    Drugs worth Rs 12 crore seized, three arrested

    Guwahati (IANS). Police in Assam’s Kamrup district arrested three drug peddlers and recovered drugs worth at least Rs 12 crore from them. Officials gave this information on Sunday.

    According to a senior police officer, Kamrup district police launched an operation on Saturday night based on specific information and recovered 700 grams of heroin from a vehicle.

    The police have arrested three people on charges of drug smuggling.

    The arrested drug peddlers have been identified as Abdul Hai, Mohidul Islam and Rafiqul Islam.

    According to the police, these three people were driving a drug-laden vehicle from Guwahati to Dhubri.

    When the police squad stopped the car in Palashbari area of the district, they found 50 soap boxes inside, each containing 10 packets of heroin weighing 700 grams.

    The police officer said that the estimated market value of the seized drugs would be around Rs 12 crore.

    Further investigation of the matter is on.

    Mysore (IANS) : Three people, including a minor, have been arrested for allegedly killing two elderly people. Police said the crime was committed for Rs 485.

    Police said that all three committed the crime to raise money for drugs. After the double murder, the accused had extorted Rs 485 from the deceased. Hunsur police arrested all three and sent two of them to judicial custody. Whereas, the minor was sent to the remand home.

    Both the adult accused have been identified as Abhishek and Tauseef Ahmed Khan. Police said the deceased have been identified as 70-year-old watchman Venkatesh and his friend Shanmug. The three accused killed both of them.

    Police told that Tausif was addicted to drugs and was also a drug smuggler. He was close to the other two accused and killed the two men working in the wood factory. After this, the accused took away Rs 485 from him. Shanmuga was mentally challenged and was living with Venkatesh.

    The accused attacked them with an iron rod and killed them both. The police got clues from the CCTV footage and arrested the accused. Police said the accused confessed that they killed the two elderly people for some money.

    With the arrest of three persons, the Islamabad police have busted a gang of vehicle lifters and recovered 11 vehicles, including two scooters and nine bikes from their possession. Those arrested were identified as Tarsem Singh of Hargobind Nagar, Kot Khalsa, Vishal Singh of Kot Khalsa and Raghu Sharma of the Putlighar area. Islamabad police station SHO Mohit Kumar said that during patrolling in the Kot Khalsa area, the police got a tip-off that the accused were involved in stealing of bikes and scooters. He said Raghu was a drug addict while Tarsem had three criminal cases against him. Vishal, a scrap dealer, also has a case registered against him. He said the accused were produced in the court and brought on two-day police remand for further investigations. He told that as per preliminary probe, the accused used to steal the vehicles from crowded areas in different parts of the city. He said all the vehicles were without number plates and therefore the police were trying to find the ownership of the vehicles through engine and chassis numbers.

    NCB busts international drug cartel in Goa, Russian Olympic-medal-winning swimmer arrested

    The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted an international drug cartel in Goa and arrested two Russians – a 1980 Olympic silver medal-winning woman swimmer and a former policeman – along with an Indian, besides seizing different drugs, an official said on Saturday.

    The operation was conducted by the NCB’s Goa unit over the past two weeks, he said.

    “Based on a tip-off that a Russian drug cartel was actively operating in Arambol and its adjoining areas in Goa, a probe was launched. As per the intelligence inputs, a Russian woman named S Varganova was found involved in the supply of drugs to foreign nationals. During the investigation, we also received information that led to the identification of a local man named Akash,” the NCB official said.

    “During further probe, it was learnt that Akash was part of a larger network and he was working on the directions of a Russian person, who acted as the kingpin of the cartel,” he said.

    Immediately after that, Akash was put under discreet surveillance. After extensive intelligence-based operations, a Russian national named Andre was apprehended and 20 LSD blots were seized from him. During his spot interrogation, he revealed that he was growing hydroponic weed at his local residence, the anti-drug agency said.

    During the entire operation, different kinds of drugs, including 88 LSD blots, 8.8 grams cocaine, 242.5 grams charas, 1.440 kg hydroponic weed, 16.49 grams hash oil, 410 grams hash cake – were seized along with Rs 4.88 lakh cash, he said, adding that the NCB also recovered Indian and foreign currencies, fake documents, IDs and material required to grow hydroponic weed.

