  • The Kerala Story Screenings Cancelled In Tamil Nadu Over Law And Order Concerns

The Kerala Story Screenings Cancelled In Tamil Nadu Over Law And Order Concerns

Amid stinging reviews, allegedly poor box office collections as well as protests, theatres in Tamil Nadu stopped the screening of “The Kerala Story” in the State from May 7 onwards.

When this writer tried to book via online platforms for a Sunday afternoon show, it was not possible anymore.

President of Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association, M Subramaniam, popularly known as Tiruppur Subramaniam, confirmed the news that the few multiplexes that had shown the film had decided to withdraw it.

“The film was only shown in a few multiplexes owned by pan-India groups, mostly PVR. Locally-owned multiplexes had already decided not to show the film, as it did not have any popular stars. In Coimbatore for instance, there were two shows so far — one on Friday and one on Saturday. Even those did not do well. Given that, theatres decided that it was not worth going through the threat of protests and such,” added Subramaniam.

On April 6, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) staged a protest against the release of the film in Chennai. Seeman, the party’s coordinator, who is also actor and director, along with NTK cadres, had protested near Anna Nagar Arch.

Film industry tracker Sreedhar Pillai, who said he was planning to watch the film on Sunday, only to find out it was no longer shown, had also tweeted that the film multiplexes will stop screening “The Kerala Story”.

“The multiplex owners have cited potential law and order issues and lack of interest as reasons for the move,” said Pillai.

Meanwhile in Kerala, according to the distributors, E4 Entertainment, 22 screens across the State are screening the films. Although the theatre owners in Kerala had told Press Trust of India before the release of the film that they were not worried about the adverse publicity, on the day of release, on May 5, a few theatres, including PVR Cinemas at Lulu Mall and Oberon Mall in Kochi, decided not to screen the film. When contacted, a spokesperson for PVR Cinemas had declined to comment.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu is likely to witness another spell of rain from next week due to a low-pressure area that is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal on May 7, and concentrate into a depression the following day, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) said on Friday. However, the maximum temperature is expected to increase gradually by two to four degree Celsius for the next two days in isolated places of TN.

A cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Southeast Bay of Bengal on May 6. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around May 7. It is likely to concentrate into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Monday.

“The system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal.

“Initially, light to moderate rain is predicted over Tamil Nadu, because usually when the cyclonic storm moves northwards there is less chance of rain for TN. However, when the system further intensifies, and the direction changes towards the coastal area, heavy rain is likely to occur in the state,” said P Senthamarai Kannan, Scientist E, RMC, Chennai.

Additionally, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea until the system over the sea moves from the Bay of Bengal. As squally weather with wind speed reaching 40 kmph to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail over Comorin area, Gulf of Mannar, Tamil Nadu coastal areas and Southwest Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast.

For the next 48 hours, the maximum temperature in Tamil Nadu especially over the coastal and interior districts is likely to surge at least by two – four degree Celsius due to the cyclonic circulation over coastal Tamil Nadu and neighborhood now lies off Tamil Nadu coast at 1.5 km above mean sea level. “A few areas in Chennai and its suburbs are expected to receive mild showers along with thunderstorm activity during the evening hours for two days. The temperature level would record around 36 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations,” said the RMC official.

As several districts of Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rain in the last 24 hours, the highest rainfall was recorded in Cuddalore 16 cm. TN to set up Anti-Terrorism Squad at cost of Rs 57.51 crore

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Home Department is in the process of constituting an Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in the state and an amount of Rs 57.51 crore has been earmarked for it.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had announced that an ATS would be constituted in Tamil Nadu immediately after the October 2022 car blast in which a person was charred to death.

The killed man, Jameesha Mubin, 28, was a lone wolf and had planned a major terror attack on Deepavali eve in Coimbatore but his lack of knowledge in handling explosives led to the blast taking place before the designated time, causing minimal damage.

The Tamil Nadu Home Department is sourcing personnel for the force from the state police force and efficient officers who are interested to work in ATS have been short-listed. The department is also focusing on districts and cities from where terror activities were reported and would also take into account the inputs of the state and central intelligence departments. Sources in the police told IANS that Madurai, Coimbatore, and Chennai will be given importance in setting up the ATS units.

The ATS will be constituted on the lines of Thunderbolt force in Kerala, OCTOPUS (Organisation for Counter Terrorism Operations) in Andhra Pradesh, and other similar ATS organisations. The Tamil Nadu Home Department will also take a cue from the National Security Guard (NSG) before constituting the ATS.

Inputs from the functioning of ATS in the northeastern states and also North Indian states would be taken into account before the constitution of the ATS in Tamil Nadu.

ZSI team discovers 2 new spider species in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu

KOLKATA: Researchers of Zoological Survey of India have discovered two new species of jumping spiders from southern India, a statement issued by the surveyor said on Monday.

The two discoveries include ‘Phintelladhritiae’ from Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka and ‘Phintellaplatnicki’ from Salem district of Tamil Nadu. ‘Phintelladhritiae’ has been named in honour of Dr Dhriti Banerjee, the first woman director of the ZSI, the statement said.

Banerjee had taken over as the director of the more-than-100-year-old institution in August 2021. ‘Phintellaplatnicki’ has also been named in honour of late Dr Norman Platnick for his contribution to the field of arachnology, it said.

Arachnology is the scientific study of arachnids, which comprise spiders and related invertebrates such as scorpions and pseudoscorpions. The newly described species, which belong to the genus Phintella, are small-to-medium sized, colourful spiders, usually covered with metallic iridescent scales, the statement said.

The head is somewhat rounded or oval, relatively high with a distinct posterior slope, while the abdomen is ovoid or elongate, usually with pale and dark horizontal bands.

Members of this genus generally inhabit under leaves and barks of shrubs and grasses, the ZSI statement said. Before the discovery of these new species of jumping spiders, 12 species of Phintella were known to be valid from India.

The explorer team comprised Souvik Sen and Sudhin P P, from ZSI, Kolkata and John T D Caleb from Chennai. The discovery of these new species came up in the March 2023 issue of ‘Arthropoda Selecta’, a prestigious journal. Earlier this year, the team described another two new jumping spiders – ‘Stenaelurillusmegamalai’ and ‘Stenaelurillusneyyar’ – from the Western Ghats region.
