    CHENNAI: Finance Minister Palanivel Thiyaga Rajan met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Monday at the CM’s Alwarpet residence in Chennai, according to a Daily Thanthi report.

    As the State Cabinet meeting will be held tomorrow evening, it is allegedly reported that the meeting was a casual one.

    PTR is meeting the Chief Minister after State BJP president K Annamalai released another audio clip, allegedly attributing it to the State Finance Minister.

    A day after a leaked audio clip titled ‘DMK Files’ was released, PTR on April 26 took to Twitter to post a video to clarify that the audio was fabricated using Deepfake and called BJP’s attempt as cheap tactics to disrupt the good work of the Dravidian government.

    CHENNAI: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) on Sunday issued yellow alert for 17 districts of Tamil Nadu predicting heavy rain for the next 48 hours due to cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Arabian Sea & adjoining Lakshadweep area and wind discontinuity over the north interior Tamil Nadu.

    In addition, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea due to strong wind in the sea.

    As the wind discontinuity runs from east Vidarbha to north interior Tamil Nadu across Telangana and interior Karnataka at 1.5 km above mean sea-level.

    The cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep area now lies over Maldives area at 0.9 km above mean sea level.

    “At least 17 districts – Salem, Dharmapuri, the Nilgiris, Erode, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Namakkal, Karur, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Kallakurichi, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Perambalur and Tiruchy are likely to get heavy rain along with thunderstorm activity for the next two days. Also, heavy to very heavy rain is predicted at isolated places over Ranipet Vellore, Tirupattur, and Tiruvannamalai districts,” said a senior RMC official.

    The rest of the districts are expected to get light to moderate showers for the next few days. And the maximum temperature is likely to reduce during the evening time.

    “Additionally, squally weather with wind speed reaching 40 kmph to 45 kmph gusting to 55 kmph is likely to prevail over Southwest Bay of Bengal along and off Tamil Nadu coast from Cuddalore to Ramanathapuram and adjoining Sri Lanka coast. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the above-mentioned area for 24 hours,” said a senior RMC official.

    Several districts of Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rain in the last 24 hours, of which Madurai received 11 cm. Tirunelveli 9 cm, Coimbatore 8 cm, Nilgiris, Ranipet, Thoothukudi, and Pudukottai recorded 7 cm rainfall each, according to the data by RMC.

    CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu received 28 per cent more rainfall that is normal to above normal during the summer season between March 1 and April 28. The intense rain is likely to continue in the State especially over the Western Ghats and southern parts of Tamil Nadu for a week.

    Tamil Nadu recorded 73.6 mm of rainfall against the normal rainfall of 57.5 mm from last month. Of which, Coimbatore received the highest amount of rainfall with 187.8 mm, followed by Tenkasi 167 mm, and Dindigul 160 mm, as per the meteorological center data.

    A cyclonic circulation lies over the southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining Lakshadweep area and extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level. The trough now runs from the cyclonic circulation over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area to south Chhattisgarh across northern parts of Karnataka and Telangana and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.

    “Several districts of Tamil Nadu – the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tirupattur, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Salem, Vellore, Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Karur and Madurai are likely to receive heavy rain along with thunderstorm activity. On May 1 and 2, a few districts in Western Ghats and north interior districts are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rain. Later, there would be a break from rain and dry weather to prevail over the state,” P Senthamarai Kannan, Scientist E, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

    The official predicted light to moderate rain for Chennai and its suburbs during the afternoon or evening hours for the next two days. There are fewer chances for intense rain in the city in the first week of May month. In addition, the maximum and minimum temperature is likely to reduce and record average level in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations.

    Tamil Nadu weatherman Pradeep John stated, “Rains will become more widespread and heavy from April 29 to May 4. The temperature is likely to remain around normal or below normal till the end of May first week.”

    According to RMC, in the last 24 hours, the Nilgiris recorded 8 cm rainfall, Kanniyakumari 6 cm, Dindigul, and Virudhunagar received 5 cm rainfall each, Namakkal, Theni, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram recorded 2 cm of rainfall each.

    Anna flyover to get a makeover at Rs 8.45 crore

    CHENNAI: Works to strengthen and beautify the Anna flyover has been going on in a full swing by the Highways Department at a cost of Rs 8.45 crore.

    Currently, all 97 pillars of the flyover are being reinforced with modern ready-made concrete, following which the flyover will be painted and beautification works will be carried out.

    Reinforced concrete on the pillars, plantations below the flyover, new coat of paint and extra lighting are part of the works being carried out. It is also said that a pathway for the public to walk will be constructed.

    Also known as Gemini Flyover, it is a dual-armed grade separator, built in 1973 by East Coast Construction and Industries in 21 months.