    “The arrested Russian woman, S Varganova, is a 1980 Olympic silver medallist in swimming, while Andre is a former policeman from Russia. The latter has been operating a drug cartel in Goa since a long time. He had visited many cities to spread his network and had been managing the well spread network of street peddlers,” the NCB said.

    Thereafter, tree pots of hydroponic weed plants were recovered from his house, the official said.

    Bhubaneswar (IANS) | The Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) of the Odisha Police on Thursday arrested three accused, including two former bank employees, in a Rs 4.13 crore bank fraud case. According to the police, the police team arrested Abdul Hayee, retired branch manager of Nuapatna branch, Prakash Kumar Mohapatra, former senior assistant of Christ College Extension counter, Urban Cooperative Bank Ltd, Cuttack and Mustakim Raza, former LIC agent.

    The arrest was made in a case lodged by Priyavrat Panda, Chief Executive Officer of Urban Cooperative Bank Limited.

    As per the complaint, during the period 2019-21, Abdul Hayee and Prakash Kumar, working in connivance with three borrowers, had sanctioned eight loans amounting to Rs 3.82 crore against bogus LIC policies, which has now increased to Rs 4.13 crore .

    During investigation, the EOW found that the accused bank officials did not verify the genuineness of the insurance policies pledged knowingly in violation of banking guidelines, nor did they verify the same with the concerned branch of LIC. In addition, he renewed loans by sanctioning new loans to pay off previous loans.

    Mustakim Raza was working as LIC agent from 2002 to 2022 and forged LIC policies by naming borrowers including himself.

    Raza, in connivance with the accused bank officials, managed to obtain loans against forged insurance policies. Officials said that the arrested bank officials were fully aware of such forgery.

    Three arrested with 3.6 kg opium

    Three persons have been arrested by the city police in two separate incidents of alleged drug peddling. The police claimed to have seized a total of 3.6 kg of opium from their possession.

    In the first incident, Mangal Bhoomij, a resident of Jharkhand, was arrested from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar. ASI Balwir Singh said the police were patrolling in Block D of SBS Nagar when the suspect, on seeing the police party, attempted to flee. He claimed the police seized 1 kg of opium from his possession. A case under Section 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against him at the Dugri police station.

    In the second case, Vishal Kumar Kesari and Shyam Kumar Kesari, both of Gaya district in Bihar, have been arrested from Thareeke village. ASI Rajinder Pal claimed the police claimed to have seized 2.6 kg of opium from them. A case under Sections 18C, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered against the duo at the Sadar police station.

    The Counter Intelligence (CI) wing arrested three smugglers with 4-kg heroin in Lopoke area near the India-Pakistan border here on Tuesday. Those arrested have been identified as Gurdev Singh, a resident of Kakkar village, Gurlal Singh, a resident of Bachiwind, and Jatinder Singh, a resident of Mode.

    According to information, the Counter Intelligence (CI) got a tip-off about the arrival of the contraband from across the border. The police had information that these smugglers had collected the heroin sent from across the border (Pakistan). To nab the smugglers, the Counter Intelligence wing of the police set up a special naka in Lopoke area.

    Meanwhile, smugglers Gurdev Singh, Gurlal Singh, and Jatinder Singh, who were riding a motorcycle, were intercepted. During investigation, the contraband was recovered from them. The police claimed that the estimated value of the seized heroin was around Rs 28 crore in the international market.

    CI officials suspect that the accused had links with Pakistani smugglers. This consignment was brought from Pakistan and the smugglers picked it up from the border for further delivery. The police produced the accused in a court that sent them to police custody.

    A joint team of the Chief Minister’s flying squad and the Health Department raided an illegal hospital at Bajghera village and arrested three operators. An FIR was registered at the Bajghera police station.

    With no qualified doctor onboard, the hospital included 13 beds, a general ward, private room, lab, testing equipment, ICU bed, labour room, emergency room and an operation theatre. According to Inderjeet Yadav, DSP, CM’s flying squad, the establishment was being run under the name of Anand Hospital.

    Investigations revealed that four partners were running this hospital. One of them was even found treating patients for an OPD fee of Rs 600 even as he did not have any valid medical degree.

