    President Murmu announces relaxation of OCI card norms for Indian expatriates in Suriname

    New Delhi (IANS) | President Draupadi Murmu has announced that India has increased the eligibility criteria for OCI card from fourth to sixth generation. The President is on a visit to Suriname. He made the announcement after witnessing a cultural festival in the capital Paramaribo on Monday to mark 150 years of the arrival of Indians in Suriname.

    He said that the OCI card can be seen as an important link in their 150-year-old relationship with India.

    The President urged the members of the Indian diaspora to continue their efforts to maintain their ties with India.

    President Murmu said that at a time when Suriname is celebrating the heritage of its ancestors and its ties with India, India stands with Suriname in solidarity and reverence.

    Murmu further noted that both Suriname and India have made efforts to rebuild their economies and social systems after long periods of colonial rule.

    This experience has created a sense of solidarity between the two countries.

    The first ship named Lalla Rukh reached Suriname on June 5, 1873 carrying 452 Indian laborers.

    Most of the laborers were from eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

    New Delhi (IANS) | President Draupadi Murmu left for Suriname and Serbia in the early hours of Sunday. On the first leg of her visit, President Murmu will hold talks with Suriname leaders and meet a cross section of the Indian diaspora in Paramaribo from June 4 to 6.

    According to media reports, it is being said that this visit will further strengthen the deep ties between India and Suriname.

    President Murmu has visited Suriname at the invitation of Suriname President Chandrikaprasad Santokhi. During the visit, she will have an exclusive interaction with Santokhi and will also participate in a number of activities.

    Apart from this, President Murmu will visit Serbia on June 7 at the invitation of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

    President Murmu’s First State Visit From June 4 To Suriname, Serbia

    President Droupadi Murmu will pay a visit to Suriname and Serbia from June 4 to 9, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday. These will be her first State visits after assuming office in July 2022.

    The President will be visiting Paramaribo, Suriname, from June 4-6 at the invitation of Chandrikapersad Santokhi, President of the Republic of Suriname, the MEA said.

    On the second leg of her visit, President Murmu will pay a to the Republic of Serbia from June 7-9 at the invitation of Aleksandar Vucic, President of Serbia.