    Considered as one of the top-rated flyovers in the country, it is Asia’s first-grade separator and the first flyover in Chennai.

    The presence of the Gemini Studios, which was demolished later, resulted in the flyover coming to be known as Gemini Flyover and the area being referred to as the Gemini Circle.

    April 28 and 29: Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning at one or two places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal

    April 30: Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Theni, Dindigul, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts will receive hail at one or two places.

    May 1: Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in most places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Theni, Dindigul, Namakkal, Karur, Tirupattur, Tiruppur, and Salem districts received heavy rainfall at one or two places.

    Chennai and its suburbs will remain partly cloudy for the next 48 hours. Light or moderate rain with thundershowers in a couple of places over the city The maximum temperature will be around 36–37 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature will be around 27–28 degrees Celsius.

    7 injured in accident involving MTC bus on ICF Road

    CHENNAI: A MTC bus was involved in an accident on ICF Road, injuring seven persons, on Wednesday.

    According to a Thanthi TV report, as an auto came across the MTC bus plying on the Chennai ICF road, the bus driver, who tried to avoid the accident, lost control and crashed on a wall.

    Around seven passengers in the bus were injured. All the injured have been admitted to the Kilpauk Government Hospital and are undergoing treatment

    MADURAI: Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district administration announced a holiday for the district on May 5, in view of Lord Kallazhagar’s entry into the Vaigai river as part of the Chithirai festival.

    The celebrations of the world-renowned Chithirai festival of Madurai started with flag hoisting on April 23. The festival’s main event is Kallazhagar’s entry into the Vaigai waters, which will be held on May 5.

    In view of this, the district administration has announced a holiday for the district on May 5, informed the temple authorities.

    As part of the Kallazhagar’s entry, the devotees reverently will perform ‘Theerthavari,’ by splashing the sacred yellow water on the Azhagar as a mark of the fulfilment of their vows.

    Balaji, Madurai Alagar temple chief priest said, “Every year lord Alagar visits Ramaraya Mandapam. Then the Theerthavari program will begin. Devotees fast for a month and participate in the Theerthavari program. Thousands of devotees participate in the program where they would splash water on lord Alagar.”

    “Usually Devotees fast for a month and participate in the Theerthavari program. Devotees carry a bag with water on their shoulders and splash the water on lord Alagar during Theerthavari”, he added.

    The priest further said that earlier devotees used a manual pump but nowadays they started using a pressure pump.

    “With the use of the pressure pump, the golden idol of Alagar and his golden horse are incurring damages. Therefore, I request devotees not to use pressure pumps during the Theerthavari program”, he said.

    Meanwhile, Madurai Alagar temple management is preparing a gold-plated horse idol, revered as the ‘Vahana’ of Lord Kallazhagar ahead Chithirai festival.

    Nagercoil Court grants conditional bail to Benedict Anto

    CHENNAI: Nagercoil District Magistrate Court granted conditional bail to Benedict Anto (29), a church priest in prison accused of sexual harassment, on Tuesday.

    He was arrested by a special team of Kanniyakumari police after obscene videos and pictures of him with some women went viral on social media.

    Benedict, a resident of Fathima Nagar in Vilavancode in the district, preached sermons in churches in Kanniyakumari district. An 18–year-old nursing student from Pechiparai lodged a complaint with district cyber crime branch seeking action against the priest.

    The victim was allegedly subjected to sexual abuse and received threats on social media. Based on the victim’s complaint, police registered a case against the church priest Benedict under five different sections Four other women have also lodged complaints against the priest, sources said.

    5 tonnes of artificially ripened mangoes seized at Koyambedu market

    CHENNAI: As the mango season has started and the sale of the seasonal fruit is heating up at the Koyambedu market, the State Food Safety Department (FSD) on Monday received continuous complaints that fruit shops in the city market were selling artificially ripened mangoes and bananas.

    Under the leadership of Chennai District Food Safety Department Officer Dr Satish Kumar, officers Sundaramurthy, Ramaraj, Elumalai, and other 10 people, including store management team staff, conducted an active search at the market from 4 am today.

    The search was conducted in more than 50 stores. The authorities discovered that 30 shops have artificially ripened mangoes and bananas with toxic chemicals and seized about 5 tonnes of artificially ripened mangoes and 2 tonnes of artificially ripened bananas.

    Food Safety Department Officer Satish Kumar said, “Some traders are selling artificially ripened mangoes using toxic chemicals. Adequate action will be taken against traders who continue to violate the rules. Such fruits are harmful to health. Food Safety Department (FSD) will create awareness among traders of the Koyambedu market about how to naturally ripen mangoes.”
