri village of the district on Sunday.

Members of the khap, including social, political and other forums from seven villages of Malik Khap, Garhi, Nangal Kheri, Risalu, Ugrakheri, Nimbri, Rajakheri, Kutana and Kurar villages, participated in the panchayat today.

Sarup Singh Malik of Nimbri village and Rajkumar Malik, president, Satgama Malik Khap, were also present at the social panchayat of the Malik khap. All members extended their support to the former Governor in the panchayat.

Bintu Malik of Ugrakheri village said the former Governor had supported the farmers and also raised the farmers’ issues, but a summon had been served on him for April 28, he said. All members have extended their support to the former Governor.

An eight-member committee, with a member from each village of Maliks, would go to meet him over the issue, he added. The members, after holding a meeting with the former Governor, would decide the next course of action for April 28, Malik said.

‘Panchayat’ in support of Satyapal Malik

Residents of Hisawada and Dhikoli villages in Baghpat district, western Uttar Pradesh, have threatened a special “panchayat” soon “to warn the Centre to stop atrocities against Satya Pal Malik or prepare to witness a state-wide protest”.

“We shall hold panchayats in Hisawada, the former governor’s (Malik’s) ancestral village, and Dhikoli, where he had studied at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Inter College,” Anu Malik, vice-president of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan, a farmers’ and workers’ body, said.

“The residents of these villages (17km from each other) have an emotional attachment to him and will not allow anybody to harass him just because of his uprightness.”

Malik, who recently raised grave questions about the 2019 Pulwama terror attack and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s purported response that evening, has been summoned by the CBI to provide “clarifications” relating to a corruption racket he had earlier flagged.

Supporters of the former Jammu and Kashmir governor staged sit-ins at two Delhi police stations on Saturday after being disallowed from congregating at a south Delhi park. Malik has said that similar shows of support will be held in Rajasthan and Haryana too.

He had earlier publicly suggested, without mentioning names, that “they (the Centre)” would be in trouble “if they touch me” because “I have a strong community (Jat)” and “solidarity with farmers”.

A large number of Malik’s supporters from Baghpat, located in Delhi’s backyard, had set off for the national capital on Saturday when a rumour about Malik having been arrested during the standoff with the police began spreading. They turned back midway after learning that the former governor was back home.

Om Veer Dhaka, a Rashtriya Lok Dal leader from Baghpat, said: “We will stand by Malik if the government tries to suppress his voice. We will be part of the panchayat to be held in Hisawada and Dhikoli.”

Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni said: “Malik had called khap (traditional village council) leaders and some farmers for lunch at his residence in Delhi. However, he realised that the space at his residence was not large enough and so shifted the venue to a nearby park. Some cops came and unnecessarily tried to stop us from holding any such event there.”

Malik had told The Wire journalist Karan Thapar in a recent interview that when, as then Jammu and Kashmir governor, he had blamed the 2019 Pulwama massacre on the Centre’s own lapses, Modi had told him “tum abhi chup raho”. Malik had added that the Prime Minister “does not hate corruption very much” and is “ill-informed”.

In the same interview, he had reiterated allegations of corruption involving the BJP, which he claimed Modi was aware of. He named a business house, a former Jammu and Kashmir minister, and an RSS leader in connection with his allegations.

The CBI wants to question him in connection with one of these corruption allegations.

  • Initiative announced to support education of 200 urban poor girls

Initiative announced to support education of 200 urban poor girls

A unique program called “Enlight 2.0” has been introduced by the Commissionerate police in Odisha to ensure that no girl child is denied the opportunity to receive an education. They hope to promote the education of young girls from economically or socially underprivileged neighbourhoods with this programme. The program would identify 200 females from five slum regions in the initial phase, giving leverage towards equitable chances.

The Odisha Commissionerate Police will begin a campaign to assist education for girls who are the offspring of rag pickers and those from economically disadvantaged groups.

200 girls from five urban slum areas—Sikharchandi Nagar, Sikharchandi Nagar Muslim, Saibanaphula, Tarini, and Patra—would be enrolled in the first phase. As part of the plan, learning centres have been established in each slum.

The designated female students in classes five through eight will also receive the proper educational support. Volunteers would work at the centres every day for an hour in the morning and two hours in the evening, instructing students in a wide variety of courses, including math, science, and English.

Additionally, they would be coordinating plans to advise parents to keep their kids in school. Previous research revealed that although rag pickers’ daughters attended public schools, they still encountered difficulties because their parents could not afford to send them to private institutions.

This was one of the many factors that forced socially backward cultures to stop educating their girl offspring. They intend to improve the graph of girl kids attending school once more by addressing this professionally with the aid of the school’s counsellors.