    “We found that Rambir, a resident of Bhind in Madhya Pradesh, was treating patients. When he was asked for his medical degree and documents related to the hospital, he could not produce any. Besides him, the names NK Sharma, Deepak Rai, Kavita, Mantu and Yogesh were found mentioned as doctors in the OPD register. There was no MoU signed with any doctor,” he said.

    The DSP said Rambir posed himself as the director of the hospital and had three other partners, who had been identified as Vikas Bhardwaj of Sitapur in UP, Nandkishore of Kapashera in Delhi and Mantu Kumar Pandey of Hazaribagh in Jharkhand.

    Delhi Police busts Indore’s interstate gang, three arrested

    New Delhi (IANS) | The Delhi Police on Thursday claimed to have busted the Indore-based ‘Tala Chabi’ Sikligar inter-state gang operating in the national capital. With this, the police have arrested three people. The accused have been identified as Joginder Singh, a resident of Indore in Madhya Pradesh and Kartar Singh of Parbhani district in Maharashtra. He often used to travel from Madhya Pradesh to Delhi. The accused used to stay in hotels near Old and New Delhi railway stations before committing the house burglaries.

    As per reports, the police have also arrested Abhinay Soni from Barwani in Madhya Pradesh. Soni used to buy stolen jewellery. According to the police, based on the complaint, an FIR was registered on February 18.

    In which the complainant alleged that jewelry and two lakh rupees in cash were stolen from his house. He had gone to Haryana to attend a marriage function when the house was burgled.

    During the investigation, the police team started searching for the criminals on the basis of CCTV footage. The footage revealed that the accused changed vehicles twice, evaded through narrow lanes and adopted confusing tactics of swerving into different lanes to dodge.

    The gang eventually abandoned the stolen vehicle, and used several modes of public transportation before making their way back to their hotel.

    Shahdara’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Rohit Meena said that the police team mapped the spot and the routes of movement of the accused. Over 500 CCTV footage recordings were analyzed within a radius of 15 km.

    With the help of CCTV footage, the team traced the thieves to their place of residence in Old Delhi. This place was 15 km away from the incident site. Subsequently, with the help of human and technical intelligence, Joginder and Kartar were identified and apprehended. On interrogation, Joginder disclosed that he operates an Indore-based ‘Tala Chaabi Sikligar’ gang and commits interstate thefts.

    Joginder told police that they came to Delhi from Madhya Pradesh and stayed in budget hotels near Old and New Delhi railway stations. During the day they used to roam the streets of various colonies in Delhi as locksmiths, and when someone called them for lock repair, they used to break into the said house.

    The officer said that to commit the thefts, they used to steal bikes and then use them. Apart from this, on the information of the accused, the police also arrested Abhinay, who was the receiver of the stolen jewellery. So, around 100 grams of gold, tools for repairs, duplicate keys have been recovered, the official said.

    Gang of women pickpockets active in Delhi Metro busted, three arrested

    New Delhi (IANS) | Police on Thursday busted a gang of three women who were involved in pickpocketing in the Delhi Metro. The accused have been identified as Gayathri (26), Anita (40) and Savita (35). All three are residents of Faridpuri in Anand Parbat area of central Delhi.

    Police said that 60-year-old P. Jaya Bhagya Lakshmi, a resident of Bengaluru, lodged a complaint on April 1 that someone stole her purse in the metro running between Karol Bagh to Rajeev Chowk. The purse contained gold ornaments and house keys.

    During the investigation, CCTV footage from Karol Bagh to Rajiv Chowk metro station was thoroughly examined, said Jitendra Mani, Deputy Commissioner of Metro Police. CCTV footage installed inside the train was also scanned. On analysis, the movements of three female passengers were found suspicious.

    The team immediately swung into action and the three were nabbed within 24 hours, he said.

    During interrogation, the accused women accepted their crime. A stolen purse was also recovered from his house which had gold chain, ring and gold studs and key of the victim’s house.

    The Deputy Commissioner of Police said that this gang used to wash their hands in metro trains, crowded buses and trains.

    They used to surround the one who was to be hunted, he said. Then by diverting his attention, she used to steal valuables. The stolen goods were distributed among all. This is how he used to live.
