    Another arrest made in Thoothukudi VAO murder

    CHENNAI: Making another breakthrough in the Thoothukudi VAO Lourdu Francis’ murder case, the cops have arrested another accused – Marimuthu. He was nabbed at Tirunelveli’s Thazhayuth, where he was absconding.

    In an unfortunate incident, Village Administrative Officer of Thoothukudi’s Murappanadu, Lourdu Francis (55) was hacked to death by the mafia involved in illicit sand mining on Tuesday. The sand mafia saw Francis as a hindrance due to his crackdown on illegal mining.

    Immediately after the crime, one of accused – Ramasubramaniam was arrested. The special squad nabbed Marimuthu based on Ramasubramaniam’s statements.

    Following Lourdu’s death, Chief Minister Stalin announced a solarium of Rs 1 crore to his kin.

    VAO hacked to death inside office in Thoothukudi, probe on

    CHENNAI: A 56-year old Village Administrative Officer (VAO) who came under murderous attack at his office in Murappanadu in Thoothukudi district died without responding to treatment on Tuesday. The victim was identified as Lourde.

    Two unidentified assailants entered his office at around noon and hacked him indiscriminately and fled the scene. The victim with multiple cut injuries on his body was rushed to a Government Hospital, where he died. Thoothukudi SP L. Balaji Saravanan inspected the spot and held enquiries. The motive behind the incident is yet to be known. Murappanadu police have filed a case. Special teams formed to nab the culprits, sources said.

    Preliminary enquiries revealed that the VAO acted tough against illegal sand miners, sources said.
